i understand that this program is supposed to mimic a child learning a new language. I've used this for about a week now and i'm done with unit 1 level 1. it's a good refresher for me. I took 2 semesters in college 10 yrs ago, and i happen to still remember the hiragana (alphabets) so it's easy for me to read and follow the lesson. What I found a bit disturbing was that there's no translation during the lesson in english. How is a student supposed to know what the sentence means? there are pictures but you can't always figure out easily what the japanese means. it's simple when you're learning how to say apple in japanese, but others are not too clear. i'm just not sure how a person who has never learned a language before can pick up through this program. I don't think i would be able to and it would be super difficult to a point that i might give up. i also agree with another reviewer that setting up was difficult. I downloaded the product with an activation code without an issue, but when i had to start/activate my lesson, i had an error message. i had to contact customer service to get it corrected. also the purchase comes with a three months live tutor/interactions with other native speakers to practice your language skills. after that there's a fee for sure. I don't even know how i activated that service when i activated my program. so i only got 3 months left and customer service said they cannot stop the clock. it would be a total waste bc i will not be able to take advtange of this program as i'm not even ready to speak the language on a basic level. i think it's a way for the company to make extra money. i would still recommend this for someone who wants to learn a language on their own. as i have never tried other product before besides taking a real course, this seems to be a decent alternative.

Very simply the software will not run on windows 10 and the support is horrific. After over 4 hours with their tech support was not able to get it to run. I actually knew more about the error than the tech support and they could not resolve the issues. I am returning to Best Buy in the hopes of getting a refund.

Worth every penny, even though it's a lot of them

As the title says, it may take a lot of pennies but is worth everyone one of them. Most classes cost at least same as this software, usually more. I have taken several language classes for multiple languages, but this beat them all. I would buy this again and I would easily pay tripple for it! I got in about 1-2 months what a year in regular college level courses gave me. It's so easy. There is no huge vocab bank to learn. It's simply having a conversation or playing a game or two. It doesn't even feel like learning. After a week or two, you will notice that you understand Japanese, very basic at this point of course, and you won't remember learning it. I use the cds in my car and the programs for my iphone at the gym on the tredmill. I use the computer software about 30 minutes a day when I am waiting for my family to get home. I usually hate to stop since using it is so enjoyable. You will not regret buying this once you use it. If your like me, you may freak out about having spent this much while it is being delivered. But when you get it, use it for a good 30 minutes to an hour and you will be hooked. I am going to be in Japan for about 1 year as soon as I am finished with my current classes; work is sending me. I now have no fears about the language barriers.

    Great for learning Japanese!

I have never had any lessons or classes in the Japanese language, so this is all brand new to me. I've gotten through the first lesson and it has been fantastic! I haven't been focusing on reading or writing as much as listening, speaking and pronunciation, but I still find myself able to recognize words and sounds just from seeing them regularly. Japanese is a hard language to learn, but Rosetta Stone breaks it down so you can easily get the hang of it. I prefer to use the microphone on my laptop because it picks up my voice easier than the one provided, but I haven't had issues with the one they give you. Only gets 4 stars because of the price! Fantastic product!
