This is a great surround receiver for the money. Works as advertised and setup couldn't have been easier. Furthermore, the onscreen(tv) menus make changing settings a breeze.

Setup took about 10 minutes. The automatic sound balancing is great! Easy to do using the included microphone. My surround sound setup sounds way better now with this amp.

Did everything I wanted without spending more. The 5 HDMI's enabled me to hook all of my componets and everything sounds great through the surround sound. Best price around too.

Unit works great but has limited features. -No Bluetooth. Requires an adapter to work -USB port doesn't recognize Android devices -doesn't support 4K but is listed on box Same 5.2 level Yamaha unit has all of those features. Would recommend the Yamaha to get these basic features for the price. Unit is outdated and only good for a basic budget setup.

The product works well for the price. Instructions are not very good to set channels. Even on line instructions did not help. Sound quality is good.

Replaced an old Sony system with this new model. Only needed 5.1 because I have an older house and 30 year old speakers. Easy set-up, plenty of inputs, good processor.

Outstanding Performance for Entry Level Receiver

When my 8 year old (and significantly more expensive) Onkyo A/V receiver developed a problem with its video output I decided to look into buying a new unit that would support 4K pass-through. After much research I settled on the Sony STR-DH550, and it was the perfect choice for me. Truth be told, my Onkyo was a great A/V receiver but it's capabilities were way beyond what I actually needed. Due to its age, the Onkyo had no 4K capabilities and the cost to repair it would have been about the same as buying a new unit with newer technology. So I sat down with myself and thought about what it was that I really needed to achieve the results I wanted. My surround system is 5.1 so having a receiver that could drive 9 speakers really was of no benefit to me. I have a fairly good size collection of DVD's and Blu-Ray disks that don't use the newer Atmos surround effects, so that was something that at this point I don't really need either. I find that the Sony STR-DH550 has more than enough power to drive my speakers (my subwoofer is a 10" with it's own 250W built-in amp so the receiver doesn't actually drive the sub) and it has a great amount of flexibility/adjustability that allows me to set the levels for all of my speakers exactly the way I want. The built in speaker calibration function works well and is very easy to use. After running the calibration program I did some additional manual tweaking of the individual speaker settings to get the sound stage I wanted and it sounds great! I think even better than what I had with the Onkyo. The on-screen menus are very basic but I find them easy to navigate and easy to change settings. Both sound quality and picture quality are excellent. I am on the Comcast Xfinity X1 platform and running it through this Sony receiver gives excellent results. The remote control is fairly basic and easy to use; the only drawback is that the buttons are not backlit. This receiver is a "bare bones" entry level unit, but for the price the features are really good and it meets all of my needs with flying colors. Since this is an entry level model there are some limitations with the available connections, i.e. there is no input for a turntable, and the composite inputs (i.e. for a VCR) do not output through the HDMI cable connection to the TV. I do still have a VCR due to a large collection of video tapes, so I purchased from a third party a composite-to-HDMI converter that allows me to connect my VCR through a HDMI input which will then route the output through the HDMI cable to the TV. This was an inexpensive and simple solution for my VCR that works great. So, in conclusion, if you're looking for an inexpensive great receiver to drive your 5.1 surround system, has great sound and picture quality, is capable of both 3D and 4K pass-through, and you don't need a lot of extra "bells and whistles" then this is a unit that you should give some serious consideration.

I had to replace the receiver on my surround sound system in my R.V. as the old one was bad. I was able to easily hook up the wiring as the diagrams were very clear and terminals clearly marked. it also has auto program to calibrate the speakers, It works great.

    Excellent Amp for Media System

This is a great amp to use with a 5.1 sound system for your media center. I have a Plasma TV, BR/DVD, turn Table, Bluetooth adaptor, and Amazon Fire attached to the system and it works well. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was that the subwoofer was not amplified, you will need an active woofer speaker with it on amp to get the 0.1 part of 5.1 working. It says the there are only 5 amphied channels in the specifications and I should have read them closer. I just assumed that the woofer channel would be included.

I chose this cause it was cost effective and it let my Polk powered towers go nuts with an mtx center and my 2 jamo towers in the rear. The output on this is crazy but having a 5.3 which includes my powered towers and my kenwood woofer this helps power everything without overheating. I would reccomend if you don't have anything crazy powerful or if you have powered something else. I was not a Sony guy and am still on fence but this reciever is worth the buck especially for the bang!
