I was anxious to try this device since I use Smartthings all over my house and take advantage of all of the features including geofencing using my android phone. The device is very small and is managed using the Samsung Smartthings app and adding the device to my existing account was fairly straight forward. The app walks you through when to press the button and what the status lights mean. The Smartthings app is available for iPhone or Android. The geofencing is really nice for alerts, I put this in my daughter’s car (without her knowing). Once she was on her way out, I was able to launch the Smartthings app and see where she was heading. When you tap the device in the Smartthings app, it launches a map where you can see the location and path the device has taken. Thankfully there were no surprises! The battery life is decent at 5 days on a full charge. I am toying with the idea of hardwiring it into the car power so that it stays on all the time. I love that it comes with a full year of cellular data connection and I believe after that the cost is not that much to continue. I have been pretty happy with Samsung’s Smartthings products and this tracker is a good addition. If you have a pet or a kid you want to keep track of, this device is a great choice. It is accurate and easy to use

Since I got a year of free service along with this device, I don't know what kind of upkeep this is going to take after that year. But for now, it's actually kind of a neat device if your specific use case collides with it's features. I'll start to talk about setup. I already had the SmartThings app on my phone for other Samsung devices I own so that was pretty easy. It requires an account so you'll need to create one if you're new. Adding the tracker was relatively easy through the app but there were a couple of hiccups. I'm not sure if it was a battery issue (I don't think my device came very charged up) but for a while, when I held the button like it told me, the light would just turn blue instead of the cycled blue green red that it said would happen. After letting it charge for a while, it finally managed to pair. I don't know what exactly was wrong here but it eventually worked. After that, it takes a couple of minutes to activate your cellular service and then it'll show up in the app. Using the tracker works pretty well. Accuracy was on par with my phone probably. I didn't notice any glaring issues with it. Sometimes it would pinpoint a lot closer than other times but usually the range was pretty small. If you are just attaching this to a device that you take with you everywhere or maybe throwing it in a bag you travel with a lot, you'll be able to pull the location of the tracker on demand whenever you want (as long as the battery lasts). If you're looking for an always on tracker, move on. This isn't the tracker you're looking for. This is an on demand, "I lost it" kind of tracker that you'd attach to a dog collar or give to a child when he goes to the park so you can keep tabs on them manually when you need to. There is a "auto tracking" mode you can turn on but it only lasts 10 minutes and it'll continuously track something for that time. So if you're looking to spy on your wife or boyfriend by slipping this in their car or something, you'll need to stay glued to the phone and keep manually turning on tracking mode. The last method of tracking is to double press the physical button on the device to "check in" to the app. This will record it's location and send you a notification. Probably good for sending with your teen and letting them double tap the button to let you know they're at the place they said they were going and are ok or something. Battery life seemed good enough for what it was for. From a full charge to dead, the tracker lasted about 4 days with minimal use. It was kind of what I figure the general use case is for the tracker. I threw it in my wife's purse and had her check in on occasion and I'd just update the location manually once or twice a day. With more use, you'll maybe need to charge it every other day or something. The app does alert you when the battery is almost dead and then again when the tracker turns off because it's dead (or if you just turn it off). All in all, it's a pretty nice device. It's small and does what it's supposed to. If you're looking for a tracker that maps out everywhere the tracker has been over the last 24 hours or something, this isn't what you want. If you're just looking to manually keep tabs on a pet, loved one or device and this fits your budget, I'd say go for it.

