I've had this product for about a year. I've burned close to 200 single layer DVDs, about 50 double layer DVDs, and I have no idea how many CDs. I've had maybe a handful bad disks. I also have an older Plextor in this machine and a Samsung SATA in my new box. I would recommend any of those 3, if have had few bad burns. I have found that programs that let you increase the laser strength for the burn are helpful on creating disks to read in shoddy DVD players or in car CD players that can be fickle.

Good deal if you don't need black bezel

Black bezel had a molding problem (mfg/design issue) and would not mate to the drive without breaking out the dremel and milling out a hole. If the stock bezel matches your decor...this is a good deal.

This burner is the perfect choice when it comes to someone with a limited income. For a cheap price it offers more than any other burner in its price range. Honestly you get what you pay for when it comes to speed, but it gets the job done for a fraction of the cost that others pay!

I bought this DVD burner about a month ago and I have to say, it works great. Every piece of media I've thrown at it has been read from and written to without issues. It's very quiet when burning and, of course, very fast. I have yet to have one failed burn (except the one time I tried the "overburn" option on my burning program which supposedly allows you to burn a little extra data than the disc can handle, I don't know how it planned to accomplish this but it didn't work out in the end, maybe you need some kind of special media). I'm using this on an Ubuntu Linux system (7.10 and then 8.04) (even though it says "Windows" all over the box, don't let that phase you if you're using Mac OS X, Linux, or any other operating system). I installed it internally into my Dell Dimension 8100 and it worked like a charm. Haven't tried it under Windows yet but I'm sure it works just as well. Oh, and one thing I didn't notice when buying it is that it has an additional faceplate set, for those of you with a black case. The instructions for changing out the face plate were slightly incomprehensible, but I figured them out in the end. Overall, I'm glad I payed the few extra dollars for a Sony. Their quality in computer components is still pretty good.

When the drive DID actually complete a burn the DVD had many visible flaws. Had to go back to my old no-name 8x burner until I could get this thing back to the store. Recommendations: Plextor, Lite-On, the new Samsung No more Sony burners for me!!!

Worked great at first actually, but then like a month of very little burning; every other dvd would burn correctly. Went and bought a lite-on dvd burner and it worked. Go figure! Don't buy this Piece of mess.
