I got this when it was on sale for $50 and honestly I'm glad I didn't pay $70 for it. This game isn't for everyone. The graphics, controls, and production value is excellent, but the mechanics can be a pain in the @$$. This game is designed to be really difficult. You are going to die constantly and each time you die, you basically start over from scratch with nothing except traversal upgrades you managed to get before you died. There are no save points and check points cost ether (the only rare in-game currency that carries over if you die). Most of the chests with items will screw you over with horrible status effects and bosses can be a royal pain if you dont have a decent weapon and a big enough life meter. I'd only recommend this to the truly hardcore people who like a serious challenge.

Returnal is one of the best Rogue-likes you can find. It really shines with its mood-setting through the music and visuals. The story is really hooking me and I want to see where it ends. The combat is fun with all the different ways you can equip yourself (weapons, traits, parasites, and consumables). I think this is a must-buy for PS5 owners!

I'm rating this excellent even though I cannot get past the 2nd Biome. I pour 25 plus hours into this game and unfortunately for me, I'm not talented enough to beat the game. That said the game is excellent. It is one of the few games where playing it and getting stuck did not deter me from continuing. I highly recommend at least giving it a try and if you are able to dedicate some time to it you could actually beat it.

As a huge fan of the studio at HouseMarque, I have enjoyed all their PS exclusives. From Super Stardust, Resogun and now Returnal each is very addicting think of Resogun as the evolution 3d version of those games. I like to think of it as Metroid meets Dark Souls. Whats cool each playthrough is different yet it builds on the story. Also use the 3d PS5 headset sounds amazing and the Dualsense helps.

Fun game with a controversial gameplay mechanic...

Sony has delivered another PS5-exclusive (...standing next to Demon Souls and couple others), it's nice to see some AAA+ next-gen games starting to slowly trickle in about 6 months later. Despite the difficulty and the controversial "rogue-like" gameplay without a save option during missions...just anticipate you'll need to plan out your schedule playing it. This game is no brainer, definitely get it for your PS5!

This game was a head-trip. The story is deep, psychological, thoughtful, and maybe a bit disturbing. It's a tale of love, loss, hope, and space. The game mechanics are unique. The game's atmosphere and ambiance is excellent, and the voice actor for the main character does a good job of conveying the emotion of the game.

Best game of this year so far . If you have a PS5 you need to get this game ASAP! Gameplay, story, sound, soundtrack, everything is top notch. Even better experience if you have the PS5 spacial audio headphones. Definitely play this game in the dark late at night. ps- if you don't know what the title means - watch the girlfriendreviews video of this on youtube

This game isn't for everybody... however, if you enjoy a punishing, but rewarding gameplay mechanic, this might be up your alley. This definitely isn't for those gamers with a short temper, as you WILL die a LOT. Dying is actually one of the core mechanics of Returnal, so if you have the patience, this is a very rewarding experience.

It's so cool to see the mix of bullet-hell, shooting, and arcade in here. The challenge is perfect and each run gives you something different every time. After beating Act I, I started runs only to die within the first 10 minutes and I lost my patience with the game. To anyone reading this, I seriously recommend changing the controls of the game that suit you. The default controls are a little annoying. After I did this, the game was super comfortable to play and it was really hard to lose runs after that. The cycle of getting upgrades, different guns, and different alt-fire modes with the obtained guns is a ton of fun.

You will die a lot. That's the point. Very similar to that Dark Souls type of game but a bit easier over time in my opinion. It can be frustrating at times, but the persistence pays off big when you are successful. Really a gorgeous game and the visuals are incredible. !Warning! If you are looking for a causal game to unwind after work, this is not the game for you.

Graphics, motion, fun factor, and story are all surprisingly polished. Sony really does make sure exclusives release with high quality. Keep on mind, this game is not easy. Death restarts an entire run making it more frustrating than a Souls-like game. But if you want a polished challenge, you'll love it! If not, skip

A great game I will never solve or even see past the first area. Wayyyy too difficult for me but it is beautiful and has a awesome combat feel. I guess if you like the Dark Souls type games you'd like this even though it isn't exactly the same but it does share some of the challenging aspects

Wanna game that makes you "get good" and realize the souls games absolutely dont need you to be? This may be for you. Randomly generated levels, random drops, and absolutely anything can kill you quick, and you restart from the very beginning. Yes the first time you manage to beat a level boss you earn keys that let you take short cuts to the next level. But you are still forced restart your entire health pool, equipment load out,and weapon levels everytime you die and there aren't any saves. So you can spend literally hours prepping for a boss run and if you die you have to spend hours prepping again before you can even try again. Or get good. This game devoures time. Very easy to play for hours and make absolutely zero progress.

    PERFECT PS5 Game

One of the most amazing games I've ever played. The graphics are top notch (1080p @ 60fps). The particle effects are particularly impressive. Great gunplay, cool enemies, and varied levels making the "die and repeat" aspect easy to get into. With the recent Tower update, the game is worth even the pricey $70 price, however on sale it is a MUST buy even for those that may not feel they would enjoy this type of rogue-like game. Additionally, the PS5's DualSense controllers are put to good use with the vibration and sound used especially well from the controller. If you like fast paced shooter gameplay, you will not regret buying this game.

Didn’t expect to like this game as much as I did. I had zero experience with rouge like games but decided to give it a try. Was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this game. Yes it can be difficult at first but once you get the pattern of enemy attacks down it’s much easier.

Great game. Its takes advantage of the ps5 controlers haptic feed back. Which i hope to see incorporated into other games. Visual are stunning. Story is intriguing. Not a easy game. U will DIE alot. I suggest watching some utbue videos on it. See if its for you . Because of difficulty this kind of game isnt fro everyone.

Game is phenomenal. It's but tough but fair, and the difficulty was publicized before purchases were finalized. The game is creepy, and each permanent accomplishment feels like a big deal. The lack of any loading screen is impressive and helps to maintain immersion.

This game will hook you. Absolutely gorgeous, sounds amazing, controls spot-on, and gameplay's very challenging. Really shows off what the PS5 can do. The whole premise of not being able to save whenever is a refreshing change of pace from modern games today. Makes finally beating a boss all the more satisfying. Don't get too hung up on keeping your progress "saved" w/ rest mode. It only really matters if you're in the middle of a run. Otherwise, finish your run then call it quits for the day. Your character's stats, progress in story, and everything you've unlocked will be there tomorrow.

Live die repeat, definitely been done before, but not like this. Really gripping setting, very prometheus vibes, but more tentacles. Very well polished. This game is hard, it will make you work and learn the mechanics in order to beat each "level."