    Affordable GPS Tracking With Limitations

This is an affordable GPS tracking device that includes cell service, but it has limited battery life and low accuracy. Despite the name, it has little to no integration with other Smartthings products. Pros - Small and lite - Includes a year of cell (LTE) service to report location - Signal strength and location accuracy were good even when inside. - Set up and control thru app is good. - Reporting location via the button on the tracker is useful and works great. Normally taking only a minute or so to notify any linked device. - Comes with a wall charger Things to Consider - During my test I found that the battery lasted 3-4 days with 30 minute location intervals and the report only on motion battery saving featured enabled. This may not work for everyone, but seems reasonable to me. - You can set up zones and be notified when the tracker enters or leaves a zone. The notifications take 5 minutes on average and the minimum zone size is a 700ft circle. This will not work for someone trying to keep a kid in a house or a pet in a yard, but would work for keeping tabs on a kid who rides the bus or elderly person. - This device is weather resistant, not proof. Allowing it to be exposed to rain, splashed by water, or to get dirty is not a good idea. The USB port is not sealed and could easily be filled with mud or damaged by water. - This is branded as Smartthings, but does not function as a presence sensor and does not work with any automations that I could find. Example: I was hoping that you could have the door unlock for your kid when the tracker was in range. I would still recommend this product, but you really have to determine if the limitations will work for what you intend to use it for.

There really is nothing to the set up. Just download the app and connect it to your phone. Done. I do also like the fact that you get a free year of tracking. That's one of the best things about the device. But... Battery life was not great which makes it somewhat useless for long-term item tracking. They say 4-5 days - I got only 2-3 at most. 10-minute refresh on location is again not really useful if you are really trying to track something. It's a great concept, but the lack of battery life and the 10-minute refresh rate makes it not great for real-world use.

I am and have been for years a Samsung fan: TVs, Galaxy phones, Galaxy tablets, smart watch, etc. The SmartThings Tracker is the first time I’ve ever been disappointed in a Samsung product! Once the tracker is fully charged and you’ve downloaded the SmartThings app, you can begin set up. Already having the app, the pairing with my Galaxy S8+ phone was quick, and the tracking system was ready to go. The communication between you the phone and tracker is done via an AT&T connection (4G LTE) which is provided free of charge for one year ($50/yr. afterward). No set up is required, as it is ready to go as soon as you connected the Tracker to your phone. The tracker is small and very light weight. It can be carried in a pocket or, using the small enclosed lanyard connected to one long enough, it can be hung around the neck. Getting the tracker set up and ready to go is the best I can say about it. Using it is another story. First, it located my home geolocation fairly well, but it kept entering a street address that is not in my neighborhood. I entered my address into the mapping, but it kept reverting to an incorrect address. After half dozen or so times, I gave up on it showing my address. The first time the tracker was used, it showed part of its journey accurately; however, it also showed travel in directions that were opposite of the actual travel. The second time it was used it totally left out one major portion of the route. So, if you are trying to find the love one carrying the tracker, there’s no assurance you’ll find a correct location or route of travel. That pretty much renders it useless. This tracker is not up to Samsung’s usual high quality at all. Hopefully, they will come up with a much improved and reliable version for what is a great concept.

Samsung Tracker is onto something, with the device that's meant for so many things, like lost drones, can't find or remember where you parked the car and so on. if you're looking for a real-time tracker you may be left wanting. I see the potential in this but you need to know that it really is not a real-time tracker. It's close but not quite there yet. I would use this for backpacks, camera case, drones and things like that. It is well worth the money if you are trying to find something. that you value. The options are limited to three. 1). Travel Path is just plotted straight line path from point A to Point B. Doesn't show the actual path. taken. 2). Real-time Tracking, that is handy but is not really real-time. It does, however, show the actual path in minutes. not seconds. 3). GEO Fencing allows you to keep tabs on loved ones so when they say I'm going to a friend's hows you can set up the GEO Map to alert you of activity outside that zone. All in all, this is ok, but then you have to ask yourself. Will I pay $5.00 per month for this service? If my answer is yes, I want it to do more. Just my personal preference.

The Samsung - SmartThings Item Tracker - White does exactly what it claims to do. It provided me with an approximate GPS location that gave an accurate view on my phone of where the SmartThings Item Tracker was located. The first thing I did was to install the SmartThings app from Google Play. Opening up the SmartThings app gave me instructions for connecting my Samsung - SmartThings Item Tracker - White to my phone and how to program the desired functionality of the app. I live in a metropolitan area of extreme high density. The Samsung - SmartThings Item Tracker - White cannot pin point the exact numerical location of where it is located, but does give an accurate GPS location of the area of concern. The Samsung - SmartThings Item Tracker - White is a great device for keeping an eye on my most valuable possessions.

