Outstanding sound from a unique design!

The SONY Bravia Theatre Quad, the follow-on to the "HT-A9" series, offers a seriously impressive sound experience with a new physical design. While continuing the central transmitter to wireless speaker architecture, the circular speakers have been replaced with a slightly smaller, "pancake" format that makes their placement more like conventional speakers, although in a much slimmer package. In spite of that smaller size each of the four speakers includes 4 drivers and that translates into some serious punch!
The unpacking and setup were straight forward. The only assembly required is the attachment of your preferred mounting hardware. The box contains both a circular foot for mounting on a stand or table top and wall brackets. So, you can even mix-and-match if that best meets your needs!
Your initial concerns about might be how it would affect the sound field but that is where the SONY magic starts!
Somehow SONY has figured out a system where you can truly place the speakers just about anywhere (within reason) and it will figure out how to adjust the sound from each speaker to create an amazingly enveloping surround experience. My room is a torture case for most soundbar like solutions - vaulted ceilings, irregularly shaped and only enclosed on three sides! Yet, the Quad system has managed to create a very convincing bubble to my listening position!
I have watched movies True HD, DTS-X, several Dolby Atmos modes, 5.1, 7.1 and even some older movies in stereo and all have been impressive. I also watched a variety of streaming content with compressed audio modes and the Quad does a very good job.
I have listened to several sample HD audio music pieces (Dolby, FLAC, LCPM, Stereo) and the system sounds very good. The unit creates a very good, enveloping, sound with convincing virtual channels and has plenty of volume for my listening need.
Replacing my soundbar with the single "attachment" transmitter box also gives a much cleaner and more compact look to my TV area. The unit only includes two HDMI connections and one of those is for the eARC connection so I did lose one connection compared to my previous setup but I was able to rework my connections so that everything I need still has a place to connect.
As for the downsides, there are a few. The virtual center channel is not quite as robust as I would like and there is really no detailed way to tweak the individual channels. There is no equalizer capability, only a "Sound field" toggle, a "Voice" enhancement feature and a "Night" mode. These effects are effective if a bit subtle. The provided remote is extremely small, lightweight and is not back-lit. The app is straight forward but adds little additional functionality. I am hoping future FW updates may add some additional features.
Finally. although the speakers do deliver a decent amount of bass, the unit would definitely benefit from the addition of a sub woofer. Unfortunately SONY chose to make that an additional purchase which seems a bit odd at this price point.
All said, the Quad's abilities outweigh the negatives and I will be retiring my old premium soundbar for this one! It is definitely worth including on your short list but DO plan on spending the extra money for one of SONY's wireless subs!

I’ve always been an old school, tower speaker guy, so I thought there was no way that these ‘little’ speakers could fill the shoes of my trusty old towers. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Before you even get them set up, you’ll notice that the packaging is immaculate. Each of the four speakers is in its own section of the box. Within each section is everything associated with a single speaker.
Setup is very simple and you probably won’t even need to look at the instructions. Pull the main unit out & connect it to power and HDMI. Then pull each speaker out, attach the stand (or use the included wall mount configuration) with a couple of screws, and plug each speaker into AC power. NO speaker wires to run. Zero. Not even for the fronts. Fire up the app (yes, you need the app) and it will walk you through the rest. Start to finish in less than 30 minutes.
The 360 Spatial Sound Mapping is simply amazing. I’ve had several surround sound setups over the years, but none have had this level of immersion. There was one simple scene in The Bourne Identity that caught my attention where birds were flying around in an open field; somehow these speakers made it sound like the birds were actually above you, not just around you. And although there’s no dedicated center speaker, it manages to keep the dialog in focus surprisingly well. I’ve had other systems that required me to turn the volume up to adequately hear the dialog, only to be almost deafened when an action sequence comes in. It is hands down one of the best sounding home theater systems I’ve ever experienced.
That being said, if you’re one who likes foundation shaking bass, you may want to spring for one of the compatible subwoofer units as this does not come with a sub. For everyone else, unless you're getting a package discount or something, give it a shot without the sub first; you might be pleasantly surprised. Personally I like a little more bass, so I’m considering adding the sub.
Music source connectivity is so-so with support for AirPlay, Spotify Connect, and Bluetooth. I don’t have any Apple devices, so I couldn’t test AirPlay, but I was able to use Spotify Connect and Bluetooth with no issues at all.
Overall it’s an amazing system and has brought our movie watching experience to a new level. Highly recommend.
Great! We're glad that you like the packaging, user-friendly functions, connectivity, and sound quality of the surround sound system. Thank you for choosing Sony!

