So Much for Survival Horror =/

Pros:
Resident Evil 5 was kind of a dissapointment to me. Yes the visuals and levels were done flawless, the bosses were brutal and the amount of weaponry was cool. The game was a great sensory experience and could be quite entertaining at times. (However lacking the Survival Horror feel)
Cons:
The game didn't once have me scrambling for my life or running low on ammo. The game was more Gears of War than a survival horror game. At some points ammo became annoying because I had too much of it. A lot of people complain about the stop and shoot, well it was used terrible in this game because of the amount of ammo you can get, the stop and shoot was used perfectly in RE4.
The story mode was way too linear, being unable to back track through major doors like you could in 4. Also the story mode itself was not was good as 4. Resident Evil 4 I spent months playing and replaying, Resident Evil 5 I spent a few weeks, plus the lack of a second story line (Ada's in RE4) was a let down. The game is also really short. However the mercenaries mode in 5 was a big improvement over 4.
My last issue with the game was Sheva's AI. She was so annoying, you would give her a machine gun and she'd continue to plunk away with her 9mm or when you have to have her hold the light she'd turn around leaving you in the dark, or worst of all use health items on you when you barely had a scratch on you. Play this game with a friend if you can to get rid of Sheva's dull factor.
Even with all the cons in my opinion I would recommend buying this game just because it can be quite entertaining at times and is a fun 3rd person shooter, but its not true survival horror like all the earlier Resident Evil games. If your a survival horror fan and looking for a good time get Dead Space instead.

Best Resident Evil game so far

This game is great. Despite what x-play, and other people say. first and foremost alot of peoples problems were with Sheva and the controls. If you liked RE4 but didnt like this game, then it makes no sense. In RE4 Ashley is probably the most annoying character in a videogame ever, she was the only reason I ever died in that game, and the entire time I played it I said to myself " I wish she could have guns" which they did in RE5. Of course Sheva doesnt always kill people, and sometimes wastes ammo, but alot of the time she helps you, if you die in this game just all together give up video games, because sheva revives you and often uses herbs on you, which Ashley lacked in RE4. The controls are something that I have no idea why people are fussing about. They are the exact same as RE4, which I love. I loved the controls in RE4 and I love them in RE5. I like the fact that you stand still when you shoot, because it helps you aim better, and you get more head shots. The one thing I did not like about this game was the real time invetory. The thing I loved about all the previous RE games, was that if you were in a jam you could just hit the invetory button , heal and go back to killing, but in RE5 its in real time, so you can still get attacked while healing or changing weapons. Overall though I thought this game was the best out of the series. The story line was amazing , and the game play was still as adrenaline pumping as the others. In my opinion the people that write the negative reviews didnt get past the first chapter. Which the point is to run and wait for the helicopter lol. I have beat this game on every difficultly, unlcoked every extra, and beat it on co-op and every time I have completed I have been satisfied. This is a great game , ignore negative reviews

Great game!!! I pre ordered it a month ago and have been like a junkie waiting for my fix...till last night! I played for about 8 hours yesterday and about the same today. Wanna know how far into the game I am? 8%! The game is huge. The graphics are top notch like most high quality games these days, the story line is superb, the cut scenes are not too long and boring like some games where you just wish it would get back to the game play. The best way to play is co-op, either with a friend in split screen or even better online with Live. Speaking of the split screen, normally, I totally hate spit screen and typically avoid some games because of it, but in RE5 it really doesn't bother me. The way they have the game built, there are doors that take both characters to open, so in a Live game, your partner can't just run off without you, plus for the most part you need your partner to accomplish certain tasks and in case you get into trouble and need them to save you. I think they did a spectacular job of making the co-op style of the game, making it so fun to work together and accomplish stuff.
I bought the strategy guide and love it and really feel it is necessary if you want to get the full bang for your buck with this game. It's written in a non giveaway kind of format so it's not just a do this and then do this kind of guide like most walk through's are. I mean, it does give you some stuff, but it doesn't tell you exactly how to play the game. The guide is 200+ pages long with great artwork and in depth information about all the weapons, enemies, etc, just like a high quality guide should be.
But anyway, if you want a game that will occupy you for quite some time, go for it! It's top notch in my opinion.

