    Singing in the Rain

Aside from the obvious talent and legendary performance of Gene Kelly, this movie showcased a very young Debbie Reynolds. I had not seen this movie since I was a child and had totally forgotten that she was in this movie. It was such a treat to see her and also to hear her sing the song 'Good morning'. As a child, that song had stuck in my head but, I didn't remember who sang it or where it came from. A great movie. One for the ages is simply an over statement.

"Singin' in the Rain" is arguably, one of the best if not THE best musical ever made. The title song, vocalized and choreographed by Gene Kelly is enough to make the movie a classic. When I saw a revival at Radio City Music Hall in the 1970s, the audience applauded. However, there are more fantastic and fun song-and-dance numbers, including the epic finale "Gotta Dance" with Cyd Charisse. If that's not enough, the story, (Written by Comden and Greene), which concerns the birth of talking pictures is satirical but close to the truth. Besides Kelly, Donald O' Conner shows his talents as a comic, creating bits for his "Make 'Em Laugh," number; Debbie Reynolds is a charming leading lady, and Jean Hagen, who would voice Miss Adelaide in "Guys and Dolls" a few years later, employs her Brooklyn-Jersey accent as Lena, the silent film star whose vocals are as grating as her personality. Actually, Ms. Hagen had a lovely voice and does the voice-over for Debbie Reynolds, who is supposed to be dubbing Lena! This 60th Anniversary blu ray is visually stunning and sounds great too. There's a commentary and a new documentary that will fill you in on the making of the film and how it's found new audiences over the years. Plus, at a $15 price tag, it's a "Best Buy".

    One of the Very Best

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN's story is well known, and concerns 1920s silent romantic acting team Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen.) Trouble is that sound is coming in--and Lina's speaking voice could peel paint off the wall. The solution? Don's best friend (Donald O'Connor) and love interest (Debbie Reynolds) have the inspiration of revamping Lockwood and Lamont's debut sound film as a musical, with Reynolds dubbing Hagen's vocals. The resulting story is a high-energy, extremely witty, and truly sparkling film laced with period songs by Arthur Freed, a film that many regard as the single finest musical to emerge from Hollywood. In many respects SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is a throwback to the early musicals of the era it satirizes, for many of its musical numbers ('Make 'em Laugh' is a notable example) have absolutely nothing to do with the story it tells--but unlike such early musicals the storyline is exceptionally strong, and since the film is about the creation of an early "all talking, all dancing, all singing" movie in which such musical numbers were typical, they have here a certain validity that could not otherwise be achieved. The cast is absolutely flawless, and without exception Kelly, Reynolds, O'Connor, and Hagen (particularly memorable as the literally unspeakable silent star) give the finest performances of their respective careers. The musical numbers range from the vibrant and complex 'Good Morning' to the lyrical 'You Are My Lucky Star' to the brilliantly conceived and executed title song, each without exception the definition of perfection. The art designs are meticulous, beautiful, and recreate the late-silent and early-sound era of Hollywood with considerable wit and charm. As a whole, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN possesses an engergy and vitality that simply makes you bounce in your seat from excitement. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is a musical that even people who hate musicals love. Whether or not you consider it "the" finest musical ever created by Hollywood is, ultimately, a matter of personal preference; there are several contenders for that title, most notably MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, GIGI, and THE WIZARD OF OZ. But no matter where you personally rank it, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is certainly ONE of the best, a film that simply gains in critical and popular stature with every passing year, a national and a world treasure of cinematic art.

Arguably the greatest movie musical of all time, Singin' in the Rain holds up well enough to win over a whole new generation of fans. Whether they give it a fair shot to do so is another matter entirely. Thankfully, Warner has granted the film an extensive 4K remaster, an impressive (albeit slightly flawed) video presentation, an absolutely terrific DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track and a few solid extras, among them an audio commentary and a newly produced high-definition documentary. The concurrently released Collector's Edition gift set is pricier, but offers a second disc of SD bonus content, a 48-page hardcover book, a full-size movie-themed umbrella, and more. Regardless of which version you choose, just be sure to choose Singin' in the Rain. It doesn't matter what year you were born, Kelly and Freed's timeless classic deserves a shot at earning a spot in your collection.

"Singin' in the Rain" ~ A classic if ever there was one... A tribute and spoof (in the best sense of the term) all rolled into one. A rollicking look at the 20's moving into the 30's through the advent of "Talking Pictures" and the hilarity that followed. Stellar Cast & Crew...Kelly, Reynolds, O'Conner and Hagan are top notch. Jean Hagan as the gorgeous Silent Screen Siren with the "Voice like Nails on a Chalkboard"...walked away with this film and an Oscar Nomination for her role. Cyd Charisse lights up the screen with her sultry dancing. "Singin' in the Rain" ~ Not to be missed...Ever!!!

I had been thinking about getting some old-time, classic movies on Blu-ray and there it was--"Singin' in the Rain"! The Blu-ray picture quality is great. There is something wonderful about old, classic movies that make it worthwhile to watch over and over again.

This movie was written around the title song. They had no script or even a story until Adolph Green and Betty Comden got together and worked their magic, turning one simple song into the best Hollywood musical, ever produced! Highly recommended! I'd give it 10 stars, if I could!

I was considering buying the much more expensive 3 disk package ($80) as a gift, but after reading the reviews for the two packages this one seemed like a much better value since the more expensive package included a book and umbrella.

This classic picture looks so bright and colorful on blue ray. Kelly, O'Connor, and Reynolds are the top notch class from yesteryear. You won't find a more loving example of good old fashioned goofiness, how television was supposed to be.

I remember watching this movie with my grandmother when I was younger. Now that I am much older, I can see the movie is beyond song and dance. It is about the time period of silent movies ending and sound becoming popular with the public.
