A fun and fresh game oozing with personality

Sunset Overdrive is an interesting and creative game from the developer of the Ratchet and Clank series of games, Insomniac. It is an open world game with a futuristic neon punk vibe. The game takes place in a bright and colorful setting, which is a refreshing change from the trend toward dark and serious games. The gameplay consists of using an ever-growing arsenal of primarily ranged weapons to shoot enemies while continuously executing Tony Hawk-like moves, using the environment to grind on wires, rails, and fences or bounce on things like cars, umbrellas, and awnings. The goal of constantly grinding and bouncing between objects while fighting and traversing the world takes some getting used to and can get tiresome at times, but overall it's a fresh take that becomes more enjoyable as you get more comfortable. The story and characters are interesting and well-done. Like most open world games there are a ton of side activities and collectibles available. Overall, this is a strong game in the Xbox One lineup and is worthy of your hard-earned dollars.

Sunset Overdrive doesn't take itself seriously, and that's OK. Grinding rails and using the unique weapons that Insomiac games is known for is a blast. The world is vibrant and ready to explore. Like any open world game, some side missions can repetitive; however, when the gameplay is this varied, you will be having too much fun to notice.
Sunset Overdrive is a blend of Rachet, Crackdown, and Jet Grind that stands out in the current gaming landscape. It's also fun.

I got an Xbox one because I liked what it did and what it stood for. However, at the time of purchase the game selection was pretty poor. I decided to pick this game up due to decent reviews. I was blown away. It was EXACTLY what I wanted from a console game. Good graphics, supper funny, a fun plot line that you can easily commit 20 minutes to 3 hours on. Game of the year? Maybe not, but one of the more enjoyable experiences I've had in a while. 8.5/10

I had read some good reviews on this game, so I decide to purchase it. This game is a blast. Traversing the open sandbox style world is a lot more fun than most games due to the quick and agile maneuvers you can chain together. Doesn't take itself too seriously. May not be for younger kids.

I went in knowing I would like this, but never expected to view it as a system seller type game. As one of the first titles I played on the One, this game completely justified the purchase for me. The art is straight out of a Pixar or Disney 3d film, and the action is reminiscent of Tony Hawk and Jet Grind Radio coupled with the shooting mechanics of Ratchet and Clank. If any of that sounds intriguing you should buy this title immediatly.

My husband brought me this game for Christmas. This was the first game I played on my XBox One. I love it. The graphics are beautiful and the missions are fun. I love how you can customize your character without having to gain experience points. The grinding, flipping, and special weapons make the game even more fun to play. I also purchased this game for my brother, who only likes sports games, and he's further along in the game than I am.

Great humor. Exciting weapons, fun traversal techniques. The story is okay but great fun factor. One of the better open world games out today. Better than Watch Dogs and some GTA's because of the visuals and comedy approach to the game... I actually traded in Watch Dogs for this...

This game... there's nothing else quite like it. It's insane. Truly insane. But it's also great fun and very entertaining. If you enjoy quirky games and like the idea of traversing huge dayglow city landscapes while shooting hordes of crazed mutants with a variety of wacky weapons, then this game with make you smile. Controls may take a little getting used to, but once you do you'll have a blast.

I've played all the big games in 2014. This is the best. It's fun, sarcastic, exciting and very creative story line. This is a game that will appeal to Duke Nukem fans. The controls are demanding but the game leads you into them at a nice pace. This game is awesome.

The game makes a really good first impression. Usually I'm put off by strongly linear narrative intros, but this one is funny and a blast. Narration overall if pretty good and it has nice character customization options. The mechanics are pretty neat, and the controls just about flawless for what it does. Unfortunately, that ends up not being too much. Most missions end up feeling e exactly the same, and the ones that don't are fairly often a "defend this thing" type that is annoying. The easy to learn, hard to style of acrobatics and multiple weapon switching to handle the waves of enemies feels actually more akin to arcade shooters if the past, like Geometry Wars or something. This would have been great in arena challenges with high score scores and best times on a leaderboard or something, but I'm an open world format it just gets old. It ends feeling like a lot of empty running around to do the same thing again for the 100th time. Because the experience is so polished I'll give it 3 stars, but it had low ambition and creativity outside of the art and mechanics.

This is a game that knows it's a video game and uses that knowledge to great humorous effect. The art style is wacky and the characters are all a bit silly, but in a good way. It's super colorful and the gameplay is a ton of fun. It's like Tony Hawk mixed with inFamous mixed with the weapons from the Ratchet & Clank series, and then given a coat of neon paint. And those respawn animations! So fun!
