Easy Way to Change Receiver to WiFi

I was looking for a way to change my older Denon Receiver to WiFi. Option 1 was purchase Sonos. Option 2 was to buy a new receiver with WiFi. The salesperson at Best Buy suggested Polk for 2 major reasons. One is that you are not limited to purchasing only Sonos speakers if you go Sonos. Secondly it's much cheaper. After describing my Denon Receiver, the salesperson said that I should keep the Denon since it was cost a lot of money to replace with WiFi. The set up was extremely easy. I have an Apple Airport Extreme WiFi and it accepted connection very easily. I downloaded the Polk App on my iPhone and iPad which is very easy to use. Two downsides which does not need a reduction in rating. One is that it's easier to view your connections with an iPad than an iPhone. A larger screen allows you to see all of your group connections. You have to collapse some viewing trees with your iPhone. The other issue has nothing to do with Polk. I purchased a Definitive Technology speaker and found out that Definitive cannot connect to Airport Extreme. I was not about to change my router or house set up in order to accommodate. I highly recommend the Polk as an easy way to change your Receiver to WiFi, and allows you a lot of options for adding on WiFi speakers.

New format music is awesome unless you can't play it on your audio equipment. This Polk device allow you to use older style inputs (RCA, optical, etc.) to play streaming music into your audio system. Everything from Pandora, Amazon, and your playlist off iPhone. Simple WiFi app and you are set!

The Polk system seems like an older version of Sonos but is more cost effective. App was had trouble connecting to the system but it worked eventually.

This was a great addition to my Polk WIFi speaker system. Now I can stream any music source from my PC, my NAS or from on-line services to my AV receiver as well as my Polk Play-fi speakers.

I know about Sonus and a few other other "integrated" wireless audio solutions and I gotta tell ya, forget about them. I have two of these at this point because...I can listen to one stereo on a set of speakers in another stereo on the other side of the house. The thing is, there is no propriety stuff here. You get the Polk Omni app on your phone or tablet or laptop or even a desktop and everything integrates without any weird stuff or propriety gotchas. I play my turntable on the home theater. The turntable is in my home office and it pushes the output from the turntable to the other P1 on the home theater and I get to listen to Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" on vinyl with all my friend in the comfort of my living room instead of sitting on the floor in the office. Or, I can pipe the ball game through the sound bar, the S2 speakers or whatever the A1 amp is hooked up to. It's such a simple idea that seems to be so complex but this is a tremendous solution that is so easy to use, your grandmother can set it up. It's worth every penny. In fact, you're probably stealing it at this price!

I have 3 playfi devices in my home and will add two more of the Polk Audio Omni P1, one for the office and one for the garage to complete my home music network. I've been using the Deftech W7 and W9 for quite some time prior to adding the P1 to my main system. I have had minimal connectivity issues, an occasional reboot like you would expect with any networking equipment (maybe 2x per month). My modem and my router also require occasional reboots, as do my computers, my phone and tablets, etc. A little common sense goes a long way with technology... I use the system extensively, every day. Some local music, mostly Pandora one and Tidal, and have tried Deezer and spotify. I did not like the way Spotify works but Pandora, Tidal and Deezer have been fantastic. I would say to anyone that is having an unusual amount of issues with the PlayFi system, make sure your devices have up to date firmware - just like any other networking equipment. I would also reboot your modem/router, then reboot your playfi devices. I have a Yamaha Aventage receiver, with built in Music cast. It works great sure, but very limited apps, and limited to only my main system. When I want whole house music, or to stream Tidal HiFi, I leverage my PlayFi network with great success. The nice thing about PlayFi, you're not stuck with one manufacturer (like receivers with built in network). Sonos is nice in that you can buy Sonos connect to plug in to any system, but I wanted some standalone speakers as well, and the only choice with a Sonos system is to buy Sonos speakers. I don't care to be stuck with one brand. My Definitive Technology W7 and W9 sound fantastic. I also have the freedom to buy other standalone speaker brands with PlayFi should I choose. PlayFi is a growing technology with more and more apps and manufacturers joining in. Sonos is a great system, but if you want a more open and free to choose path, I recommend PlayFi. PlayFi is not perfect, but in my experience it has been reliable and provides excellent performance. The Polk Audio Omni P1 is a great addition to my collection. If you're having sound quality issues, it's not the P1 or PlayFi. Both are capable of exceeding CD quality.

    Get a chromecast audio instead!

There was a time when i had a non networked receiver. I purchased this product for that very reason. I now have a networked marantz and am much happier. The software that this product uses is DTS playfi, and it is terrible. There is very limited support with apps so you better be ok with just using Pandora all the time. Also all of the polk omni products I have owned constantly remove themselves from the wifi network. I am at a point now that none of my speakers will reconnect to my network after hours and hours of trying. And no, there is no issue with my network. I have a nighthawk router and have a marantz receiver and chromecast audio that do wifi just fine, not to mention streaming from my smart tv. So I am left with hundreds of dollars of useless audio, and hours of wasted time. So frustrating. And be warned. Do yourself a favor and get a networked receiver or just spring for the sonos connect. Heck, even the chromecast audio is a much, much, much better product that does everything this product does and more. It has support for more apps and is less buggy too. Oh and its also 35 bucks.
