    Minus Hannemann and Lombardo, but...

There have been plenty of detractors regarding Slayer's latest effort and I was prepared to be one of them. This is their first recording since the death of Jeff Hanneman (2013) and the firing of Dave Lombardo (2013), who in my eyes were the most important members in the band. In all honesty, I've never been much of a Kerry King fan, especially over the last few years, since he has turned into quite the dictator. I also preferred Jeff's musicianship and writing ability. Compound Jeff's passing with Lombardo being let go, because he questioned the economic distribution among band members and you have what should have been a total dumpster fire of an album. Maybe it's because I set the bar severely low, but I've actually really enjoyed this album. I suppose if you were looking for the next "Show No Mercy" (1983) or "Reign In Blood" (1986), you will be very disappointed. I on the other hand enjoy the bombastic, over the top precipitant guitar playing with the beyond heavy sound that Slayer has been noted for on albums like that which is "South of Heaven" (1988) and especially that of "Seasons In the Abyss" (1990). I think if you enjoy the two aforementioned records, then you will find this album to your liking. The biggest disappointment, is Kerry not allowing Gary Holt to join in on the writing process for this album. I'm guessing the dictator in that of Kerry would like to keep the royalties all for himself, so this isn't really that surprising. If Gary remains as Slayer's permanent replacement for Jeff, I would hope that Kerry brings Gary in on the next record, as he is one of the most underrated guitar players out there. This album is still pretty fresh to my ears, so it's hard to pick favorites at this time, but songs such as "Vices", "Cast the First Stone", "Chasing Death" and "Pride In Prejudice" are ones that I really have been enjoying. The only two songs that I sort of don't care for are "Implode" and "Atrocity Vendor". I don't think they're bad songs, but they don't have the staying power compared to the other tracks. What I like about new releases these days, are the amount of deluxe editions. I don't find myself watching DVD's as much, so I would have preferred a live C.D to that of the DVD. Having said that, it's an extra bonus nonetheless. The great thing about this this live show, it's from Wacken AND the setlist is awesome as it covers a great deal of Slayer's catalog from the 80's through that of "Seasons In the Abyss", along with a couple of tracks from "God Hates Us All" and "World Painted Blood". Where does this effort rank among Slayer albums? I don't know, as it is way too early to make such a judgment. Having said that, I think it is a record, with repeated listens that will surprise many. I would be remiss, if I didn't leave the reader with this....SLAYER!!!!

Everyone has been waiting since the death of Jeff Hanneman to see how they'd sound if the rest of the band continued. Everyone online seems to hate Kerry King and the general consensus I've got up until the release is that most people expected this record to bomb without Jeff and then their original drummer Dave Lombardo leaving. IMO, off the top they've kind of gone back to basic, simplistic riffs, which is probably due to Jeff no longer being around to handle most of the writing duties (RIP). Not a complete knock, because overall it's really not bad - it's still what you'd expect from Slayer. There's nothing wrong with simple, heavy riffs if they're done right and kept interesting. Their choice of having Gary Holt from Exodus take over the lead's was an excellent idea as he is the top of the heap on the metal scene today imo and well Kerry's leads haven't historically been known to be overly creative (usually the same formula - lot's of wah and tremolo abuse). Curious what Slayer would sound like if they let Holt in on the overall riff writing process - next record maybe if there is one and Kerry King allows it (ha, ha). The jist I get is he basically wrote most if not all of this album (minus some of the leads he let Holt take a stab at) and seems to be a hoarder of the process, at least for this first post- Hanneman record. Overall, I'd say the album is better than I thought it would be. One of the things that surprisingly stands out as a positive, is I think the drum work by Paul Bostaph is pretty good. He seems to get slammed because he's not Dave Lombardo. The drum work on this album actually stands out, which you can't truly say for a majority of other bands these days. Usually it's just there and doesn't really add anything to the overall tone of the album. On this album it actually stands out and is positively noticeable. I also give the band props for including not only a "making of the record" dvd which is always a nice bonus, but they also included the full Wacken concert from a year or so ago, which is a definite bonus. If you like Slayer.... buy the album, it goes well with the rest of them. They aren't breaking any new ground in the metal world, but I wouldn't say they've given up any either. They still do what they do better than a lot of other wannabe bands.