Right front speaker won't connect! Instead of returning it to the store I sent it to Sony to get repaired. Over a month later they just sent it back to me with the same problem. It cannot be set up and Sony's customer service has been giving me the run around and now I am stuck with an over priced system that I have never got to use.

Be prepared to be amazed by the Sony Bravia Quad!

I’m coming from an older Pioneer Elite 9.1 receiver sc-67 and some good la acoustic speakers. I can say without a doubt this SONY quad is comparable and in some ways even sounds better. That I was not expecting at all. I wanted to keep my system but my spouse wanted a cleaner set up without so many speakers and wires. After kicking and screaming I gave in. I can truly say this SONY Bravia theatre Quad is the real deal and very comparable even to my old $4000 system. The only two gripes I have are I wish I had more controls in the app like the pioneer receiver had. I also with it had more hdmi ports, and an option to put a second subwoofer, or open it up to be able to use other subwoofers with it. The magic of the phantom speaker is pretty amazing and does what the Pioneer did with their version called virtual height ands sides speakers. It is only a matter of time before this type of system surpasses even an audiophiles expensive sound system. This was a had pill for me to swallow, but this system is amazing! My spouse was always asking me to use the emphasis and dialogue enhancement on the pioneer control app, but with the quad we have very rarely had to use the voice mode. I highly recommend getting one of the compatible subwoofers as you will be missing out on the full potential this system has to offer if you don’t have one. I have this paired with the Sony SW-5 subwoofer and it definitely takes it to that next level theater quality.
People often wonder what the difference between the Sony Quad and the model that this replaced which was called the Sony HT-A9. These new quad speakers are flat and while the old ones looked more like canisters. The new Quad speakers also have 4 speakers in them vs the old one which had three. This means you get a total of 4 speakers in each of the 4 speakers giving you a total of 16 total speakers. The Quad also has a better wireless antennas which are 2.5 more range and have channel hopping features to prevent dropouts.
The previous HT-A9 model featured a function that analyzed the relative positions of its four speakers and adjusted the sound field accordingly. This ensured an immersive spatial audio experience, even when the speakers were not placed in ideal locations.
With the new BRAVIA Theatre Quad model, two additional measurement functions have been introduced.
The first function evaluates the acoustic environment of the speaker placement and adjusts the audio accordingly. It detects and compensates for changes caused by room elements such as furniture, curtains, and wall materials, each of which affects sound differently. For instance, in a concrete room where sound tends to reverberate, the system can reduce excessive echoes for a more balanced audio experience.
The second function adjusts the sound based on the listener’s position. By having the user hold their smartphone at their usual viewing spot, the system can optimize the audio specifically for that location, ensuring a tailored listening experience.
Psychoacoustic technology creates the illusion of spatial sound for the listener, but its effectiveness varies from person to person and is limited to certain areas. In contrast, 360 SSM technology generates a true sound field, providing a more consistent and immersive experience for a wider audience. This makes it ideal for those who were never fully satisfied with virtual surround sound or those looking to enjoy a rich spatial audio experience with family and friends.
Virtual surround sound relies on psychoacoustic technology to create the illusion of spatial audio for the listener. However, its effectiveness varies from person to person and is limited to specific areas. In contrast, 360 SSM technology generates an actual sound field, providing a more immersive and consistent experience across a wider area. Those who have been unsatisfied with virtual surround sound or who want to enjoy a true spatial audio experience with family and friends should definitely try 360 SSM.
Sony’s 360 Sound Spatial Mapping (360 SSM) is an innovative technology that integrates distance measurement, which detects the relative positions of speakers and their distance from the ceiling, with a physical sound field reproduction method known as “monopole synthesis.” By combining sound waves from multiple real speakers positioned around the listener, it creates realistic audio from phantom speakers—virtual sound sources placed in optimal positions based on the content format.
The changes go beyond just the design. To create an even more immersive spatial sound experience. Sony completely reengineered the internal structure of the speakers. They asked: How should the speakers be positioned to maximize the potential of 360 SSM and enhance the sense of space? How can we make dialogue clearer and more distinct? These questions sparked deep discussions among the development team, encouraging collaboration across disciplines to push the boundaries of innovation.
Believe the hype because this little system is amazing with movies, and it also brings your music to life as well. I am rediscovering the joy of movies and the immersion that this system brings to them. From an audiophile like myself I can say I’m pretty happy and beyond amazed at what Sony has created with there amazing 360 audio sound and engineering.
Hi PorfieM, Awesome! We are so glad to hear that you are enjoying the HTA9M2! Thank you so much for your review and for choosing Sony! -Carl

