Greetings again from the darkness. Great literature seldom makes for great cinema. The mediums are vastly different. However great literature, in the right hands, can make for very entertaining cinema. Such is the case with Guy Ritchie's interpretation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's greatest character. Mr. Ritchie provides us with quite a departure from the Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce "Holmes and Watson". Here we get dazzling special effects and near super-human feats and stunts. Another twist is that this Holmes here is no meticulous, fastidious bore in real life. In fact, he lives more like a frat boy or rock star - replete with trashed room and bouts of isolation. What is not missing is Holmes' world class attention to detail. The story here is multi-layered and actually very interesting, if not a bit high-minded and high-concept. The still-under-construction Tower Bridge plays a role in the film and the bleakness and gray of London is captured perfectly. Of course, I won't reveal any details of the story other than to say the "good" guys are out to get a real bad guy here ... wonderfully played by the always solid Mark Strong, who may or may not be dead. That always makes for an interesting case! Support from Rachel McAdams and Eddie Marsan are fine, but Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law are the real stars as Holmes and Watson. As odd as it seems, they really do have a buddy factor that works well on screen. Downey's physicality has always set him apart from many contemporary actors ... he moves like a dancer and fights like a champion. Jude Law is often too pretty-boy for me, but he really does a nice job of capturing the reluctant sidekick with complimentary skills. This is a BIG movie! It is made to be a rollicking good time with tons of popcorn munched. Smaller kids will not be able to follow the story, but anyone who has read a Holmes story (and isn't against a little artistic license) should see the film. It is extremely entertaining and fun to watch.

I enjoy directors that take material and tell it faithfully, but in a modern way. This cast delivers. A fun movie.

Robert Downey Jr and Jude law bring a modern day version of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. While the movie strays from canonical Sherlock Holmes, it does bring the combination of an action adventure movie with the twists and turns of a good mystery along with some comedy. The movie has something for everyone and is entertaining from beginning to end.

I love this movie. Robert Downey Jr. plays an excellent revision of Sherlock and Jude Law an excellent revision of Dr. Watson. I love that it brought much more action into a mystery genre without oversimplifying the plot and making the twists and turns too easy. If you like Sherlock from the BBC, Downey's Sherlock keeps that same arrogance that Cumberbatch's has down so well. If you haven't seen it, you simply must!

It may be called "Sherlock Homes," but it is not like the old traditional Sherlock Homes, but overall it is good movie. I'm not a big fan of movies using old names and being different from the original book or movie/series, but still a pretty good movie for the most part. Movie should not be shown to kids under 13, like the rating suggest. Also look into the second movie if you enjoy this one. Both are pretty good movies.

Robert Downey Jr. certainly shines as the great literary detective in terms of both intelligence and eccentricity. Along with a supporting cast with Jude Law and Rachel McAdams, this is certainly an enjoyable movie for fans of Downey and/or Holmes. Totally recommend.

There's nothing much to say other than the fact that I'm a huge fan of both RDJ Sherlock Holmes films. They have the classic nostalgia from the previous films and their own spin that makes them unique. The blu ray quality is decent as well

I've always been a fan of Guy Ritchie films and I was thrilled when he was picked for the Sherlock Holmes series. The plot is good but it can take some time to get used to how Ritchie films and directs. The plot also could have been a little better. If you're not used to this type of cinematography you may be caught off guard at first. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law were a perfect fit together.

When I first heard that RDJ was going to be Sherlock Holmes, I was really skeptical, but would keep an open mind when I went to go see it. I think his 'quirkiness' helped make the character of Holmes. Jude Law's rendition of Dr. Watson was just as good as RDJ's was of Holmes.

Good re-boot of the Sherlock Holmes franchise. Robert Downey Jr. is the perfect actor for this role. He definitely steals the show as the eccentric Sherlock Holmes. In my view, this is on par with the BBC version of Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch. Great movie with good actors and fun action sequences!

I never thought Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) would play a good Sherlock Holmes, but he nailed it. Action is pretty good and Jude Law is an excellent actor, as good as Robert Downey Jr; if not better. If you like mystery movies with a good action sequence and a twist at the end, this is for you.

Sherlock Holmes is an excellent movie! Caught my attention right from the start, and I watched it without a pause (often I watch a movie in 2 or 3 sessions). Plot was interesting, with some unanticipated twists.. Cinematography was very well done, and the chemistry between the 2 stars was great!
