Shark designs another winner

I’ll start by saying that I am a big fan of Shark products. From small kitchen appliances, to floor care products, to air purifiers, we use them all in our family and they have never failed us. When I saw that Shark were releasing a new compact air purifier that doesn’t require a filter change, I was immediately intrigued. As an owner of several air purifiers, mostly due to the inevitable summer wildfires out West, I feel like you can never have too many unless of course, you already have one in every room of the house.
We are using the new Shark NeverChange air purifier in our bedroom, which is on the smaller side, and it performs as expected. We currently don’t leave it on 24/7, but only turn it on when someone is home. Using this method, I have noticed that the Shark, when powered on for the first time after work, will show that the air quality isn’t clean and will start working right away. In our 15x17 bedroom, it will take the compact Shark about 10-20 minutes to clean the room and enter idle mode. This of course depends on just how dirty, or smoky the air is, and how many people are in the room. Thankfully at this time of year, the smoke isn’t as bad. I am assuming we will keep it running 24/7 in the spring and summer months.
Some things I appreciate about this unit, and in no particular order, are the fact that it looks like a little droid unit sitting on the table and being a science fiction fan, I like that. The styling and build quality are top notch, as is the case with all of our Shark products. I also really appreciate the fact that you can dim, or turn off the front panel lighting for dark environments, such as a kids room, or nursery. It is light and very portable, making it easy to move from room to room if needed. It is relatively quiet when cleaning dirty air, but completely whisper quiet once it is idling. Since the unit includes Hepa filtration, both odors and smoke are sucked up and left inside the unit like the ghost trap from Ghostbusters, ejecting only clean, fresh, breathable, purified air. There is even a little air freshener puck on top of the unit with a dial to adjust how much scent you want released into the room if you choose. The scent is pleasant and should be a great feature to have if and when the wild fires begin. Initial setup was a breeze. You peel off a few tape pieces, remove the plastic from the filter and press the power button. It took me less than five minutes to get up and running from being inside the factory sealed box.
While I have no idea what NeverChange actually means with respect to the filter itself, I am hoping that this little thing can go a really long time without the need for replacement filters. The main filter inside the unit looks very similar to other air purifier filters I have changed in the past, so I can only assume that this one will indeed need to be replaced at some point. Only time will tell! The slide out thin filter on the side captures larger particles like pet hair. This filter can easily be removed and cleaned periodically which is another bonus feature.
If you have a smaller sized office, bedroom, or nursery, I would highly consider the Shark NeverChange Compact air purifier. If you need to cover more space, they also offer this same unit in larger sizes.
Breathe well!