A world apart from soundbars

Verdict. The Sony Bravia Theater Quad is sleek, powerful, immersive, easy to install, easy to use, and highly enjoyable. It could benefit from a subwoofer, but most users will be more than completely satisfied with the package as is, especially if coming from a soundbar.
Initial impressions. I expected a much larger box for a home theater system. The box is heavy for it’s size. Unpacking is easy. Speakers have a premium feel and look great. I love the grey cloth material. The room we used for this system has beige walls, but it still looks great. Grey is a popular paint color, so perhaps for many people these speakers will blend-in even better. I love the thin form factor because they are less noticeable when hanging on a wall, or when standing on furniture.
Setup. Physical installation was relatively easy for us because we only needed to mount two of the four speakers. The speakers are labelled for the correct position, so no chance of mix up if you are paying attention. We installed this in a small-ish room with a projector, so we had to mount the two front speakers lower than most people would so that we could still use most of the wall space for the projector screen. I significantly dislike the power cables hanging from the mounted speakers, but at least the cables are white. We mounted the speakers right at 8 feet apart. Then we positioned the two back speakers on a built-in cabinet on the back wall, about 6 feet apart. Thanks to two plugs built into the built-in, the back speakers look fantastic. The fact that the speakers are wireless (no speaker wire required to go back to the control box), you can really position the speakers anywhere without installation headaches. Completing the installation requires the Sony Bravia app, a Sony account (I already had one), and using your smartphone for calibration. Setup was mostly smooth but took a little bit of time.
App. I have two Sony apps now… Not sure why this setup couldn’t be managed in the Sony Sound app. The app is mostly helpful for setup but there isn’t a whole lot of added functionality or tools.
Sound. The Sony Quad replaced a soundbar and subwoofer system from a different brand. While I wish this system came with a subwoofer (especially at this price point and for the targeted customers), the systems performs well without one… but still leaves me wanting just a bit more because I had a subwoofer before. Sound for movie watching is exceptional: balanced, immersive, dynamic, clear, and powerful. For content with Dolby Atmos… Wow!! I can’t imagine a better experience. The speakers are plenty loud, and the four-speaker configuration allows for better sound quality at lower volume. A world apart from soundbars… I was quite happy with my soundbar and sub for years, but I could not go back now. I did not test these speakers for music since we don’t listen to music in the movie room.
Things I love:
- Exceptional sound
- Incredible immersive feel (especially with Dolby Atmos)
- Beautiful slim design and great fabric color and feel
- Wireless sound connectivity
- Small but functional remote control
Things I don’t love:
- The app could offer a lot more functionality and tools
- At this price point, it should include a subwoofer
Conclusion. If you are looking for an exceptional and immersive surround-sound movie theater experience that is easy to install in your home, I highly recommend the Sony Bravia Theater Quad. While pricey and lacking a subwoofer, the sound delights in providing an amazing home theater experience that will please most people. I highly recommend this theater system.
We regret to hear that you are not satisfied with the BRAVIA Theater Quad. For optimum performance, make sure that the software version of the home theater system is up-to-date (via the Sony BRAVIA Connect app; Tap Settings - Software update).
Sound quality may vary depending on the source content. You have the option to adjust the settings of the home theater system to fine-tune the sound quality to your needs. You may find this link helpful:
If the home theater system is not working properly, reset the control box and speakers:
Resetting the control box -Press and hold (power) on the control box for more than 10 seconds.
Resetting the speakers -Press and hold LINK on the bottom of the speaker for more than 10 seconds.
The power indicator on the speaker flashes slowly in red and the reset starts. The power indicator on the speaker flashes in green and amber alternately when the reset is completed. After the reset is completed, disconnect the AC power cord (mains lead) for the speaker from the AC outlet (mains), then reconnect the AC power cord (mains lead) for the speaker after the power indicator on the speaker turns off.
Your feedback about the speaker design is also appreciated.

