A fun new take on the puzzle genre

Puzzle & Dragon is a series that has existed in Japan for some time and it is great to see it finally come to North America. The basic idea of the game is similar to many other puzzle games: match at least three like colored orbs to clear them and make room for more. The orbs you clear cause the corresponding allies on your team to attack your foe in a sort of RPG-like turn based fighting system. Your allies are either various monsters or characters from the Mario Brothers universe, depending o which of the two versions you decide to play. Acquiring allies and building teams is probably what makes these games so strategic and fun. Personally I prefer the Puzzle and Dragon half of the game more than the Mario half, but it is all a matter of opinion. The fact is you get two awesome games for a very reasonable price.

I am originally a Puzzles & Dragons (PAD) gamer. And I religiously play on my mobile device. But after hearing about PAD's collaboration with Nintendo, I definitely wanted to give this a try.
While the original PAD does play slightly different in terms of the skill system and leveling up, Puzzle & Dragons Z + Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Editions lives up to the PAD game mechanics. It has been a bit more simplified for the demographic this game targets. It will offer countless hours of fun for your child. While there might be a learning curve, the addition of Super Mario characters definitely brings a different experience. For seasoned PAD gamers, it is worth a try.

Puzzle and Dragons is a fantastic match 3 puzzle RPG. If you enjoyed Puzzle Quest, this'll be a fantastic game for you.
In P&D, you're collecting a monster team, leveling them up and battling your way through dungeons. To attack, you match 3 icons of the same color, which makes your same colored monsters attack. The real fun is in creating combos, as you move around a icon to match, it moves around the other icons near it, so you can really get awesome combos going.
Tons of fun.

First of all, 30 dollars for two PAD games is a great deal. For fans of the mobile app, Puzzles+Dragons Z takes monsters you've grown familiar with and added animations and other tiny details that improve the experience. While the Mario half bounces back and forth from ridiculously easy to blisteringly difficult, the animations are solid and uses the traditional PAD gameplay. Highly suggest this game.

I was a big fan of the mobile game, but wasn't a real fan of the micro-transaction/freemium model. So when news came out that Nintendo would be teaming up with Gungho to bring PaD to the 3DS, I had a reason to start using it again.
There are two types of play in the game, Super Mario and PaD with an rpg twist. I started off playing the Mario version which was something a bit different from the mobile game I've played. It uses a game map like in Super Mario World back on the snes and you have the option to power up your characters in between stages.
After a while, it got a bit tough so I hopped over to the play the PaD version. I was surprised that the PaD mode was more like a rpg. You run around a city and as you exit, you battle through maps, collecting monsters. As in the Mario version, you can upgrade your monsters in between battles. You can also collect money to purchase more beasts through the gashapon feature just like in the mobile version.
I took a break from playing the game for a couple of weeks, but when I picked it back up, I found that I couldn't connect that many chains and it took me longer to plan out possible combos. Anywho, this game is worth it for those that are fans of the mobile series and own a 3DS, or (match 3) puzzle game fans!

First off, I purchased for my kids to play the Super Mario version. My 7y/o enjoys the game, but I can tell that further progression will involve me playing or time passing for my son's puzzle solving skills to develop. Easy enough for most of my family, but I think a $20 price point would spike sales for this niche puzzle game.

Really fun puzzle game and a different twist on the 3 match genre. You can slide one orb anywhere on the grid (up/down/left/right/diagonal) which moves the other orb where you have been. Try to get as many matches as you can and note that you don't have to slide right what's next to a match. The dragon side seems easier than the Mario side regardless of what it says.

Very nice Puzzle and Dragons games without micro-transactions. Z is the easier game, but has more content. The Mario game plays more like the iPad game, but has less monsters. The Mario game is the harder of the two and both are addictive and fun.

I've never played a puzzle and dragons game before and only really gave it a shot because a friend said the mario version was fun. It isn't like other puzzle games and is a game i've put way more hours into then i ever imagined i was going to. Blast to play, hard to put down.

Puzzle and Dragons is a great game to pick up and play at any time, and it scratches that simple puzzle itch quite well. The game starts out simple, but the difficulty ramps up quickly, so stay on top of your team composition. People familiar with Pokemon will enjoy collecting and evolving dragons. One of the most interesting things about this feature I find is that many dragons have branching evolution paths, adding another layer of customization for your party.
The story is simple and doesn't take itself all that seriously, and that works well enough with the tone that the game sets.
Overall, it's fun, easy, and addictive. Worth the purchase, in my opinion.
And don't forget there's also the Mario version of the game, which plays a little bit differently, and adds some interesting features as well.

Honestly, I was not expecting much - PvD was originally a mobile F2P game with heavy microtransactions. A friend recommended this so I gave it a go, and boy was I glad I did. This is one addictive game - great puzzle and adventure moments - the Mario version is the best!

Simple yet addictive. This game features two different ones in 1. Puzzle & Dragons Z is the original in the line, while the Super Mario edition is the spin off so to say.
The Super Mario edition focuses more on the puzzle part, and Z focuses a little more on RPG elements and story. I was quiet surprised by Z and how much more i enjoy it over SME personally since it better gives goals to look forward to, along with story.
Both games still have the same gameplay of matching 5+ in a row of the same colors to deal out attacks. Only differences is Zs more RPG like gameplay, and SME more focus on just the puzzle gameplay alone.

Disclaimer: I only played the Super Mario Bros portion of the game, so the Puzzle and Dragons portion probably could have saved the experience, but I won't know.
Basically, the game I played consisted of walking around a map, occasionally being subject to things I couldn't do. It felt arbitrary that certain things at the mushroom houses were held back from the player until they had reached a certain point, when they could easily have given the player access as soon as possible and maybe explained when they selected it, rather than just holding them back like idiots. The Mushroom house things weren't that interesting, either; the only one I really felt the need to use was the party combiner to feed newly acquired party members to existing ones.
Outside of that, the battles didn't feel strategic at all. You can drag a token anywhere on the board within a very short timespan, dragging other tokens behind it as you go. It's an okay mechanic by itself, but it has two major problems: One, If you touch a token you didn't mean to touch, it ends your turn. Two, your strategy is limited because of the random nature of the token generation. Maybe sometimes the random number gods will grant you a lot of combos, but the inflation of the numbers makes it all meaningless.
Overall, the game is just kind of boring.

A lot of people have played puzzle type games like Candy Crush and Bejeweled and so on. This game has a very similar feel, except there is an actual story to follow if you care for it. The game is fun, but its much more of a time killer than a time consumer. So if youre at work waiting for costumers try killing some time with this. It looks nice, the music isnt bad, and the graphics are cool. Plus you get two games in one??? What are you waiting for?

The concept of Bejeweled in any sort of RPG format always piques my interest. When this element is combine with a Pokemon capture system, I'm sold. P&Z manages to skirt the line in terms of copyright infringement with it's Pokemone like story, but provides an entertaining game in the Mario edition of the game. Stick to the Mario portion and you'll have a lot of fun with the game. All in all, a good game to pass the time during my long flights.

Good Puzzle Game, Somewhat Unique

Puzzle & Dragons is at heart a fairly basic match three type puzzle game with fantasy elements. Similar to Puzzle Quest, there's a meta game to progress you through a story but it's really all about the puzzling. The puzzles are solid and entertaining, the gameplay easy to learn without any serious curve. The Mario-ized version is unique enough from the base game to feel like you are getting two games on a single cartridge.
