Great for beginners and advanced players alike

i'd read about this game but i was leery. i'm a mostly self-taught guitarist and would consider my skills to be intermediate, so i thought the game might be a little too easy. my first impression confirmed my suspicion. HOWEVER, i quickly discovered just how adaptive the game is. it "learned" from me and amped up the difficulty level. i was quickly sucked in and found myself in a real challenge! first of all, my impression of the tracks you play along with is "wow!" great selection. i love that they are artist original recordings. reminded me of when i was 15, rocking out to my favorite songs and figuring out the chords as i went along. the skills challenges provide the necessary fundamental techniques that beginners need to understand basic guitar playing. i really like the performance mode where you play different gigs and, if you score well, get to play bonus "encore" songs. it was fun that the encore songs were brand new so you're really having to fight to keep up - just like when you're doing a real gig and the crowd's going wild, but you've run out of rehearsed material so you just have to go for song you may not have polished yet. overall, this is a fun game with helpful lessons in guitar basics for the novice player and some very fun and challenging "levels" for those with more advanced chops. i'll be playing a lot more of this game - as will my 6yo son!

It's a great game and I can see how it woud teach you to play guitar. However, it could be a little more organized in terms of progression. I wish it was more of a step by step direction and more direction on fingering and such. It is fun and will definately get you to play and pratice. Over all a fun way to learn guitar.

I bought this based on the preview I read on GI/internet. boy boy boy. This is perfect for someone who likes to read stuff about guitar but never actually have will to practice. This game adjusts game level based on how well you play, so you don't need to adjust difficulty of the game at all. It will slowly show you different technical challenge based on how good you are. This is like having a guitar teacher for beginner for price of... one week lesson!!!!! I'm writing a review here to promote this game, so more ppl will buy this game. So this game will get more downloadable content and possible Rocksmith 2 who knows? I just love the fact I can use my beginner electric guitar I bought for 100 bucks and slowly practice and not get board like I used to. Seriously, if you are reading reviews wondering about buying this game because you or someone you know is into guitar, get it now. Just get it I beg you!!! This game must do well for the sake of this type of game industry!!!! for me!!!!

I ruined a brand new manicure for this game - played it for 4 hours the first night I opened it! Love it! I do wish that they had added the notes to the single note play (or maybe I just don't know how to turn that on yet?) They could have easily added the string names off to the side and made those little square notes into letter icons. That way people would be learning the actual music as well. Still, this game is pretty darn cool and a great supplement to my lessons. It will definitely help with speed and dexterity. I want this game for the bass!!!! I also would love some more variety in the music - not all guitar players listen to classic rock. Can I get some R&B or funk?

Awesome product. I can play and set up my own amps and sound effects. Cool sound effects. It won't let me go to another song until I have perfected the one I am on. Great tutor. It could do better on chords. and it will cut out on yor sometimes and will have to reboot. That seems to be a defect.

The game is pretty good, I have never played guitar before, but the game adjusts to your skill by dropping notes or adding depending on how good you're performing. What I like is that as you keep progressing you get introduced to different techniques, and suggest you to practice them.

    This Game is Great!

This game is excellent because you can use your own REAL guitar. It is great for practice; it features games that build basic to advanced skills on the guitar. You start very easy and if you can handle it the game will increase difficulty and if it's too much it will drop it back down and make recommendations on what to practice with. It does recommend that you get the audio splitting cable if you use HDMI because of a slight delay in sound. Easy fix, cheap cable to run audio threw a stereo or straight to TV speakers. Overall excellent game, my brother doesn't play the guitar and he was playing having a blast!

Seeing this in action just makes me want to pay extra for it to come out sooner! No more, will you jam on your 5 color button platic guitar. If you don't know how to play, this game can teach you one note at a time until you master the song you pick. Then, hook your Guitar into your amp and show everybody what you learned. Can't do that with Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Although I think Rockband 3 came out with the advanced mode and Powre Gig: Rise of the Six String have the abilities to play with a six string but they are a level behind with their plastic controllers. If you don't believe me, try this game for yourself when it comes out this fall, 2011! If there is an online mode for XBOX 360 live, I will see you there masters of the Six String. All they need now is Bass and we are Rockin!

Unlike playing Guitar Hero, where you play a cheap plastic fake guitar. This game uses a real guitar, so you actually learn to play music. Got this as a Christmas present and my GF found out the guitar in the packaged deal isn't a standard size guitar, so she got the Fender Starcaster package and the Game seperate. Way to go Hun!