Great virtual theater sound, stereo music

When Sony released the HT-A9 system in 2021, I was really excited to have an option that installs pretty similar to a soundbar (clean, easy setup), but had the separation of a full surround sound system. I was impressed with the performance of the HT-A9, but had some issues with the speakers cutting out, making popping noises, and the control box would restart randomly at times. I was cautiously optimistic about the Theatre Quad (aka HT-A9M2) considering Sony made a few upgrades from the HT-A9 (one extra driver in each speaker, new control box, configuration now app based on your phone or tablet rather than relying on a TV based menu). Setup of the HT-A9M2 physically was very easy. There is one power cord for each speaker, and you have an option of putting a foot on each (included in the box), or there is a bracket screw on the back of each that you can use to either attach to a stand or mount to the wall (with wall mounts also included in the box). I chose to mount mine to stands and then placed them in the same locations as I had the HT-A9 speakers. The control box has for the most part all the same ports, except there isn’t an optical audio cable, with Sony emphasizing an HDMI connection, so if you have an old TV with no HDMI, keep this in consideration. I have the Sony SA-SW5 subwoofer, and it paired seamlessly with the HT-A9M2, just as it did with the HT-A9. As I mentioned before, this system now is configured in the Sony Bravia app. I was excited for this as the TV-based menu system of the HT-A9 was slow and tedious. Of course, you will want to make this system give you the best surround and height sound experience, so the app launches you into this setup pretty quickly. My system first had to perform updates. This is where I began to get a little frustrated. The process started and it kept canceling out. I was sitting in my preferred location, about 8 feet from the control box, and it took a solid 30 minutes of multiple tried to troubleshoot the fact that it works better if you are right next to the box with your device. Once I did that it finally updated. I then was able to configure the system. That took a few tries also, the speakers running through their sound profile and then it mysteriously telling me it didn’t complete. It was again pretty frustrating. It’s one of those experiences you hope you don’t have to do again. But you’re here for the sound I imagine. I ran the system through a gamut of sources that I like to use to try out speakers. First was streaming music from Apple Music through the Apple TV. I use this because it provides lossless content and Atmos music that I can actually tell is distinct. I’m happy to say the HT-A9M2 does a great job of throwing music all around the room. I noticed when comparing my HT-A9 to it that the HT-A9M2 has a fuller range of sound, I think due to the extra driver in each speaker. I also noticed the height effects were more pronounced without having to do manual adjustments in the app. So right out of the box the HT-A9M2 sounds phenomenal for music. There was great stereo separation, which is one of the reasons I consider this system far superior to any soundbar situation. Next I put on a streaming movie from Netflix. Again this source gives you real Atmos sound and I wanted to feel the content. I put on an episode of a nature series, one that has rain and thunder, and I will tell you that this blew me away. I feel like the height speakers in the HT-A9M2 have been upgraded, or maybe the processing is refined, but it was significantly better to me than the HT-A9 could do. I finally put in a DVD to my player that outputs Dolby TrueHD sound, and have my player directly plugged into the HDMI in port of the HT-A9M2. Again, I was elated that the HT-A9M2 handled this content perfectly. I had incredible surround sound flying around my head. I’m very pleased. As far as the look of the new speakers, I have to say I sort of prefer the cylindrical bodies of the HT-A9 over these fabric covered panels. I can see how someone might prefer these aesthetically, they are flat, so on a wall they would likely blend in more. It’s subjective. Overall, I would say the sound of these, the convenience of these make them a great buy. I wish they cost a bit less, for having to buy a separate subwoofer (which I think is needed, because the speakers give you some bass, but it’s not impressive), and for the fact that you don’t have a lot of configuration option to them. They do a good job of creating a sound scape, but it would be nice to have more customization at this price. If you want a great sound experience, both for music and for cinema, then I would not hesitate to recommend the Sony Theatre Quad.

I can't say enough about this home theater system. I've been using soundbars forever as an upgrade for TV audio. Honestly, how many TV's have great speakers... I'll wait... okay enough time. I can't think of any that can fill a room and enhance home theater viewing. Soundbars do a great job but you've got most of the sound coming from one enclosure, with few exceptions. I've had issues with soundbars with wireless rear speakers with the speakers cutting in and out, so frustrating!
The other alternative is running your TV through a stereo receiver which can be a little overkill for anything less than Star Wars, or in my case Formula 1 races. Those stereo systems work great but they tend to take up a lot of real estate with the receiver, subwoofer, center channel, 2 front and 2 rear speakers. I does work great but what if there was something that was basically just the speakers?
Sony Bravia Home Theater System is a fantastic alternative. So simple to setup too. Once unboxed I looked at available locations of the 4 wireless speakers. Each speaker is clearly marked so don't rush the setup and make sure to use the correct speaker for the correct location, although swapping later isn't really a big deal unless say you have wall mount in the front and shelf mount in the rear. Since the only cables are the power cord just unplug and move to the correct location. Easy peazy!
Suprisingly great sound comes from a very shallow speaker housing. While each of the speakers is shallow they have a fairly decent size. I have all of mine set up as shelf mounted since my home theater furnature is more traditional with tall shelving units and a spanning shelf and cabinet under in the center for the TV. I think I would have wall mounted the fronts if I had more modern furniture. The brackets swap easy enough if you transition at a later date. I'm hanging on to the wall mount hardware brackets just in case.
Other than the 4 speakers with mounting hardware and the power cables for each of the speakers you get a hub that connects to the TV via HDMI (arc preferred) but you also have options to connect via bluetooth. Download the Bravia Home Theater app from you friendly neighborhood app store, connect the power cable and power up the hub and don't forget to plug in each of the speakers.
Setup from here gets even easier with the app. You are stepped through network setup, making sure the speakers are correctly positioned and the next step of the app setting optimal volume for each speaker depending on where you are listening from. This makes sure that the sound is balanced and you aren't overpowered by one speaker.
Once you run through the initial setup you can fine tune the rear speaker volume or adjust the bass more to your liking. There are other features that I haven't started messing with but I do miss the extra thump of a subwoofer which there are two models from Sony that are compatible. I'll be making a run to my local Best Buy to grab the 200W wireless sub. And once I do it's so easy to add the sub with the Bravia app.
I also love that the hub allows connection via Bluetooth. It was easy for me to shift from TV input to streaming audio from my phone. The app allows you to easily switch input to the hub. Impressive, all without a big stereo receiver.
The only negative I have is that the app requires a Sony account. If you already have one or Playstation account those are consolidated but I'm getting more and more annoyed when electronics require accounts. Every week if not day we hear of data breaches so the less platforms that require accounts the better for me anyway. The price is a bit on the steep side at $2500, but since you are getting 4 great speakers and a hub the price of a comparable traditional home theater system could run you much more with equavilent results.
Otherwise I can find nothing to complain about and plenty to rave about. Two solid thumbs up.

