Plenty power, plenty of options and plenty of HDMI ports at a budget price. I bought this on sale and it was a great value. Sounds fantastic for music and adds a real theater 5.2 sound field for my bedroom, which is fairly large. Easy to setup and the included microphone makes optimization so simple. Great purchase!

I needed a relatively inexpensive FM receiver that could drive several speakers for my basement workshop. I have speakers located in different areas of the shop. My main need was for an FM receiver. The Sony had more than enough power and speaker outputs along with a remote. I am not using it in a ultra sound rich environment, as you can tell, but the sound is great and I would have no reservations about using it as a main amp for a TV sound system.

I like this unit because it was inexpensive and had the inputs and outputs I wanted. The FM receiver doesn't seem to be as sensitive as it should be. Couldn't pickup all the stations my car radio can. It has all the power I need and decent sound quality.

Lets get price out of the way. It was a great buy. That withstanding, lets move on. Easy setup. Surround sound setup is simple with the included mic that does it for you. There is a limitation as far as the number of speakers it will accommodate in a surround sound field. The most it will do is a 5.1 setup (which is fine. That's what I have. 3 front, 2 rear + subwoofer). If you must have a 7 or 7.1 setup you're out of luck. The on-screen menus are minimal and antiquated but functional and do the job. Graphically they're terrible but who cares. All I care about is what the receiver does, not what the setup looks like. And the receiver performs like a charm. Sounds fantastic. Surround is beautiful and it has enough inputs to accommodate whatever you need. I would recommend it to anyone that does not have a 7 or 7.1 speaker setup.

I bought this to replace a 20 year old receiver. It was simple to set up and use. No manual is needed. I bought it knowing it didn't have built in bluetooth, but I had a bluetooth receiver that plugs right in. The sound is really good, and is great for low to medium volumes in a small den. It won't rattle the windows, but that's fine with me.

Went to the store to buy a Denon and they were out of the one I wanted so I went for my other choice a Sony, rather that wait. I am very happy I did as this unit is awesome. It sounds great, lots of power to irritate my neighbors, easy to set up and it performs flawlessly, it is very user friendly. When I turn it on the room comes to life especially the sports action in full surround sound. Sony has always made really high quality products and this item is a reflection of that quality and a great addition to my home theater setup. The microphone that comes with it makes it so simple to get the speaker level where you want it to be and it can still tweaked if needed or wanted. The on screen programming make it a breeze to set everything up. I have no complaints about this Sony STRDH550 and would buy it again.

I am only giving this receiver a 4 out of 5 because of the random switching to a different source that occurs when watching tv. The receiver likes to just switch to another port thats on by its self from time to time. But other then that it was a easy set up and works well with my 5 speaker surround sound set up.

The good: The receiver was easy to set up. The sound is great. That is after all why we buy Sony products. The bad: The remote control even with the instructions is impossible to figure out. I did not know that to set additional settings like AM and FM presets that a TV screen was going to be required. Since the stereo is set up away from a TV I will have to wait to drag TV over to do programming. Wish I had known that in advance since no other review mentioned it or the issues with setting up and using the remote control. Additionally one has to go online to download a manual. For the couple of bucks it would be nice if manufacturers would still supply complete paper manuals so we do not have to run between computer and stereo to figure out settings.

I purchased this for my living room along with the Sony speakers and a Polk sub. I'm very happy with the sound for the price. I could have spent 10 times the amount, but would the sound be worth it? I also love the simple use of the unit. This is a vacation home and others will use it, so I wanted something that was easy to operate.

It sounds better than the one it replaced, it's pretty easy to hookup, the HDMI is fast (the Pioneer was lame), the remote is simple and for the money it's great. And a bit of unsolicited advice - buy better speakers!

This Receiver may only be 5.1, but delivers outstanding sound quality and is easy for the family to operate. Integrates well with our Sony Bravia TV and Blu-Ray player. I love the auto configure feature and this receiver delivers much better surround sound than the Pioneer receive it replaced.

Perfectly acceptable device at a really attractive price point. I was not looking for uber sophistication nor excessive features, but wanted to drive 7 rooms worth of built-in speakers. This device is doing the job just fine.

The receiver is very big. If you put it in almost any component stand it will overheat. I strongly recommend buying a fan for it as it overheats easily

I replaced a 15 year old RCA surround receiver with this, that had been great but was beginning to hum, and had no HDMI inputs. I was initially a bit skeptical, thought it might just be cheap, but we didn't need 7.1, as our room is wired for 5.1. After setting it up and listening, my wife and I are really happy with it, it sounds great and has great features. Best of all, it's very easy to use for my wife, who isn't a techy at all! We've had it installed for a few weeks now, I just hope it lasts as long as the old RCA!

Our older system was also SONY & it was nearing the end of it's life when we decided to look for a newer model to replace it. This newer model is amazing! Great sound. Easy to set up. My husband loves it!

    GREAT Bedroom TV Sound System

The Sony 5.1 (with 4 Polk bookshelf speakers suspended from the ceiling and center channel) was purchased to add to our bedroom flat screen and give us a little more punch than the old sound bar. We have not added the subwoofer, yet, and we are only in for $300 by taking advantage of Best Buy's Black Friday sales. We have a great sound and is outstanding for our streamed movies. Our living room AV system runs rings around this Sony (Pioneer 7.2 with Klipsch) so, if you are looking for a truly high end sound you are not going to get it with the Sony. If you want a great sound for a smaller room and don't want to spend a lot of money... Get the Sony.

Once I scanned the instructions on my phone the set up was relatively quick. The sound is excellent...when it works. Sometimes, for no reason at all the sound cuts off completely. And sometimes, again w/o reason the the screen changes on its own from inputs(cable box to game or cable box to dvd or netfilx to cable box) this part is frustrating. But when it doesn’t do these things, the sound is great.

Straight-forward to set up. More than good enough for an apartment. Plenty of options for setting up; great flexibility with the number and types of inputs.
