I bought these to replace a set of Sony RF 970R headphones that I loved. I was looking for more comfort, better sound, and significantly better range. I was willing to pay up to $400 to get what I wanted. Comfort: The Sonys were comfortable but as they got older the headband (which controlled the power) got looser and less comfortable. The Sennheiser was significantly more comfortable on the head, and about equal in comfort around the ears. ★★★★ Sound: When comparing a set of $350 (on sale) headphones to a pair of $80 headphones several years old you would expect the Sennheiser to win hands down. In this case the sound quality was virtually equal. I am a retired professional musician and I understand sound. My Wired headphones are Yamaha Studio headphones which blow the Sennheiser 185s away (but the are wired). When you take price into consideration you can't rate this sound better than ★★ Range: This was the big topic for me. I was making an attempt to replace both my Sony headphones, but I also my Yamaha Studio headphones. When I listen to music while my wife and daughter sleep I use my Yahama headphones to go all over the house. They are wired so I have this long cord that goes from my iPod to my heads, or I'm tethered to my computer or stereo. The advertised range was up to 330' so I figured I would get 220 feet (60% of advertised). From my bedroom to the kitchen is 60' with no solid walls. The Sennheiser makes it into the living room 30' and the space between the living room and kitchen is open (no walls) and I get broken sound with no consistent sound for more than 3-5 seconds. For this I rate the 185s a ★. In the bedroom to listen to TV I rate them a solid ★★★★. The Sony RF970R was also a ★★★★ but cost ¼ the price. My decision now is do I take them back and buy another set of Sony headphones for $100 or keep the Sennheiser for $352? Overall, I found these very disappointing for the price.
