Pokémon Scarlet brings a fresh open-world experience to the series, and exploring Paldea with full freedom is a blast. The new Pokémon designs are creative, and the story has some surprisingly heartfelt moments. The ability to tackle gyms in any order is a nice change of pace. That said, the game could definitely use some performance optimization—occasional frame drops and pop-in are noticeable, especially in busy areas. Still, if you’re a Pokémon fan, the sense of adventure and discovery makes it worth playing.

As someone who's been a Pokemon fan since the original games and who hasn't missed a generation, reviewing the Switch mainline Pokemon games is...odd, for different reasons. For Sword and Shield, the biggest problem in my opinion was that as the first $60 Pokemon games they felt insubstantial and not worth the price point, until the DLC came out...at an extra charge. Scarlet/Violet doesn't have that issue, as from launch there's plenty of content to sink your teeth into. As the first open world mainline Pokemon game, you have plenty of interesting locations to explore, challenges to face, and critters to catch. The locations actually even look pretty nice on an aesthetic level...when you aren't dealing with framerate drops or performance issues.
The glitches and performance issues are the most obvious drawback of these games, and as of mid December 2022 many are still unpatched. My understanding is that the worst of the glitches occur in multiplayer mode, so as someone who tends to stick to singleplayer anyway my gameplay wasn't too impacted, though I've still had my fair share of issues. Not bad enough to be a dealbreaker for me, but enough to be a huge caveat while recommending the game to others.
My other biggest gripe with the game is that in the shift to an open world setting it feels like the game offers too little guidance to players. The map is hard to interpret on a first playthrough and does a poor job of distinguishing between which areas are accessible to players at this point of the game and where the cliffs are too high to be navigable. Areas that are the appropriate level are scattered throughout the map instead of being adjacent to each other, and the lack of level scaling means you can easily end up accidentally skipping over low level gyms/titans/bases and have to come back at a point where you're overleveled to a point where there's no challenge. It feels as though Game Freak still needs to find a median point between railroading linearity and dropping you blind into an unintuitive layout with little direction or guidance.
The most frustrating thing about these games is that if you're able to look past these problems there's genuine potential for them to be among the best in the series. There's a sense of adventure to them that has always been implicit to the franchise but has never really felt so vivid. The characters are great, and the story is surprisingly good for a Pokemon game, as little as that means coming from a franchise that isn't exactly known for its storytelling prowess.
After over 20 years of Pokemon games, I tend to appreciate when the games try to experiment with new things and step out of the comfort zone of its tried and true but perhaps a bit overdone formula. And this game is no exception, but I wish it had been given maybe another year of development first.

The good:
- Much better gaming experience than BDSP.
- The story is immersive and the gameplay mechanics make it a very fun game.
- Best open world concept that Pokémon has put out this far.
- Shiny Hunting is much more enjoyable than previous games.
The bad:
- Feels unfinished and the frame rate is terrible at times
- While open world is great, the experience lacked inside of the buildings you actually went in.
- Online trade system is slow and pretty awful to use.
- Still no easy way to organize pokemon inside of boxes.

Now I know people talk bad about some of the performance issues that they've faced, but from my experience, there's no major game-breaking performance issue. There are frame rate issues in some areas and occasionally things will load in a funny way, but if I'm being honest, they augment the experience that is probably the best Pokemon game that's been made in a long time because of their comedic nature. Highly recommend getting it now before they even consider a patch for the performance issues

I have been playing pokemon since pomemon blue on the gameboy color. I have nit played every generation, but i finally decided to play this one and ive gotta day, ive really been enjoying it! I like that there is more than just the gyms to focus on with team star bases and the titans. I also really love just going around and seeing the pokemon in the wild. I recommend it! I did have some pretty bad framerate issues on the Switch 1, but i moved it over to the Switch 2 and this game runs incredibly smooth and the differnece was night and day!

Despite its flaws and rocky release, if you’re a Pokémon fan it’s a lot of fun and Shiny Hunting is so addictive in the Paldea region! One of the most engaging stories in the series and I def recommend! A great entry point for people curious about Pokémon too! 8/10 for me.

The game was great. The story was interesting enough to keep me interested until the end. Catching and exp share was really great. The characters were fun and the open world exploring was fantastic. The only reason i gave it 4 instead of 5 stars was performance. Anything more than 10 ft from your character dropped to 1 fps. Couple of other glitches and crashes, but if they fixed those it would be 5/5

This is yet another fun Pokemon game. I like the free roaming-ish aspect of it and how you can be as slow as you want with the story.
