Installation (drive cloning) was incredibly simple
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this as a replacement for a dying OEM Seagate 400GB drive in a 4 year old desktop. (Vista began cranking out "imminent failure" messages for the old drive about every 20 minutes -- all mechanical tests were fine however it showed a high number of bad and/or unstable sectors. At least I had time to decide on my path forward and install a replacement drive before it gave up entirely.) The best surprise in installing this new drive was how easy it was to clone the old drive onto the new drive, using the Seagate supplied utility -- once the new drive was bolted in, the cloning and start up process was nearly automatic (took about an hour for physical installation [including an over-due cleaning inside] and then about 2.5 hours for the cloning, which included moving about 275GB of data). I've had it running for about a month now -- it's very quiet and so far performs very well. A side benefit is booting up Vista now takes less than half the time -- which I attribute to the problems cropping up on the old drive. Data loss from the old drive was never a concern as I diligently back up to two external drives -- having had to pay for data recovery for a drive that went bad years ago I have the need for good data backup practices indelibly etched in my brain (and wallet).

Excellent for the $55 sales price
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Hard to evaluate for speed on my flaky Win7(64) system that locks up for up to a minute at times, but I did manage to get a 1.3GB/s write and 1 GB/s read out of it on a shorter test (drops to a tenth of that when I get a lockup/timeout). Since the floods in SE Asia, drive prices are back up so high that this is gonna be the best buy for me for the next year or two by the looks of it. I just got back my replacement external Seagate 1TB drive that was giving my problems, so I'll have an exact size external backup to use for it. That being said, Acronis Drive Monitor is showing the drive at 85% due to degradation in the 'End-to-end error' value of 85 with a threshold of 99 (raw value has gone from 9 to 15). Not sure if this is legit or due to my other drive timeout issue, but will have to do something if it gets worse. The returned external drive seems to have the same write/read speed on USB 2 as the internal drive though.

Excellent Hard Drive Replacement in My iMac
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this drive as an upgrade to my iMac 8,1. The drive is whisper quiet. I've had no issues with it and wouldn't hesitate to buy another when it's time to upgrade a couple of my other Macs.

Great drive
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this drive to add to a Windows Home Server. I tested the drive with my desktop computer to make sure there were no problems with it before adding to server. Drive tested fine. The CD that comes with the drive is not bootable, but a quick download of SeaTools for DOS from Seagate's website and I had a bootable diagnostic floppy image. Check Seagate's website, this drive does NOT require a firmware update. I have since added it to the server and have had no problems at all. I've always used W****** D****** drives in the past, but after having 3 drives fail in the last 8 months, decided to try something else. All 3 that died were less than 2 years old, but WD only gives you a 1 year warranty (that might have changed recently, but that doesn't help me now), this drive has a five year warranty. All in all, I'm very happy with this drive and would happily recommend it to anyone.

Working great so far
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I needed to add a second hard drive to my computer, so I bought this one. I've been using it for video recording and it works just as well as the hard drive that came with my machine. Transferring large files between the two can be slow, but it hasn't been a big issue. The only thing I didn't like was the terrible software that came with it-- I'm reasonably tech-savvy, but I spent at least ten minutes just trying to figure out how to get to the install options. The booklet was a little too vague for my taste when it came to installing the drive, but I managed to get it working without too much trouble. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase.

works like a charm.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had to replace my hard drive in my imac. Installation wasn't that bad. So far the hard drive is quiet and fairly fast. I got it at a decent price. All in all, I got a good deal on a good product. I would recommend this product.