Not the best of RE series, but good play

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I have been a long-time fan of the RE series starting on my Wii console. In addition to this version for the Xbox 360, I also have RE6. RE5 has acceptable, but poor graphics, controlling movements (especially running) are a bit clunky, and you can't shoot and move simultaneously.
However, the storyline is good and the game gives hours of entertainment at 3 different levels. I find that the AI partner tends to waste a lot of ammo and shoves items over to your inventory all too quickly.
After playing the game several times and gathering a hoard of cash, you are able to get weaponry with infinite ammo, and some good tools. The easy mode is challenging enough, the normal and veteran are VERY challenging and you are graded for each level. You can play as Chris or Shiva with each chapter.
There is downloadable extra content which is a nice bonus. Though the graphics could use a facelift and better audio, the game is still worth buying. I would also highly recommend RE6 and RE Revelations in addition to this one.

Watch your back as you and partner walk or run through the zombie infected town in Africa, make sure to make your shots count in this Resident Evil because ammo is not always in the next corner. Search for your old friend Jill and clues to where she is being held, and run into a couple old fimilar faces. Play solo or co-op online and have friends help you get through to the next level. Beat the game and get your chance to unlock inf. ammo for the next time around with weapons that are fully upgraded. Def. a must play game, thanks capcom

Undeniable Excellency

Overview: When you mention “Resident Evil”, nearly anyone who has any knowledge of games from the past few years would instantaneously be able to identify it as the popular zombie-based horror franchise that has engulfed the globe. With the release of Resident Evil 5, fans worldwide rejoice as they take command of Chris Redfield and newcomer Sheva Alomar.
Plot (8/10): As with all Resident Evil games, a player can expect a considerable portion of the game’s plot before they even turn on the power button. Resident Evil 5 follows the story of Umbrella Corporation’s plethora of viruses that have spanned the globe, creating the Racoon City incident as well as the situation detailed in the Kennedy Report (Resident Evil 4’s storyline).
The player(s) follow the story of former S.T.A.R.S member, Chris Redfield and a new addition to the cast of Resident evil characters, Sheva Alomar. Redfield and Alomar belong to a worldwide organization known as the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, designed to combat bioterrorism threats throughout the globe. Redfield is dispatched from the North American division of the BSAA to assist the African division in investigating a reported Bio-Organic Weapon threat.
Throughout the story, a deeper insight is granted into Redfield’s life through a series of flashbacks and verbal descriptions of what had occurred in the ten years between the original catastrophes in Raccoon City. Many characters from Redfield’s past also make an appearance in Resident Evil 5, making Redfield’s mission more of a personal battle than anything else.
Gameplay (10/10): The gameplay in Resident Evil 5 nearly mirrors the Resident Evil 4 design with some interesting tweaks in the system. The combat is based on an over-the-shoulder-shooter system, with each character using a different personal viewpoint; players who play Chris Redfield will have their right shoulder be the primary view, where the left-handed Sheva will use the opposite. With the inability to use this system to perform a run-and-gun technique, a certain amount of tact and finesse will be imperative to survive Resident Evil 5.
In order to compensate for the inability to move and shoot simultaneously, a feature has been added to assist you in combating the various enemies that plague the different locations you visit throughout the game. One of the most useful techniques you will utilize is the ability to melee opponents after sending them into a dazed state by firing your weapon at a corresponding location in their body (for instance, by causing an enemy to topple over, you may proceed to crush their head with your foot).
Where Resident Evil 4 allowed players to bring up a menu and temporarily suspend the game while he or she switched weapons, Resident Evil 5 employs a more fast-paced approach. You are given a classic Nine-Item Selection Screen, similar to the original Resident Evil games; this screen appears when pressing a corresponding button to bring up the semi-transparent inventory while playing on the map. The nine items you choose to carry can be assigned to any of the spots on the three-by-three grid, with four spots being assigned as “Quick Switch” items that can be used by pressing the associated direction on the D-Pad, allowing players to switch their weapons in a tight situation, or if they are suddenly presented with an emergency to heal, they will not be forced to sort through the menu, saving valuable time.
Undoubtedly the most interesting gameplay aspect of Resident Evil 5 is the fact that you are always accompanied by your partner throughout the duration of the game. While team-based gamers are ecstatic about the ability to player with another friend online or offline, the game’s AI is nothing to scoff at.
Capcom-designed Sheva Alomar utilizes a beautifully-coded AI system, allowing her to rival the assistance another player may give. While the commands a player can issue to Sheva are considerably limited, the few orders you can give (Come here; go on ahead; cover me, etc) are all you will need to effectively utilize the AI-Sheva’s help. With an impressible ability to improvise, Sheva will always find the most logical and effective way to assist you.
That being said, all AI does have its flaws. While Sheva will always be looking out for you and taking an action to assist you, these actions have a tendency to be delayed. To elaborate: When fighting certain opponents, some may grapple onto you; while playing with another player, they can run up and press a button to release you from that grapple. Sheva can do the same, though she seems to be a masochist in the respect that she enjoys watching you struggle for a portion of time before deciding it is time to act.
Graphics/Environment (10/10): The beauty seen in the graphics of Resident Evil 5 is undeniable. From gameplay to cinematic, the environment and creatures present a stunning emphasis to whatever theme they wish to portray. The creature design for the bosses was excellent, with carefully-designed details emphasizing the extremes of the bioterrorism threat that Resident Evil has shown throughout its games.
The levels of Resident Evil 5, in addition to being beautifully-rendered, present a very open feel for the player(s). Many different side-paths may be taken to help achieve the objective. While not designed as a lengthy route, the difference between choosing to take the high-ground or the ground-level approach may change the tide of battle when playing.
Sound (4.5/5): While far from the best sound in a game, Resident Evil 5 presents music very much associated with your surroundings. Everything plays exactly where it should; action scenes have very fast-paced music where the cryptic sounds of suspense leave you on the edge of your seat. Capcom certainly didn’t create a musical masterpiece, though they’ve definitely improved their atmosphere.
Replay Factor (10/10): After completing your first run through the game, a wide assortment of unlocked goodies is in store for you. The Mercenaries Mode returns yet again to allow you to kill as many hostiles in a specified time limit. In addition to the Mercenaries Mode is New Game+, which will allow you to take all of your saved data from the ending of your first game and bring it into the next.
With rewards such as new difficulty modes, costumes, characters, and weapons, Resident Evil 5 is not a game you are going to put down just because you beat the primary storyline.
Addiction Factor (5/5): Resident Evil 5 has the power to suck you into its game and not let you go until you are done. With eighteen lengthy levels to be explored, each exposing more and more secrets of the late Umbrella Corporation, you will not want to rest until you are done with the storyline; and once you’ve rested, you will want to be right back at playing again.
Online co-op play was beautifully constructed and allows each player to keep track of their own personal equipment, even if playing on the same console. With the ability to help your friends out (or maybe get help yourself), there will never be a shortage of entertainment in Resident Evil 5.
Final Rating: (47.5/50) 95% - Remarkable
Resident Evil 5 was undeniably worth the wait, and stepping away from the console to detail this review was a daunting enough task. I would personally recommend this to any gamer.