    NOT Ready for PRIMETIME

I really wanted to like this and hope things were improved over their last attempt at a tracker, but I was mistaken. Samsung is onto something here but they are FAR from perfection. This is more of a proof of concept to me rather than a product. The lack of an app or even customer features/functions is appalling. You can gain access to the device on the "SmartThings App" but then once you tap it you are taken to a website similar to Google Maps where you can see tracking history and interact with the GPS. You get basically 3 options: Check Location, Live Tracking (10mins), and Travel Path. "Live Tracking" is not live at all since you only get data once per minute. "Travel Path" just shows you plots on the maps where data points were sent. Of the 3 functions, the "Check Location" is the mainstay. It refreshes within 3 seconds and you get info you want. The "Power Save" feature is the most helpful for scenarios the tracker is idle for hours you set and you don't need to know unless it moves. Recommendations -Integration with Samsung's Find My Mobile should be a feature but is not. Even though this is a Samsung device, you cannot track it or register it to your Samsung Account. Terrible deployment of a decent product. -A dedicated app or integration with the existing Samsung ecosystem is a given and is a big miss on Samsung's part. -Add a way to download or export data to difference accounts like cloud storage (yeah Samsung you have one of those), CSV, or other GPS data formats. You have no access to the data you track but to only see it. -Add integration for other assistants like Alexa and Google. SmartThings is the only ecosystem you can use this with. I have not even tried to use the clunky IFTTT app which I have not had success with in the past to unify my home. There is no clear marking on the packaging that states compatibility with anything but SmartThings on the box. HIGH POINTS -Battery life is actually close to advertised on high frequency updates every 10 mins. I am at day 4 and the battery reading in the map says moderate. I can see this easily making it longer than a week with power save mode and lower frequency updates. -Build quality is typical Samsung. Solid ABS plastic body will take a beating and weather a few storms. IP68 rating protects from rain and the elements. You don't have to worry about this… just worry about losing it and the battery dying. -The tracking is very accurate in the scenarios I have tested. In buildings, cars, backpacks, and just about anything I could think of. It runs on GPS and LTE from the AT&T network so it is serviceable coverage. You get one year of data with your purchase then need to pay after that. -There is the option to add 2 "Safe Zones" that will automatically alert the owner of an arrival or departure using geofencing technology. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT -There is no app, no way to download data and locations sent/marked, and the overall experience is just a patch job to me. Not what I am used to from Samsung. The actual device works great outdoors/indoors and build quality is a good enough plastic. -The tracker isn't going to help much if you know it is just in the house somewhere. There is no speaker or noise that can be used to help you actually find what you are looking for. Think of this as basically a "Find My Device" app from Google but no ability to create audio alerts. -Not going to gripe about USB-C because there is absolutely no reason to have that type of port besides making things easier for their customers. -Cost for data is way too high for such a lack of features. No real value here if you are looking functionality. There is no pay as you go option. It is annually or nothing as far as I could find. VERDICT If you only want a decent tracker to know where something or someone is, this is good if you don't need a second by second live feed of data points. If you want to now when your kids come home, this is good. If you want to track where you were for some reason this is good too. Otherwise, this is an unpolished product not ready for primetime.

I purchased a new motorcycle and decided to put this inside the bike and setup zones to alert me whenever the bike left work or home. It has a 10 minute "live tracking" feature that will show you live tracking info, but at great expense to the battery. Biggest issue of the device? The battery, since I have it set to update every 30 minutes, I have to charge the battery every few days. That's not "terrible" - but it is a bit of an annoyance as I'm sort of using it as a LoJack, that I have to both hide it and also recharge every few days and hope no one catches onto what I'm doing. With that said, the size of the device and all the tech inside is impressive, but the mini-battery makes keeping it charged all the time a bit of a challenge. I will still use it to track my bike, I wish I could get more battery life out of it, but since it has to do with the limited space of the device - I'll accept it and use it, until a better solution comes along!

