This is an excellent addition to ring. I love ring security system and I was not keen on having several ring contact sensors and with retrofit, I am able to connect everything. One concern is "how Long those batteries will last". Ring is charging lot of money though. Similar non-ring products are half or 1/3 the price, but they don't integrate with ring

This retrofit allowed my existing alarm system to work with ring. No need to buy a bunch of wireless connections. Just needs the motion detector

We paired this with a ring starter pack and used it to enable our existing sensors to function and save the money from buying extra sensors. My only drawback is complexity of installation.

Retrofit kit requires some knowledge of how a wired alarm works and specifics of its wiring so not for total n00bs but can be figured out with some research and careful effort.

Good I guess but Best Buy had no idea what they were talking about with these. I’m glad I was able to rerun mine in time. These are meant to work with existing contact sensors that are WIRED. C’mon Best Buy!

This retrofit base allowed us to use our existing window/door contacts. We chose to have a ring installer complete the wiring between the old box and this unit.

Faulty retrofit kit needed to be replaced

    Posted .

I originally purchased and installed the retrofit kit when it first came out. We have had quite a few false alarms, and Ring blamed our sensors that worked fine in the old system. They all were fine when tested with a multimeter. I ended up having the retrofit kit replaced and we have not experienced any false alarms with the new one. If you are having issues, it may be the retrofit kit or bad wired sensors. You can find replacement wired sensors online, you just need to know what type you have. Mine are recessed in the window sash/frames, and door frames so I would much rather keep those vs having the ugly bulky wireless sensors installed. Another downside is you cannot use existing motion sensors or smoke alarms with the retrofit kit as they're not compatible. If you run power separately to the motion sensors, you can use them in the retrofit kit. I decided not to. For what this is, it is definitely overpriced. It is battery powered.

      Hello David,
Thank you for taking the time to share your Ring Alarm Retrofit Kit experience with us directly. We appreciate it. We are pleased to read that a replacement Retrofit Kit resolved the false alarm issue you were experiencing. Your Ring Alarm Base Station will need to be connected to the internet via wifi or ethernet, and cannot be on cellular backup during the Retrofit Alarm Kit installation. Rest assured, we are here to provide you with some more information regarding the existing sensors limitations.
To see if the Ring Retrofit Alarm Kit will work with the contact sensor zones wired to your alarm panel, you’ll need to verify the resistance on your zones. Check your alarm panel and documentation to confirm compatibility.
The Ring Retrofit Alarm Kit design supports a maximum resistance of up to 5200 ohms under all conditions of temperature, battery, etc., with or without end of line resistors. This is intended to tolerate 4.7K, 1K or 2K end of line resistors commonly found in wired systems. You can wire up to 8 zones with one Retrofit Alarm Kit. If you have more than 8 zones, you can add additional Retrofit Alarm Kit devices to the same Ring Alarm.