I played the demo and hated it; I did not like the controls at all. Then I saw more reviews and got interested. I bought it, got used to the controls, and now I love it. The game is just sick and stressful. Attention to detail in the way weapons fire, dust floating in rays of light, and graphic textures are some of the best I've seen since Dead Space. It is very cinematic and the story line is great. You literally have to manage chaos most of the time, with a horde of zombies coming from unpredictable locations at all times. There are moments with cheesy dialogue and the controls are hard to adjust to. One major downside is that you cannot shoot or melee attack on the move; you are frozen while you aim and shoot. This makes getting attacked by zombies from behind inevitable as you cannot strategically pick off enemies on the go. Get in the habit of conserving your ammo with head shots and punches. I haven't played it in co-op but I've heard it is awesome. I would definitely recommend this game.

First off this was the first time i have ever played a resident evil game, and i love it. this game offers so much co-op capability and just hours of fun and challenges. the graphics are pure amazing, and the graphics match perfectly with the gameplay. thi game offers challenges that may get you stuck every once in a while, but there is so much fun in this game. although the bosses can be quite challenging, some of them i actually had a good time killling. co-op is amazing if one of your friends has the game, more or less, like gears of war co-op stlye. i was amazed when xplay gave this game a 3/5, if i rated this game, at least a definite 4/5. worth buying if friend also has game.

As a resident evil game its a great addition, if you like the RE series youll probably enjoy this but if you hate the RE series this isn't the one to start with. That being said, I think capcom limits their audience with the control schemes in these games. One of the main reasons I have never gotten into Resident Evil that much is the controls. The games got progressively harder so if you didn't really know the controls already its a steep learning curve. However I pushed through the learning curve and have gotten into the swing of the game and really enjoy it. The co-op is a welcome addition and the mercs mode is a nice touch but I do think if RE wants to continue to thrive they are going to have to expand on their online capabilities. All in all I would recommend this game to people with a fair amount of shooter experience but not to the casual gamer with little or no experience in either RE or shooters. As for the rest of us, its worth it.