powerful air cleaner, but "never" is a strong word

This isn’t my first time around with a shark air filter, so I was familiar with a lot of the controls and settings coming into it. What I wasn’t familiar with was the “never change” (pronounced “every 5 years”) filter. I love the idea of changing filters less often, as I tend to change my air filters more based on months than years, but I’m still not sold this filter will last the claimed 5 years. But we’ll get into that.
Overall, I’ve been enjoying this air filter and adding it to my fleet of filters throughout my house has brought positives and negatives, some of which may not matter to your particular situation, but I’ll try to explain everything the best I can.
The set up was easy, the controls are intuitive, and the noise is…relatively low. However the auto mode is a little off and needs more testing and the optional air scent boost doesn’t clean the air and is personally not something I like or will continue to use.
That said, the filter has been operating as advertised, it’s helping clean a room that is probably too big for it, and it claims a lot of useful features in a manageable price range. I would still recommend this air filter and will probably continue to use Shark filters.
So let’s get into the details. Right off the bat, I just want to say my take on the “never change” name and claims. First, I don’t love calling it never change then adding fine print that says it only needs to change every 5 years. Never is not 5 years, but also “never” is impossible for an air filter with today's technology. So I doubt too many people out there will think they can never change this filter. I think the more sad reality is that most people will simply throw away and buy a new one in 5 years or less and so Shark assumes most won’t need a filter. I guess I’m just crazy like that and tend to keep products for as long as I can. All that said, I also don’t believe 5 years is accurate. They do include the specific situation that has to be in play for their five year claim to come true, and it’s just a bunch of technical jargon, but I think in a normal use house, you’re looking at 1 to 2 years. BUT that is just a guess, I have NO science or testing to back that, so time will tell. Unfortunately, I can’t wait 5 years to write this review, so this is based on a week of use. The filter doesn’t look much different than other filters I have that need to be replaced every few months, so who knows. The removable and washable pre-filter probably has a role in helping the main filter last longer, so I assume the better you do cleaning the prefilter, the better the main filter life will be. The unit does seem to have a pre-filter status info, but it also always say “clean filter” so I think the wording could be better here. There’s a percentage reading, that I assume is how clean it is because out of the box it said, “clean filter - 100%”. Again, poor wording. I thought the filter needed to be cleaned.
While we’re talking about the filter though, let’s get into unboxing and setup. The filter comes wrapped in a sealed plastic bag but is stored inside the unit. This would obviously be bad if you plugged it in and tried to use it, so Shark made sure even the least attention giving user will not miss it, they put a huge yellow sticker over the LED panel telling you to remove the filter from the bag first. (see photo) I think this is a great idea as we move closer and closer to no instructions and companies just assuming we can figure it out (sadly).
Once I got the unit up and running, which was as easy as opening and installing the filter and plugging it in, I was ready to see how well it cleans the air. And boy did I have a great time to start testing. I had just made a pizza in the oven, and you know when that chunk of sausage takes a wad of cheese with it and lands on the bottom of the oven until it turns to charcoal dust? Yeah, that just happened. The house was full of hazy burnt cheese clouds and smelled bad. The new air filter turned on and immediately showed our air quality as low. About as low as it can probably show. I set it to auto and obviously it cranked it up right away and continued to work most of the night. Mind you, this was in my office which is down wind of the kitchen. For a rather small office space, the filter did manage to clean the air pretty quickly and eventually got the air quality up to 100%. Although I am a little unsold on how accurate that reading is. The sniff test didn’t show the same results. I was outside a bit and when I came back in, the air still smelled stale and still pretty clearly like something burned in the kitchen, but the filter said 100% and was in eco mode. So I guess it’s hit or miss, but if it really bothers you, you could just manually set the speed higher until the sniff test passes too.
Either way, the air is still cleaner than it was without the air filter. And once I moved it to a larger open concept area of the house, I was surprised to see it still was able to keep up and clean the air to 100%. I do have a second air filter in that area working the other side of the room, so combined they technically can cover that square footage, but I think the Shark can handle it’s own, albeit probably needing to run a bit more than in a smaller room.
The noise isn’t great on this unit though. It is quiet by the definition of low decibels, but the reality is the low speed motor has a very unpleasant hum to it. It’s hard to explain, but it’s a higher frequency motor sound that is mostly masked by the faster fan speeds of the higher settings, but at low it’s all I can hear. So it is quiet, but the noise is not pleasant in my opinion. When it’s running at higher speeds it sounds more like a standard fan noise, quite, but noticeable, and as far as sleeping with it running, we couldn’t leave it on auto because the constant fan speed changes would wake us up. If we set it to low all night it was fine, as we got used to it and when we were asleep, it wasn’t waking us up. But the auto mode would jump to high and that sudden change in sound woke me up a lot. I am a light sleeper, but my wife sleeps heavier and said it still woke her up a few times but also said after a few nights, she’d probably be ok. So your experience may vary.
The added “scent boost” thing is maybe something others will like, but personally I don’t like the smell at all, it’s very artificial, and I felt like it was the equivalent of spraying an air freshener in the room. It didn’t seem to neutralize the air or make it cleaner, it just felt like a scent cover up. Again, others may have different experiences or opinions, so I’m not knocking stars for that kind of stuff, but I know I won’t be buying more of those scent cans to use once the included one is gone. Thankfully it is not necessary to have to make the filter work.
Like I said though, OVERALL I am really liking this filter and I’m happy to have it as part of my air cleaning crew. The screen is easy to read and understand, the buttons are user friendly and the operation is pretty straight forward. I will be happy if the filter lasts over 1.5 years, but anything that’s talking years instead of months is a plus. I think with good product management on my part, including cleaning the pre-filter regularly, this air filter should last for a very long time.

This Shark air purifier may be small in size, but it seems to be working like a big air purifier in the 700 sq. ft. area that it is in. Within a day of it running (very quietly), it has managed to clear away the dust particles in the air that were brought up during furniture moving. It has been worth the money so far.

I have used this purifier in my bedroom now for a couple of weeks, and the air quality is noticeably better. It is very quiet on the lower fan settings, and the auto setting seems to adjust well.

At first, I wasn't sure it was working. But, I lit and blew out a match near it and the air quality indicator dropped like a rocket. Just what I was hoping for! It's insanely quiet. We left it in Eco mode and it only comes on when it detects a need.

The air in the bedroom feels nicer and I dont have as hard of a time sleeping well. The only thing is that when it kicks into high gear it tends to be a bit loud, but when the air is relatively clean its fairly quiet.

I love this air purifier. It doesn’t produce ozone (no ionizer), has a HEPA filter, has an digital indicator that displays the air quality, and a night mode that totally disables the digital lights (for those of us who don’t like light in our room while we sleep). It’s not too noisy on the high mode and is almost silent on the low mode (which is all I need to run it on to keep the room at 100.%). A great purchase!

After using several air purifiers over the years, the Shark - NeverChange Compact Pro has proven to be a worthwhile investment for our bedroom. Initially, I opted for lower-cost air purifiers, but I soon realized that manufacturers often compensate for the low upfront price by charging high replacement filter costs. My previous purifier required $40 filter replacements every three months, which quickly became unsustainable. Additionally, the company eventually discontinued filter production for that model, leaving us without replacement options.
The NeverChange Compact Pro advertises a filter lifespan of up to five years. While I cannot yet verify this claim, it has performed well so far, offering consistent air purification and the reassurance that we won't need to purchase new filters every few months. If you're considering more affordable air purifiers, I highly recommend reviewing filter longevity to ensure cost-effectiveness. Ultimately, this model provides a much better long-term value compared to others.

Number one I like that it is a shark product. I like the creative style of this air purifier no filter change idea. I like that filters out spores dust, mites, and other micro bowl things that float in the air. I noticed that my shark air purifier Senses, heat and stain and odors. I like that the indicator light can be turned down in three levels. My only dislike is the noise level when you turn the fan speed up. Other than that, it’s a great product.