This may be the best product from Samsung to date. To be able to see where my kids are and even hide one in my trailer and ATV is a nice security blanket. Setup is very easy, took 15 minutes once I downloaded the needed app. Charging does not take long and lasts about 2 weeks. I love being able to see where everything is at just by opening an app. The position registers every 10 minutes, so updates are very close to live, unlike many other trackers out there that you have to be in range. Great job Samsung, you really made a solid product.

The Tracker is fantastic. It's perfect for keeping tabs on all the things that matter to you and gives me that peace of mind. My dog loves to sneak out of the house and I used to have a SmartThings Arrival sensor on his collar so I get alerted from SmartThings when he leaves the geofence but it does not tell me where he is out of the house. Now, with the SmartThings Tracker, I can get alerts when he sneaks out and have his exact location. Also, it's great that it is water resistant and dust proof.

This is such a simple device... Why didn't they think of this before? Samsung nailed it with the simplistic form factor of this SmartThing... Small enough to go into the small pocket on jeans of a child/tween where it wont irritate them, but also big enough not to get lost easily. My wife carries it in her purse to keep it from being lost. Helps locate it throughout the house even!

    1. The smallest warning sone is 700 feet. Thus if using it for a child or pet, you won't get a warning until they are at least 2 1/2 football fields away from your home. 2. You can get some features if use the classic smartthings app. You can get other features if you use the new smartthings app. But you can't get all features by just one or the other. 3. Despite working with Samsung tech support, we could not get the old app to recognize the device, so those features only available through the classic app were not available (like text messages when it leaves the zone.) 4. There is no way to save the history of the track to send to others to help locate the missing person or pet or thing. 5. Using the new app to track the movement used up 40% of my S7 battery life in just 30 minutes. And the only notifications available with the new device are status bar notifications. 6. There is no way to securely attach the device to a dog's collar. other than letting it hang down from the flimsy strap, meaning a wandering dog and the device would probably soon be separated. My advice is to wait for version 2 of the smartthings tracker

Now anyone can put tracking devices (similar to other anti-theft trackers and such) either inside of a vehicle (such as plugged into an interior "cigarette lighter" USB charger), or another use might be if charged enough in advance, when shipping a package, perhaps you could slip it inside of the package and follow the "real" path it takes (not sure how that would work in reality, or if it is legal, but it would be on your own packages so why not). Mine came with one year of free mobile data service connected to the device, which means for at least a year without additional spending, I can track mine down anywhere. The only catch is I might imagine if someone else found it, they could re-pair it with their own device/account perhaps (not sure if that is possible) and maybe I'd lose access to it's data (this is just my imagination, not actual testing).

so I bought 2 of these, one for my car and one to keep in my sons backpack to keep an eye on him when he goes from school to daycare. the one in my car I keep connected to the usb power source so it can charge when my car is on but it keeps disconnecting. I have to go push the button on it to reconnect it which is annoying. I just had to do the same with my son's which I charge every weekend. it disconnected from the system after I unplugged it from charger. my main worry is that these aren't 100% reliable if I need to count on them to find my car or my son. last thing I need to worry about is a tracker that's constantly going down each week to where I physically need to turn it off and on. the battery power will last you a whole week as long as you set the tracking refresh time to update every 3-5 hours and go into power save mode at night. I guess if you need a backup tracker to keep in your laptop bag or purse or luggage before a trip so you don't loose them then this is perfect. BUT for items that you want to track without having to physically reset it often then this is not for you, like tracking your car.

At first I liked the idea of being able to track my pet but the device was too big. Also the setup it was complicated and time consuming. Finally I used it in my kids backpack and I had to keep pressing the track now option to get the history of where my child was and by the end of the day the battery was low. Really it is not worth it based on the poor battery life alone. If you cannot track the device for at least a week or more than what is the point if you have another device to charge in 2018?
