The Q90T QLED 4K UHD HDR TV is not a value focused 4K TV. It doesn’t cut corners to provide you’re the cheapest display on the marketing. Blacks are dark, bright images are truly HDR, the integrated Smart Home tools are class leading, the input latency is one of the best on the market, and the available streaming apps make cord cutting not only easy, but almost impossible to resist. This is the flagship 4K UHD TV of Samsung’s 2020 4K TV line up. My living room has been sporting a 2016 QLED from Samsung, and that TV became my baseline for comparing TVs. In 2019 we got a LG NanoCell TV for our master bedroom. It was a fantastic TV with excellent viewing angles and near perfect color, however, it just did not look as good our 2016 QLED in the living room. After much debate, we decided we upgrade our living room TV to a larger display size and move the 2016 QLED to our bedroom. The LG NanoCell is still a great TV, so it was a great gift my parents and was a major upgrade for them! Movies and gaming are our main forms on entertainment on the TV, so we knew we wanted a flagship 4K TV where color, HDR, viewing angles, and latency would be major sticking points. The choice was between the LG CX OLED and Q90T QLED. When you understand the basics of OLED and QLED, it seems the obvious choice would be the LG CX. However, the finer points and nuances make the decision less obvious. Undoubtedly, the CX with its OLED panel has more accurate colors overall and deeper blacks with self-lit pixels, but the peak brightness of the CX makes viewing the TV in a room with natural lighting less appealing than the much brighter Q09T. Additionally, the black levels on Samsung’s QLED panels has always been fantastic, and this TV does not disappoint with even darker blacks than my previous QLED. Additionally, I am not looking forward to replacing my TV for at least five years, so with frequent gaming sessions or frequent news or sports viewing, I am still a bit worried about screen burn-in. This is something that QLED is immune to. This display is just about just over an inch think, so it is thicker than OLED panels, but Samsung was clever. They used this increased thickness to include fantastic sound options. The intelligent object tracking sound processing enables the sound to “emanate” from the region of the screen that the object is that making the noise. It is a clever feature, and really surprised me how well it worked. Overall, the sound is great and the larger display with thickness just over an inch will almost certainly outperform most budget and mid-range soundbars. However, if you are using a high-quality sound system or Dolby Atmos system, you will likely continue to utilize those systems, but again, I was shocked at the sound out of the box! No paper-thin OLED will sound anywhere close to this good. Our home is highly automated with SmartThings and other smart home devices, so the ability to interact with our smart home systems is something that is highly appreciated. I was pleasantly surprised, when my Ring Doorbell was rung, and a picture in picture window with a live view of my door popped up on my TV. Additionally, the TV used the SmartThings app to expedite the TV setup. It made entering WiFi connectivity information, geographic settings, and the review of other available services and disclosures quick and efficient. I love being able to control the many systems of my home through the TV. AirPlay and other device to display streaming makes sharing content from your phone or laptop a snap. It is built in, and so easy to use. Plus, you can do split screen viewing of this content. Say hello to managing your fantasy teams while watching live sports or playing a game while you pull up a guide on your phone displayed on your TV. A small feature that really has made a big impact! Additionally, we can easily stream what is on the TV to our Samsung Family Hub refrigerator, so we can continue the action while prepping a meal in the kitchen. This is such a handy feature! You have the choice of using Samsung Bixby or Amazon Alexa to control many features on the TV. I appreciate having the choice between either, and the simple smart remote control acts as both the microphone and a universal remote for most of the devices you attached to the TV limiting the number of remotes you need! For us the choice was easy. We went with the Q90T, and we do not regret for a moment. If we didn’t care about smart home integration, worry about screen burn-in, and had a dedicated dark theater room, we would have picked the LG CX, but for a regular home and with buyers that want the best flagship display, the QLED Q90T was the only way to go.