Pretty solid game, with teaching you chords its not so good though, when you advance in the song theyll just start throwing you at them, and not the most interesting play list, still some good stuff though. a lot of the stuff seems like its just rhythm guitar, downloaded Freebird and it didn't do the solo. Maybe not high enough level, don't play very often. It's definately worth the money though, good mini games and good practice. Has neat amp effects, it's digital so the sound is decent but still good for digital. Fun to mess around on

    Schizophrenic Application

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Rocksmith needs to decide if it's a guitar game or a guitar instructor. By not deciding to really be one or the other I believe it fails at being either. As a game it's going to be overwhelming. Imagine a Guitar Hero controller with 144 buttons and six toggles and a dozen ways of indicating how a note should be rendered on that controller. A little mind-blowing. As an instructional application the gaming aspects are constantly interfering. The music notation is neither sheet music nor (in its default configuration) tab. The notation can be "inverted" to display as tab, but that should have been the default. Anyone not familiar with tab is not going to know to go looking for the setting, and then later have a problem when they try to move beyond the included set. (The set is another problem, and while it's good to be able to play in a variety of genres, motivation is provided by playing songs you like and already know [as in "know how they go", not "know how to play] and a very small set of the included songs are anything I'd normally listen to or want to play). The "progressive complexity" method of starting with a simpler version of a song's riff and then adding notes as the simpler ones are mastered is not how it's done. The only way to learn a passage of music is to play it *as it is to be played* starting slowly and gradually increasing the speed (not the number of notes) over and over and over again. Just when you've committed a riff to "muscle memory" the game suddenly throws in new notes (and sometimes new notation that you've never seen before unless you've gone through all the "technique" sections beforehand). Now you have to unlearn what you just learned to accommodate what is essentially a different passage. There's an option to reset all songs to their *lowest* level, or the highest complexity level *you've achieved*, but none to have the program always use all the notes all the time. The number of times a new unknown part needs to be repeated can be immense. As Zak Wylde has said "You just start out real slow and play it a million times". Or at least until the other people in the house threaten to throw you and the guitar out. The gaming aspects of the "Riff Repeater" (which has some otherwise good intentions) means that every time you mess up you lose a "life". Lose three and it's game over. You have to then re-navigate the (unwieldy) menu system and *re-tune the guitar* before you can have at it again. I understand that the guitar must be in tune (or in tune as the program would have it) so that it can function. But surely the player can determine if the game is calling bad notes on properly fretted ones and ask for the tuner. No guitar that isn't broken is going to go out of tune after three runs of the verse riff of "Satisfaction". It's also helpful when learning a song to be able to see what part is coming up. The notes appearing from some far off netherworld and sliding towards you is a gaming aspect and is not as useful as being able to see the score ahead of time. A display (or the option of one) that would display the song as tab or sheet music a page at a time and highlight the notes as they are to be played would be more helpful. I'm still not completely sold on the idea of an automated "teacher" even if all the options above were incorporated. A video of a technique can only take you so far. If you don't grasp the concept and learn it wrong it can be hard to undo, and a simple problem with physical technique that a human instructor could spot and correct in a moment can become a long-term liability if the guitar is learned using Rocksmith. In addition, there's more to getting a song to move listeners than hitting the right notes at the right time. That's only the beginning. A human instructor can help the player get the feel and soul of playing the instrument to be second nature. I'm not sure any game can. There's a brief period of euphoria when you start using this and realize "Hey, I'm playing a song!", and it can be fun and make practice more interesting. But I'm just not as enthusiastic about this after several weeks of use as I was when I got it. In summation, the "progressive complexity" approach, constant tripping through the menu system, re-tuning, and lack of immediate feedback and correction that a live instructor can provide are the greatest hindrances of the program and comprise my major caveats about the game. All of the above is, of course, my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

I'm a guitarist Bought this to get the kids interested. All found it frustrating and walked away. NO guidance for beginners. Menu design is awful. Screens go black and you have no idea if it's loading or what. Options settings are confusing. For example, if you set low difficulty, go back to that setting and it says highest. Chords are upside down in the games. This is nothing like all the videos hyping the game. A lot of really poor organization and menu design. Wasted $80... Doubt kids will touch it again. One of the kids already had a year of lessons and hated it. I thought playing with amps and pedals might be fun, but all are locked until an advanced guitarist has to go thru the beginner phase.
