A film that is better than the film it is about.

My wife and I are both Disney fans. While Mary Poppins has charmed children of all ages, it isn't one of our favorite films so a movie about the making of Mary Poppins had a long way to go to hold our attention. Saving Mr. Banks did that very well.
I had no idea the back story of how Disney's Mary Poppins came to be was so fascinating. There's always something special about a film that depicts an actual event. Tom Hanks plays a believable Walt Disney and the film seems to portray him as the shrewd businessman and visionary he is often remembered for being. He was on a personal mission to make that film and nothing was going to stop him - even the obstinate author of the book and copyright owner of the characters.
Nothing special about the disc. As with most Blu-ray discs it looks great and sounds great, but no 3D or Dolby Atmos, most likely because they wouldn't add much to this storytelling.
Be sure to watch the credits. They put a terrific bow on the package of this story!

This is not a movie about the making of Mary Poppins, it is a movie about how Mary Poppins was able to be made. As a dramatization, it is not 100% historically accurate, but you get a sense why PL Travers was being such a stickler for detail over her creation. Be warned, this is not a happy Disney movie, but a peak behind the curtain. While kids can certainly watch the movie, they will probably be bored.
Both Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson give stellar performances. It is obvious that they both did their homework on the mannerisms and speech patterns of their subjects. Hanks, unfortunately, still sounds like himself and not Walt Disney, but that is the only flaw I found. All of the rest of the cast, similarly, give wonderful performances.

How Disney got "Mary Poppins" on the Screen

It takes a good hour into this movie before you start to really get a feeling as to what the driving force was behind P.L.Travers ( portrayed by Emma Thompson ), and you finally get some sympathy for the author and her tragic childhood in Australia. Until then, you keep asking yourself why Walt Disney ( portrayed by Tom Hanks ) would have put up with so much of her attitude...she treats every one at Disney studios as if they were second class citizens, and for a woman who demanded so much of others, she has little regard for anyone's feelings but her own. But when Disney himself finally discovers the connection between the " Mr. Banks " of the title and the author herself, it's a testament to Thompson's performance that the viewer actually finds themselves understanding, if not entirely excusing her behavior....over all, a good movie about the creative process, and how certain characters can be so ingrained into their creator's very essence.

The DIsney organization advised the BBC production team, but the British folks made their own artistic choices in this parable based on the P. L. Travers and Walt Disney encounters that led to the movie "Mary Poppins". Neither had comfortable childhoods. Both triumphed over personal pain and produced art enchanting millions.
The script smooths over Travers' real reaction to the Disnification of her archly mystical Edwardian nanny. However, her clashes and reconciliations with Walt and his people give Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks wondrously deep waters to swim in. The end sound track over the titles contains authentic recordings of Travers in fully cry demanding and debating with Disney's creative folks.
An ultimately satisfying meditation on how our lives become a statement about the world.

A great movie with a plot based loosely on the true story of Walt Disney's mission to obtain the movie rights P.L. Travers "Mary Poppins." With two veteran actors (Hanks and Thomson) playing the leads, the movie is good on it's own merits, but if you are a fan of Disney, the man or the company, this movie is especially good for you. Very authentic in sets, costumes and props, with exact recreations of Walt's offices, this is a great film visually and emotionally. This is a solid "rent" for anyone who enjoys a good "based on a true story" movie, but a "must buy" for the Disney fan!

If you have seen Mary Poppins (and who hasn't?) you must see this movie. It is the incredible story of Walt Disney and his team convincing PL Travers to let them make her book into a Disney movie. The acting is superb from the entire cast but IMHO Tom Hanks steals the show. He really makes you feel you are seeing the real Walt Disney.
The movie is for ages 12+ not for any other reason that the intellectual ability to understand the true plot and dynamics are not typically present in a child under age 12.

As an avid fan of classical Disney films and "Mary Poppins", and as a person who has worked on adapting original written works to a performance medium, I connected with this wonderful film. It was entertaining and interesting to see how scenes from the Disney classic came to be and the original historical moments that inspired them. Additionally, this blu-ray comes with a digital copy, so I'm able to watch this film through my Vudu app on my PS3 and smartphone. HIGHLY recommended.

For any true DISNEY FAN this is a MUST SEE and OWN dvd! I felt that TOM HANKS should have won the Oscar for this role. He was simply outstanding, or as us disneygeeks would say, he was "SUPERCALIFRAGALISTICEXPALIDOCIOUS"!!!! I cant wait to watch this one again! I learned so much about HOW Disney made made movies back then and I truly appreciate his genius! A+
PS - DONT spank me for any spelling errors in my "SUPER" word above, my spell check couldn't even figure it out. but you get the point! :~)

A touching docudrama on "Mary Poppins" origin

While not a true documentary, this is a pretty close docudrama depiction of the background to PL Travers's "Mary Poppins". As the story shifts through different time periods, we see the author's childhood & the real-life events that inspired the character, while also watching the time that Walt Disney spent trying to convince Travers to grant him movie rights to the story.
It is a heavy emotional movie, well-acted by all the principles involved.

This movie tells a great behind the scenes account of the struggle between Travers, the author of the Mary Poppins books, and Disney, who was determined to create a sugary and delightful concoction of a movie based on the stories told in the books. Great performances all around and a bittersweet and funny real life story. The Best Buy price was very competitive and it was easy to find amongst the store's great variety of Blu Rays and DVD's.

Saving Mr. Banks is a dual narrative portrait of the author of Mary Poppins and the creative team at Walt Disney that worked to bring it to the big screen. In one thread (1961) we have the curmudgeonly author behaving like a stark raving... well, curmudgeon as she tries to exert control over the creative process. In the other thread (1906, Australia) we unwind the story of her grim childhood that makes her a curmudgeon in the first place.

So popular and entertaining was this movie with my husband and I, it was played throughout the month as the "movie of the month. I mean, who doesn't love Tom Hanks...who I might add did a simply splendid job as Walt Disney. And we simply can't say enough about Emma Thompson who stole the show. Emma Thompson was an entertaining marvel to watch. Probably not much of a kids movie as it had an adult plot and storyline.

Centered on the development of the 1964 Walt Disney Studios film Mary Poppins, the film stars Emma Thompson as author P. L. Travers and Tom Hanks as filmmaker Walt Disney, with supporting performances from Colin Farrell, Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman, Bradley Whitford, Ruth Wilson, B. J. Novak, Rachel Griffiths, and Kathy Baker. Named after the father in Travers' story, the film depicts the author's fortnight-long briefing in 1961 Los Angeles as she is pursued by Disney, in his attempts to obtain the screen rights to her novels.[

What a great movie, based on a true story and FINALLY a movie where someone plays Walt Disney. Any true Disney fan needs to see this movie, it's funny and yet has a deep meaning to it. It has an emotional grasp that will capture your heart. The extras and features are a great bonus, wish there was more of them but still great! If you have already seen this movie, why haven't you bought it yet??

The plot gives the behind the scenes creation of the movie "Mary Poppins," with Tom Hanks portraying Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as author, P. L. Travers. The story looks into the background of the life of the author and how it led her to write the book with its eccentric characters. This movie hits the emotions - happy, sad, funny, angry and several more. I loved every minute of this movie.

The movie was a very entertaining look into how and why the movie Mary Poppins was made. I'm sure there was some fictionalization, but my whole family really enjoyed it. Tom Hanks was very convincing as Walt Disney, even going so far as to adopt disney's mannerisms and speech patterns that I remember from the Disney tv shows when I was a kid. I recommend this movie to everyone!