Graphics: Excellent 9.0/10
Sound: Excellent 9.0/10
Gameplay: Very Good 7.5/10
Replay: Great 8.5/10
Overall: Great 8.5/10
Note to the reader: I have been playing the Resident Evil Series since it’s introduction on the Playstation One.
Graphics: Excellent 9.0/10
The graphics are excellent, the cut-scenes and in-game graphics are seamless, and this is as good as Capcom has done for this series. The shadows, lighting effects, and motions are great, and really immerse you into the game. The zombies, the backgrounds, and environments are detailed, rich, and engrossing.
Sound: Average – 9.0/10
The thing that Capcom has always nailed in this series is the sound, and this game is no exception. The sounds of the groans, the heightening tension of the music when an attack is coming, and the sounds of the weapons are dead on. The ambiance is set in the different areas by the increasing tones of heightening sense of importance through the use of music in this game.
Some may say that the voice work is poor, but it goes right along with the “cheesy” style that this series has always had, and the delivery is spot on for those that have been with the series for some time.
Gameplay: Very Good – 7.5/10
Let me start by saying that when playing this game with a friend in the co-op mode, there is nothing better. Having to people that can communicate and work together makes this game perfect. However, that being said, when this game is played in offline mode, it is not the best experience. The computer ally A.I. will shoot you in the back, use herbs unnecessarily, and not help in the most critical times of the game.
Replay Value – Great 8.5/10
Once the game is over, you will most likely be wanting more. Luckily, there are many unlockables, difficulty levels, and time runs to keep you busy for some time. To upgrade every weapon alone (without glitching) would take 6-8 playthroughs! The mercenaries mode, further co-op adventures, and just general playing will keep you coming back for more.
The score would have been greater if Capcom didn’t already include multiplayer on the disk, and charge $5 to download the unlock patch to play multiplayer. This is a trend I do not wish to se continue.
Overall – Great 8.5/10
This is a great game, do not get me wrong, but it is not perfect. This game is a detour off the survival horror that the series has created, and perfected, and has gone down the pure action path. This is not a bad thing, but the controls don’t lend themselves to that type of gameplay.
With less suspense, more gripping events because of the sheer amount of enemies, and over the top ammo and drive of the game, it is a mixture of Resident Evil 4, Gears of War, and the Matrix. Where this game does many things right, it is flawed and glitch in just as many areas. If this were any other title, it would not have been as scrutinized as closely as it was in this title.
Resident Evil 4 was, and still is, on my top 5 games of all time. This game will not place on that list, but I must recommend it just for the sheer fun, playability, and co-op opportunities that are available. This is a must play.

Everything I Expected

Resident Evil 4 marked the rebirth of the stagnant RE series, and RE5 improves on every aspect of RE4. The game looks fantastic, the real time inventory management keeps the intensity cranked up at all times. The next gen hardware allows way more on screen enemies than all previous RE titles making every fight absolutely nuts. The level design is great for huge battles against loads of enemies.
Online co-op can be set for invite only, or open play with anyone. The game also supports local co-op. Both online and local co-op allow for player2 to "drop in" or out without disrupting gameplay. Offline AI is helpful, not frustrating at all, but maybe a bit liberal with the health and ammo.
The controls are solid. Just as good as the PS2/Gamecube/Wii versions of RE4. I had zero problems with the aiming/combat controls, I thought they were fluid and comfortable. As far as not running while shooting-its more realistic that way. You cannot run at a full sprint and shoot a sniper rifle. No matter how good you are at halo and COD4.
To summarize RE5 is one of the best titles available on the console, and is a must have for action/adventure/or horror fans. That being said it is a mature title that depicts a great deal of realistic violence. Parents or grandparents considering buying this game for younger children should be cautioned. For the 20-30 something average gamer, this is the best RE yet, and probably the best 360 title of the year so far!

I'm getting this for the PS3 but it doesn't matter which system you get it as long as you get it. I'm writing this because there are people complaining about the controls and inventory system etc... My friend said the same thing but after playing the demo a few more times where he got use to the controls (aka the way resident evil plays a shooter) he was obsessed with it. It is not a rush and crush shooter like 99% of shooters are. Its a action horror game. Basically what i'm trying to say is that the people that complain about those things just aren't very good at the game because they are use to a rush and crush shooter. Resident Evil 4 is easily my favorite game of all time and even after 5 comes out it probably still will be because of how revolutionary it was. I'm not sure though because it will probably be close. So take the time and get good at the game and you'll love it. I've also heard that people were calling the demo hard. It is a little bit but after 2 tries i was destroying the game. I even killed the big axe guy at the end lol. So have fun with the demo and die waiting for the game 3/13/09!