I have been testing out the Sony Bravia Theatre Quad for a few days now and I have been completely blown away by its performance. The Quad had serious shoes to fill as its predecessor was a highly beloved system.
Setup:
Setting up the Quad was very easy and straightforward. Some people have mentioned issues setting up through Bravia connect, I didn’t have any of those. All four speakers were recognized immediately. I did have a Sony SW3 subwoofer from a previous system that I was able to use with the Quad, and the app recognized that almost immediately as well. A little trick if its not being recognized, turn the sub off, then hit the sync button right next to the power button. The Quad system did its thing by scanning the acoustics of the room and using my cellphone as a mic to determine where I plan to sit the most often. This was cool to see unfold, and it really makes a difference.
Use:
I have a 2 year old Sony OLED 77 inch so everything kind of just worked. I can’t speak to experiences outside of the Sony ecosystem, but for my use, it has been flawless. The normal TV remote controls the volume of the Quads still, and I was able to use the included AUX to connect my tv to the system as a center channel. Some online reviews say this is unnecessary, I agree. I tried it both ways and honestly, you aren’t missing anything. That’s a good thing. If you have a different TV maker, don’t be worried, the Quad will still blow you away and you aren’t missing out. The Quad did come with its own little remote which has some quick useful functions such as night mode, and voice mode. Both do what you’d expect. Night turns down the sub and makes it a bit quieter, and Voice amplifies the vocals on screen. This is one of the best features. I have been watching Sopranos for the first time, and that feature actually helps me avoid subtitles! I am excited to keep experimenting with Voice as it might make subtitles go the way of the dodo for me.
Sound:
Ok, what does it sound like? Well, I did what any normal person would do. I went on Disney+ and put on Star Wars the Phantom Menace for the pod racing scene. Duh. By the way, that movie has Dolby Atmos support so it made the most out of the Quad’s abilities. Let me tell you, it freaked me out at first because it sounded like the pods were actually flying past me left and right! It felt so real and accurate to what was happening on the screen it was incredible. I cannot wait to try gaming on this. I have not had the chance, but I am positive that it will be incredible. Besides the marketed 360 degree sound, all the other stuff was great. Sound was so clear, crisp, and loud. A good way to think about it is remember when you first went from your TV speakers to a soundbar? Then maybe a soundbar with rear speakers? This is the next jump.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the Sony Bravia Theatre Quad lives up to the hype of its predecessor. The setup was easy, and the system seamlessly integrated with my existing Sony TV. The sound quality is phenomenal, with crystal clear dialogue and immersive 360-degree surround sound that puts you right in the middle of the action. Whether you’re watching movies, playing games, or just enjoying TV, the Bravia Theatre Quad elevates your home entertainment experience to a whole new level. If you’re looking for the absolute best in home theater sound, the Bravia Theatre Quad is the clear winner. Just be prepared to be amazed.
Hi TechNinja, Awesome! We're very happy to hear that you're blown away with the ease of setup and use, immersive 360 surround sound experience, clear and crisp audio quality, and overall performance of the Sony BRAVIA Theater Quad. Thanks for sharing this positive feedback! -Sam
