Even though the last several decades have put out a ton of disaster movies, the same familiar themes of West Coast, shifting plates, and rescuing loved ones still attracts so-called disaster movie fans. Local paper "movie experts" (sarcastic hum-buggers) moaned about another disaster movie and certain disappointment for those not heading their plea and taking in the movie. Well, it is a better than average disaster movie that has all of the elements Hollywood expert types despise- similar plot, predictability, and on and on. Yes, the good guy came to the rescue and things were predictable, but also enjoyable. The Rock continues to cash in on a nice career in the movies. He is likable, heroic, and plays the common man theme very well.

"It was definitely a missed opportunity to not title this film ‘The Rock v. Earthquakes‘, even if it didn’t feature our main hero jumping solo out of an airplane and giving the natural disaster his iconic ‘People’s Elbow’, while yelling “If you smell what the Rock is cooking”, but I digress. What I like most about ‘San Andreas‘ is that it knows exactly what kind of movie it wants to be and commits one billion percent to it. It knows that it wants to be full of action and peril with at least three sides of cheese, complete with funny one liners, fast close up pans of The Rock looking at the destruction, and even wind blown American flag hanging ever so slightly on the damaged rubble."

San Andreas was an exciting thrill ride led by a great action movie star (Dwayne Johnson). If you like disaster movies, you'll like this one. If you like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson movies, you'll like this one. If you like them both...you'll love this movie. Disaster movies can go many different directions, sometimes to the extreme making them hard to watch. San Andreas does a good (mostly) of keeping it real and keeping it fun.

    A Satisfying Rollercoaster Ride

The story is fun and takes off quickly. An unexpected but welcome human interest element is the fact that the estranged family members at the center of the story actually do care for each other, as opposed to the cynical sense of family strife that most movies tend to portray. When I watch a 3D movie, I like for things to jump out of the screen, rather than merely showing depth into the screen. In that respect, the 3D is pretty good, (and so is the sound.) It was surprisingly difficult to buy this film on sale so I was pleased when I found it.

This is a vividly-told epic with realism and fantastic CGI that is supported by superb acting, cinematography and it is accompanied by a well-crafted soundtrack. It’s all put together into Classically told saga that is pure entertainment that is a memorable view of a story of personal survival intermixed with every-day life of a failed marriage and its’ resurrection. Get ready to experience an up-close-and personal mega 9.6+ Rector Scale earthquake that’s as-real-as-it-gets! The film is an attention-holder and a huge action-disaster flick that you will not forget – you will view it more than just once.

It's no surprise with a natural disaster film that there are going to be many action packed scenes, but this one has really good timing. It builds up suspense but the timing also lends to increasing the anxiety of the viewer, even if you think you know what's going to happen. As usual, these types of film make you appreciate what you have, especially your relationships. Dwayne Johnson turns in a solid performance and his determination as a character is tangible and holds the film together. You'll take away a "Don't give up, beat the odds!" attitude from watching the film.

The Rock Saves the World Again

Actually, just his family. I always enjoy this genre; once again, we are about to get beachfront property in Nevada, but the Rock has to save his family as they step into every place that displays the greatest danger. What I found interesting was the former Mr Fantastic as the wealthy, cowardly fiancé to the almost ex-wife, leaving his future step daughter to be crushed in the underground garage. {First, the remake of FF, now this. How much could he take?} When you are looking for a campy movie, this is what we call a hoot.

My Significant Other and I started out our one-year anniversary, last Saturday, May 30, 2015, attending this film. Although I am not really much of a Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson fan, his performance in this flick turned out to be much better than I anticipated by not being too 'over-the-top'. Visually stunning, this movie, albeit somewhat of a reality stretch (aren't most films?), similar to today’s real life predictions, detailed what unfortunately could lie ahead, of an unknown scale, for the future of the west coast.

Big Budget Disaster Action Movie in 3D!

First of all, this is a disaster movie with a fairly good story line. It has very realistic effects and thrilling action. To get the full experience, you should watch this in 3D and a good theater sound system. It's too bad that (as of this review) 3D is out. No more 3D TV is manufactured (except Sony Z9D in its 3rd year). If you are a 3D fan like me, get all the 3D Blu-ray discs you can. A large portion is still available online and mostly are imported from Europe. No one knows when the next 3D craze will be.

I am a sucker for disaster movies. The bigger and badder the disaster the better. Growing up in California hearing about the San Andreas fault line and the BIG ONE plus experiencing several earthquakes this was a must see. It did not disappoint. Filled with the things one would expect with these types of movies but what stood out was the technology of special effects presented earthquake images not seen before in movies. Of course, Dwayne Johnson brought his charm and action to keep action fans satisfied. I highly recommend this movie.

    Terrific Disaster Movie

I like Dwayne Johnson; I love action/adventure movies with a touch of humor, the movie was a non-stop trip from "everything is fine" to "OMG--we're all going to die!" and back to "it's okay again." Admittedly, some of the special effects (which were actually outstanding) probably wouldn't work, but who cares? They just make it better. And since "The Big One" is someday going to hit, and since I'm from S. California, it's always interesting to see how people think it will happen. (Probably wouldn't turn out quite like that.)

My family had watched the movie in the theaters and thoroughly enjoyed it. Before seeing the movie myself, I thought it would be "unrealistic" (beyond the fact that most of the action in natural disaster movies probably would not happen so precisely.) Well, I was wrong. I absolutely enjoyed the action and watching Dwayne Johnson (who unfortunately did not take off his shirt). If you are a fan of Dante's Peak, Volcano, 2012, Day After Tomorrow, you should like this quake-filled movie including all the over the top action.

Story - Meh. Destruction - YES

Let me get this out of the way: The story is your basic love\hate\heroes never die type thing which is kinda boring BUT the visuals in the movie definitely make it worth the watch. I saw this movie in theaters and on the small screen, both times I loved the destruction. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson puts on a good show, but the rest of the cast is a throw away. There are cheesy parts in the movie (Especially after the hoover dam part) but all in all I enjoyed the experience. 7\10
