THE GOOD Very slim. Sits just a half-inch tall, in a 12-by-8 footprint. I measured it next to a Microsoft Surface Pro. One of the lightest laptops you can buy. At about 2.5 pounds, probably only the LG Gram is lighter. Beautiful HD screen. It’s Samsung, so naturally I expected this. And it’s a touch-screen, too. Illuminated keyboard, great for working in low lighting conditions. Simple setup. Turn on the machine and it guides you through everything, including the Windows 11 update. Decent number of ports – one USBC, two USBA’s, one HDMI. Micro SD card reader. Attractive, dark cabinet. It’s refreshing to see this slate-colored system rather than a white or silver one. COULD BE BETTER Completely sealed body. This means if you want to do any servicing yourself – like you can with a Dell system (which Best Buy also sells, like the Inspiron 7000) – you’re out of luck. There are no screws anywhere on the unit – an impressive engineering marvel, in a sense. If you get one of the lower spec machines (memory and storage) you cannot upgrade. If you think you might need more, get this top of the line one – 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. Ambient light sensor can’t be controlled (without a physical cover). I found this royally annoying. No way to change it – not in Windows, not in the Samsung built-in app, nothing. If you selected to have the keyboard backlight on, it will stay on for a few moments after the choice, then go out. The inelegant solution I came up with was to put a small black square – a sticker – over the ambient light sensor, which is just to the right of the blue pilot light (it looks like a pinhole). Until Samsung provides a way to control this, this is what you’re left with, unless it doesn’t bother you. The motivation was to make the machine more energy efficient, I can only guess. Price point. I got this for about $800 on a Black Friday special – it normally hits the wallet at over a grand. I was wanting a laptop with 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of RAM. This was the only system – with a touch screen – that had it all when I was shopping. Lots of bloatware. You can remove it yourself, of course, but it’s still mildly annoying that the machine you buy for yourself is turned into a billboard when you’re trying to get settled. It won’t bug most people, but the three-sided thin bezel makes me wonder why Samsung didn’t just go thin bezels all around the screen. The lower part is about a half-inch wide black strip which has the Samsung logo – if you hold it up to a very bright light. To my knowledge, this thick bezel doesn’t do anything for the operation of the system, so I have to assume it’s decorative. VERDICT This unit replaced an Asus Q-Series laptop I bought at Best Buy just two years ago. It topped out at 8 GB of RAM, so I had to look further afield to find a bigger system. When the Black Friday sale came around, I jumped on it. If the machine goes on sale again (and it’ll likely be a while) jump on this system, because you’re going to be hard pressed to find so much RAM and so much storage at this price point. I’ve been using Samsung phones for 10 years, and have several Samsung tablets. I figured I’d give one of their bigger devices a shot. So far, I’ve been impressed.