A fast, rollicking new Slayer album - right along the lines of Christ Illusion, which was one of my fave late Slayer records. Better & more varied than WPB. Love the Gary Holt solos - he has his own thing that fits w/Slayer & adds a new exciting dynamic. There is some super fast stuff here - "You Against You" is a great example along w/the title track. And Tom is still killing it - check out "Vices" there is no one that holds a candle to the aggression in his delivery. Def. worth checking out & do get the bonus disc for $2 extra - great concert & super awesome artwork here! Totally worth it for that alone. Bumps it to a 5!

Slayer is a band that means a lot to many people. The current lineup carries on after several major blows to the core. This album is a testament to the resilience of the band as a unit. It is extremely heavy and full of bitter fire. No matter which old hat saying I could throw in, just know an eternal pyre is set up to keep the flame alive. The album is focused and direct with the listener.

Slayer has been around since the eighties. In The beginning they were speed & aggression. Over the years they have progressed a bit. This CD was a long time coming but well worth the wait. It has the classic Slayer sound, Tom Araya has lost none of his bite. Guitar work is great and the songs are put together well. Go out and buy it you won't regret it.

After the loss of guitarist Jeff Hanneman and drummer Dave Lombardo, I was concerned with Slayers future. The first time I listened to this disc my worries were over. This is one of their best CD's in years! They blast away continuously in true Slayer fashion. From beginning to end a great liste. SLAYERRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

This album is classic Slayer: fast, aggressive, and relentless metal. Slayer excels at delivering their signature sound, and stay true to it in classic form in this excellent new release. You get the best of both worlds with fast-spaced thrash tracks like "Repentless" and "Atrocity Vendor," while also getting some more brooding tracks like "When the Stillness Comes." A must-buy album for Metal fans in 2015.

It seemed people were getting ready for this album to be bad because only two of the original guys were there; but I didn't think it was half bad. However it did seem to be missing something. Slayer aren't exactly know for their great lyrics but this time around they seem a little more cheesy, and lacking a tad bit of passion; my guess is because these guys have been around for a while. But it is by no means a bad album. if your a Slayer fan, pick it up.

Love this album...I think these guys have put together a brilliant package. I was, like may saddened by the death of Jeff Hanneman, however the song writing is top notch and the addition of Gary Holt is perfect. Reminds me of material they were doing 20 years ago. Get this, and crank it to 11!

The greatest band ever!!!! Another great album with animalistic hits like Repentless & When the stillness comes!!!! This is a must have for any Slayer or metal fan & Slayer is a must see in concert for any metal fan as they sound the same as they did in the 80's!!! Sick album & sick band!

This was 100% an impulse buy, I wasnt' aware slayer had a new album out; it was also the first CD/DVD I'd bought in over 5 years as I've been going with digital downloads for my music. This album is great, and the DVD of the concert was pretty good.

You pretty much know what you're going to get with Slayer and this disc is no exception. They will probably never blow our minds again like "Reign in Blood" did oh so many years ago. It's not great but it's not bad. There are a few really good songs but then they just kind of all start to run together and get monotonous. Many people have commented on the lyrics and I guess they don't bother me but must confess I haven't looked at them closely. Bostaph and Holt fill in admirably in my opinion.

If you listen to SLAYER you know they had lost a guitarist to the afterlife. That being said they have soldiered on and not missed a beat even with a new drummer in tow.If you like SLAYER you will love this CD/DVD.

I've listened to Slayer for years and they have yet to disappoint. Just as furious as previous albums and it seems like they get even heavier as they age. Will definitely not disappoint a hardcore Slayer fan.

There are some serious ragers on here that absolutely embody everything Slayer, but there are also a few meh tunes that recall some of their less than desirable material. All in all a really good album though. Just not their best.