A fresh addition to the best game series ever

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Brings back original characters in a larger scale then RE4(leon kennedy). Chris Redfield is the main character, and Jill Valentine and Albert Wesker play major roles in the game.
Mian idea switches to Bio-terrorism, similar (but by no means the same) as the film Resident Evil Degeneration.
This game is similar play to RE4, with the exception of partner/co-op. Weapon purchases and upgrades are no longer from a merchant, rather after levels or after you die.
Strays into the shooter genre as enemies carry AK-47s and grenades later on. The weapon selection is a lot bigger then previous REs, incuding RE4. Not quite the same zombie horror survival I grew up with, but keeps the series alive and fresh. Puzzles and key item use is sadly absent from this game. The story continues off RE4, but unlike RE4 includes a lot of story from the previous RE games (including RE Umbrella Chronicles on Wii).
Overall a great game. Strays from survival horror into shooter, but any diehard fan of the series will enjoy this game.

Just so everyone knows, I am basing this review off the demo. That is why I gave length a 4, but I'm sure it will take plenty of time to beat. Resident Evil games are known for that.
This is not a game for people who like all out jumping around shooting. That is not what these games are known for. The demo looked amazing, that was the first thing that I noticed. The levels that the demo had on it were very intense, I'm hoping there are a lot of situations like that.
I can't wait to play the co-op over xbox live. I remember when I first heard this game was coming out, I really hoped it had that feature. Great job for listening and making that happen.
If you have never played a Resident Evil game I would download the demo first, because it is a different style of game. But no one does it better. I will buy this when it comes out and would recommend it for sure.

This is my first Resident Evil game and overall I think its a decent game. The gameplay has its up's and downs. Some cool features is the coop and how you can share all of the items. Also, some of the weapons are really fun to use when killing the zombies. However, the controls can be clunky at times and movement can be a bit annoying. The fact that you cannot shoot will moving can be annoying as well, but you do get used to it easily. The boss battles and storyline are very low points in the game. The boss battles take forever at times and many of the boss creatures are just dumb looking. Once I got through half the game I started becoming a tad bit bored with it as it seemed a bit repetitive. As far as graphics go the ealier chapters look cooler than later chapters, but the game itsself look pretty good. After beating you do get unlockables and you can go back and play the game on a higher level. I personally do not enjoy the game enough for a second go around. In the end, RE5 is a ok game and some will like it and some will hate it, but I would tell someone about trying it out.

This game is great and everyone should try it. The controls are not as bad as some people think. It is not a run and gun but it is not that hard to put down someone well standing and the moving around. Some of the bigger bosses well have a quick button hit where you will dodge them. If you put stuff in your invintory you can place it so that it is easily accessable using the D-pad. This game is great and there are some good questions to be answered as you play. This game is visually stunning. I could not believe how good this game looks when you are in different environments. Check this game out you will not be disappointed.

I have to admit, everything about this game is superb EXCEPT - the controls when it comes to combat. The menu system (both real time and between chapters) is rather clunky. This is not a run-and-gun type of game. Each time you aim your gun, you stand stationary. You can't even jump back when a foe jumps right in front of you, you either have to pray that you have a properly loaded weapon in hand or turn 180-degrees then run then turn another 180-degrees and then fire. This game was truly meant to be played with a human controlling Sheva (or Chris) or vice versa. The game is very entertaining and amazingly short yet you'll see the "Your Partner Got Killed" or "You Got Killed" many many times. It has become more of a trial and error type of game near the end. It is quite an awesome game and the only cons for this game it the clunky controls that were taken from Resident Evil 4. Even when you are running away from zombies, you have to STOP just to reload your weapon. Real time menu makes it even harder. You can't just select menu to get healed because zombies will just hack away at you while you're busy swapping with your partner for an herb to get healed. Overall, great game. Controls are a huge bummer in this game.

Its just amazing. The graphics are great and it runs so smooth. Anybody who enjoyed RE4 will love this game. It basically plays the same, except for the inventory is different, it doesn't pause the game which is what I used for a panic(need to change to a shotgun, grenade, rifle, etc. and to calm myself and strategize before getting back into gameplay). And those that don't like the controls, it is not a FPS, this is how RE has always been.
The AI seems more difficult which will make the game last longer. Everybody loves fighting off hoards of zombies/infected. Play the demo if you haven't yet.