Perfect for what i need
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.i bought this hdd for storage of movie files.. and it works great. i probably would'nt recommend putting your OS on it because these are made kinda cheap and would burn out in a year or so. but once again using it just for storage is what this thing is best for and the price is great. now i installed this in my emachines which was primarily set up for IDE hardware but i found 4 sata inputs on my motherboard and connected this bad boy up in no time. the only problem was i had to go into my bios set up screen (F2 @ startup) and change the order in which the hard drives boot..because my computer wanted to boot this harddrive first and not my other hard drive which has my OS on it...nothing big..only took a couple miinutes. now i get to store my movie collection as if it's "on demand"

Nice quiet drive
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I want to say that the last Seagate drive I had was a 320gb,it chirped occasionally when i bought it and it gave up the ghost after 3 years (not a complete failure since i was able to retrieve my data), but you get the idea. Hard drives come from the factory defective all the time and it really doesn't matter who the manufacturer is .Hard drives are the most fragile part of the pc, sometimes they are banged up when shipped to the retailer and then banged up again by the stock boy....etc. Its really up to you to know if your drive is a good one by testing it first, if it chirps or makes noise then you know there will likely be problems in the near future so you should back up your data and return it. The good thing about buying it at bestbuy is that if it fails you can take it back to the store and swap it instead of RMAing it through other online computer parts dealers and having to pay the shipping twice or three times. Just my 2 cents....

Great freakin' hard drive
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my third Seagate hard drive purchase and you can't go wrong for the price and reliability. I added this internal drive (now have 5 installed) so I could use this as my primary drive. The clone process worked flawlessly and I was up and running in about 4 hours after transferring about 680 gigs of files using the included software, including my operating system (Windows 7). I also like the fact that the SATA cable was included in the box; not the case with Western Digital.

BEST ONE ON THE MARKET!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I BOUGHT THE WESTERN DIGITAL 1 TB 32 CATCH 3.0GPS 7200 RPM HARD DRIVE. THINKING THAT THE RATTING CANT LIE. INSTALLED IT AND AS I USED IT MORE AND MORE I NOTICED THE NOSE LEVEL WAS EXTREMELY HIGH. ITS NOT ULTRA QUIET. THEN I RETURNED IT AND ORDERED A 1 TB 64 CATCH 6.0 GPS HARD RIVE SAME MANUFACTURER. IT WAS EVEN NOSIER AND WAS NOT STABLE. IT WAS DEFECTIVE RETURNED IT TO NEW EGG..... I BOUGHT THIS ONE TAKING A RISK AND IT HAS PROVEN ME WRONG.. DON'T LOOK AT THE RATINGS THIS IS A STABLE AND VERY QUIET HARD DRIVE. IF YOU NEED A REPLACEMENT OR A NEW HARD DRIVE THIS WOULD BE MY RECOMMENDATION. IT HAS WORKED FOR ME FOR PAST WEEK WITHOUT PROBLEMS AND MANY PEOPLE USE THIS BRAND AND SAY IT LASTS. I HOPE IT HELPS ALL YOUR BUYERS.

Nice hard drive for a win7/8 comp
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Seagate makes some nice drives, Less failures then the cheaper brands at least for me. Install is easy as Sata cables are a snap to install and the cages on my new PC are very simple to install into.

Hard Drive brought new life to a dead Tivo
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This hard drive does what it supposed to, as fast as it is supposed to, as easy as it is supposed to. That does not make it great, but it makes it a workable solution that can be relied upon. I would buy it again but I still think it is a bit expensive as far as hard drives go.

Wait For HDD Prices To Come Back Down
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Anyone who is looking for a new hard drive and can wait 6 months or so; I would highly recommend you wait for HDD prices to come back down. For those who don't follow tech news, HDD prices sky-rocketed back in late fall/winter due to plants being shutdown from severe flooding in Thailand & SE Asia. I managed to buy this drive on sale at $65 back in early October right before the prices started to go up. Comparing prices back then and in the summer, current prices are double what they once were. So again, if you can wait...wait.

Good drive for price.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought and installed four in May and zero failures thus far. Nice and quiet in eSATAII box, no temp problems. 5-year warranty is worth an extra $10-$20, IMO--especially on a 1TB drive.

Big Hard drive
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Had a little trouble during set up trying to figure out written instructions. They didn't seem to clear but I got online and was checking back through other reviews and found out how to set it up. From there it took a few hours to format. Transfering information from my external HD took some time also as it was pretty full, but I went to bed and let it do all the work. It has only been a few weeks but it is quiet and runs smoothly and cool as I haven't seen an increase in my computers temperature. At this point I would buy more if I needed the additional space, especially now that I know how to set it up!
