A fresh spin on an old franchise

I've never exactly been a huge fan of the James Bond line of movies. He was an extremely heterosexual male, he slept with several women, the bad guy was introduced, and James Bond vanquished him. Same story line. Same film. Day in and day out. It was quite refreshing that this film had the courage to put all of those things on its head. In Skyfall, James finds himself old, rusty, and lacking confidence. A antagonist that challenges the effectiveness of the overly heterosexual brute and makes 007 dig deep to overcome him. The film also puts several things important to the franchise on the line. It makes the film have consequences if James Bond were to fail. And that's what makes the film so enticing. You're actually afraid that James may not do it this time. Truly on the edge of your seat entertainment, and probably the best Bond film in ages. I'd recommend this film to Bond fans new and old. Please go check it out.

I was not wild about this move the first time I saw it but came to appreciate it more on subsequent viewings. It is actually very cleverly constructed as a reboot of the franchise, with the introduction of a new Moneypenny and Q. I am not wild about those choices (political correctness reigns) there but the story is compelling enough. You may wonder if you are even watching a Bond movie in the beginning since you don't get but one note of the classic opening trumpet fanfare theme music. That is followed by the usual opening chase scene, however, and story roars on from there. With a few detours along the way (Bond is seemingly killed) . It is not until well past the midpoint, after bond recovers his classic Aston Martin DB-7 from Goldfinger (there is even a joke about the ejection seat) that the classic theme music returns and it really begins to feel like a Bond movie. And not until the end of the movie that we discover who Moneypenny really is (hint, an attractive but sedate secretary will not do in an era where all women in Hollywood movies must be strong and perfect heroes) Worth a look if you can stomach the PC changes in characters.

This movie brings James bonds childhood out into the light. We now know why (after 53 years) he has no family. We know that in Great Britain when you die or are thought to be dead, they sell all of your stuff and "carry on". People tend to hold grudges and bide their time to get even; when they are wronged (whether real or perceived). When they do try to get even, well; "That is why we can't have nice things." The night scenes of Macau on the water are really great. This truly is what Singapore and Hong kong look like at night. This video was well worth the money. This appears to be the start of a possible new direction for "Mr. Bond". No home to go home too? But you will need to watch it to see what I mean. Enjoy this with your friends.

The 4k version of this disc was played on a sony x800M2 4k blu ray player and displayed on a sony bravia x950h 65 in tv. The disc supports dolby vision as do both player and tv. Under the conditions described this disc is fantastic. The scenes of the skyline of Shanghi at night show deep blacks and brilliant flourescent colors that make good use of the wide color gamut and color volumn. The detail shown is very good. Lots of clearly visible facial features...wrinkles, pores etc. Skyfall is my favorite of the Daniel Craig set so I'm glad it looks so good.

Last year I had purchased the Bond movie collection and it included a slot for the as-yet-then-unreleased Skyfall. When I saw Skyfall pop up on Best Buy for $4.99 it seemed the time to purchase! For the most part I have enjoyed the more recent Bond movies staring Daniel Craig. In many ways I think he is the best actor to portray Bond. I also very much enjoyed the cinematography of this film. A little darker and more brooding... not unlike Bond himself. That said, there are a few issues I had with this movie. First, the villain is plain awful. While the acting was ok the character just falls flat for me. In some instances I thought the character almost comedic in that Roger Moore/Bond films day. Second, I did not like the new Q at all. I don't know if this is a nod to modernity or trying to freshen the franchise with a hipster or what, but not unlike the villain Q fell flat for me. Someone with a comedic bent should be playing that role, but not necessarily an outright comedian. While I may love John Cleese I didn't find him 'right' for the role either. Desmond Llewelyn really hit the spot in my mind. I'm thinking Q should be played by someone like Matt Damon, who can pull-off funny, but isn't a comic outright.

After 50 years of Bond movies, you would think that the series should be worn out by now. I think in large part because of Daniel Craig however, James Bond still has plenty of life left. He not only gave us the best version of Bond since Sean Connery, he also has given the character depth. Skyfall is contemporary, yet has many classic nods to past Bond movies if you pay attention. What we liked about Bond movies is still there front and center: the action, the intrigue, the women, the locales, and Bond himself. The Blu-Ray transfer is superb...picture quality is definitely as top-notch at it was at the theater. The sound quality matches up to it too, especially on DTS-HD MA 5.1. I'd recommend this as a worthy collection to your library of movies, whether you're a serious Bond fan or not.

The finest of the Craig series, and one of the best Bond films EVER. Spectacular action, great acting, Craig again terrific, as is everyone else. great plot, direction, one of the best songs ever by Adele. An Oscar winner. British Secret Service under attack and Bond out to find the villain and reveal the plot. Intricate, and fascinating, so much stronger than last installment, and for new viewers, a few surprises in hand. A true classic. I can't speak highly enough about it except to say even if you're not a Bond fan, see this one...you may change your mind.

Daniel Craig (who has now become my favorite Bond) returns for his third installment as James Bond in one of the best Bond movies yet. The action and cinematography are excellent, there is no cheesy filler (just like there isn't in the prior Craig Bond movies either), and the story is very good. Having said that about the story, the plot does contain a few small issues. There are a couple of points that could be seen as fan service throwbacks to older Bond movies, but nothing major that takes you out of the story... and there are a couple points where the story stretches believability for a bit. But again, these in no way take away from the enjoyment of watching the movie, even for many repeat viewings.

Decent steelbook with a simple but clean design. Looks nice when placed with the other Bond steelbooks in the 4K collection. Film is in 4K but special features are only on the standard blu ray disc. Having the film and features all in 4K would've been nice but that's likely going to be reserved for a future release. The film itself is excellent, easily the best of Daniel Craig's Bond films and looks great in 4K. The steelbook itself is the second best looking one in the 4K collection after the one for Casino Royale.

The year is young, but Skyfall is already shaping up to be one of 2013's biggest sellers on Blu-ray. It hardly needs my recommendation, but I'll give it anyway. Whether you're filling that empty space in your Bond 50 set or just want to see Skyfall again in a first-rate presentation, this Blu-ray edition is a worthwhile addition to your library. Just be aware that, as with all things Bond, there will be future editions. (Yes, plural.) But buy this one now, and you can always wait to see what extras the others have to offer. It's hard to imagine that the audio/video presentation can get much better. Highly recommended.

James Bond is in fine form as usual. His stoic demeanor is broken up by the tragic death of M toward the end. M's death was the most emotional point of the story. After many years watching M's interactions with James Bond, it is going to be hard to get used to the new M. However, life is a progression and thus, life in the movies also moves on. The new, younger Q is more technically savvy than the former Q and adds some humor and wit to the whole story. I would rate this as the most bitter sweet Bond story ever and is a great tribute to celebrate the passing of a great M.

Bought this item on sale around Christmas. The ordering took me less than 5 minutes, I was able to use reward points on my order, the shipping options were great and the disc arrived in plenty of time in great condition. This best buy purchase was flawless. **Side note: This was being purchased for someone who had received the most recent bluray box set release in 2013. The makers of that set had a placeholder for Skyfall so this disc could fit right in the box. Thought that was a stroke of genious. Of course you still need the case for the additional DVD disc, but I was surprised by the forethought anyway.
