I tried both the series 7 and series 8. The main difference I could see was during low light scene you can see the back lighting on the series 7, but this is only on low quality like broadcast DTV. With a true 4k source the both 7 and 8 look very close in quality. 8 has more contrast and more connection (1 more HDMI and composite video connectors). Both are excellent choices.

As a bonus, the bezels are so small that it will fit in the <40" picture moving box from home depot. No issues with sound quality. Can't comment on software as I use a Firestick 4k and Chromecast.
