This review is for the Purple Rain [Deluxe Expanded Edition] [CD & DVD]. This is truly the only remastered version of Purple Rain to purchase. Three CD's of music, including the original album, B sides, extended versions, and rarities. Plus one concert DVD.

This digital remastered version of Purple Rain is a true masterpiece. The music on the vault CD is unbelievable and should've neen released years ago. Buy this masterpiece.

Hmm...this one is tricky I loved the original version but the extra disk along with the dvd of his concert blew me away. Prince always knew how to put on a show and purple rain will always be a favorite prince album of mines!

If you like Purple Rain and/or that era of Prince's music, you'll love this. This is a multi-disc set, starting with the full, remastered Purple Rain album from 1984. Let's talk about the new stuff: There are some 7" single versions of some songs that are already on the Purple Rain CD. In my opinion, there aren't enough differences in them to have justified including them, (particularly if anything else was possibly left out to make room for them); but they are enjoyable nonetheless. There are some other songs that have been previously available, though as B-sides and less widely distributed, (Erotic City, Another Lonely Christmas, etc.). It's nice to have them all in one place. "From the vault", there a few songs that, in my opinion, make it worth buying this set for them alone, let alone all the other great songs. "The Dance Electric", the long, "Hallway Speech" version of "Computer Blue", and "Father's Song", (which is a melody taken from "Computer Blue", slowed down and introduced by a very haunting piano), are excellent. I'm sad that I've lived without them theses 33 years since the 1984 release of "Purple Rain"! The final disc is a DVD. It's a full concert from March of 1985. It's okay. I've only watched it once so far. The video and sound quality aren't up to today's digital standards...but it's Prince and I'm glad to have it available to view. The only thing that could've made this more complete is if they included a DVD of the movie, too! Overall, an excellent collection. I'm glad to have some stuff from the vault, but I'd give it all back if we could still have Prince on the planet. Rest well, Prince. We miss U.

Purple Rain Deluxe Expanded Edition is the must own 3 CD/1 DVD collection that Prince fans have been waiting for years. In addition to the original music album soundtrack, you have unreleased tracks, singles and special mix tracks, and The out of print 1985 concert show that is now available in 1 DVD. I was a bit disappointed that the blu-ray is not included in this set. Purple Rain Deluxe Expanded Edition is now my favorite CD album and my favorite movie. Purple Rain is one of my favorite movies and albums. Purple Rain is fully remastered and included the concert film that was previously released on VHS.

This contains never before extended versions from Purple Rain music which I am happy to have as a Prince collector.

Although I have most of Prince's music, it still had a few songs I needed for my collection! Great Prince release!!!

Finally remastered and with great bonus tracks I never heard before. This is one of my favorites.

Bought the reissue of this album for the concert DVD. Amazing!!!

This album when released in 1984 began my lifetime appreciation of Prince and his music. Not much more can be said about the main disc of this 4-disc set, but the extras are well worth it. My VHS of the Syracuse concert is slowly fading away, so the concert disc alone is well worth it. The Single Edits/B-Sides disc is a nice addition, but one of the main selling points was the Vault material. I was surprised at the version of "Possessed" that was included, however most people would recognize it as it was played as an instrumental in the background during the film "Purple Rain". This disc also let me down just a little. "The Dance Electric" is missing the searing guitar portions as well as the voices of Wendy and Lisa (don't believe the liner notes because they have inaccuracies here and there). All-in-all, though, this is a must-have for Prince fans.

I always loved this album, and the second disc proves he *could* have given followed Purple Rain with a "Purple Rain 2" if he was so inclined, but that wasn't his style. The sounds found on the original are abundant on the extra tracks, its really a joy to hear more from such a great era. The DVD is about as good as the bootlegs going around, but I wonder if only so much can be done with video tape from 40 years ago. My ONLY real complaint is disc 3, which could have benefited from sequencing the disc so you wouldn't hear the same songs over and over going through their mixes. LIke, maybe hear the single edits first, then the remixes? Still, wonderful stuff.

I love prince and best buys had it before every one else

I have been listening to this album first on cassette then CD since the release of "When Doves Cry". I purchased this 3 CD set with bonus DVD and what I thought I was listening to was taken up to a brand new level. The remastering is perfect for the songs so that they take on a warmer feel and probably alot closer to the original sound from the studio. The bonus two CDs are full of great material. Prince was constantly creating and these extras show a deeper involvement with the whole "world" of Purple Rain. The extended versions for dance clubs, etc are OK but the real meat and potatoes of this set is the DVD live in concert. Prince and the Revolution show a masterful performance on stage that was probably the pinnacle of the live music coming from the group. HIGHLY recommend this purchase!

There is no shortage of music on this compilations. Four discs worth in fact. For Prince fans, the real treasure is the 3rd disc, which contains an album's worth of unreleased material. While Purple Rain is an iconic album, I'll assume any Prince fan already owns it, and the Disc 2 tracks were all released as B sides and collected on his Greatest Hits/B Sides collection from 1993, the 3rd disc is all new stuff, only available on bootleg before, and it's all up to his standards. The stuff he left out was better than what 99% of everyone else was releasing in the 80s Definitely recommended for any Prince fan.

The remastering is excellent, the second disc of music from the vault is revelatory, the third disc of b-sides and remixes, while not essential, is fun nonetheless. The concert DVD is priceless but be warned this was 1984 to don't be expecting 2017 technology. (Also, there was a fantastic live video of "Take Me With U" which came out when the song was released as a single. The concert from which that clip was taken is NOT the concert released in this package. It might've been nice to have both concerts, but I don't even know if that other concert was filmed in its entirety.)

Prince was known to have the highest quality in creating his music, and this new master blows the original release out of the water. Superb sound for the album. The previously unreleased stuff is great, especially the Computer Blue extended version, which I have to say is very interesting. Also having the single versions and B-sides are great. I finally have both versions of Erotic City because of this. I have yet to check out the DVD that accompanies the release. It would have been cool if they offered a blu-ray disc instead of DVD but I mean... it's Prince!

Even if, like me, you own or have at some point owned Purple Rain on vinyl, cassette and CD, this is an essential item. The vault material on disc 2 is mostly first-rate, with much better sound quality than all the bootlegs floating around. Disc 3 may be a little less impressive, but completists will be happy to have all the extra mixes. And the DVD release of 1985's "Live Around the World" concert is a real treat. Stop reading reviews and buy it!
