The SONY Bravia Theatre Quad, the follow-on to the "HT-A9" series, offers a seriously impressive sound experience with a new physical design. While continuing the central transmitter to wireless speaker architecture, the circular speakers have been replaced with a slightly smaller, "pancake" format that makes their placement more like conventional speakers, although in a much slimmer package. In spite of that smaller size each of the four speakers includes 4 drivers and that translates into some serious punch! The unpacking and setup were straight forward. The only assembly required is the attachment of your preferred mounting hardware. The box contains both a circular foot for mounting on a stand or table top and wall brackets. So, you can even mix-and-match if that best meets your needs! Your initial concerns about might be how it would affect the sound field but that is where the SONY magic starts! Somehow SONY has figured out a system where you can truly place the speakers just about anywhere (within reason) and it will figure out how to adjust the sound from each speaker to create an amazingly enveloping surround experience. My room is a torture case for most soundbar like solutions - vaulted ceilings, irregularly shaped and only enclosed on three sides! Yet, the Quad system has managed to create a very convincing bubble to my listening position! I have watched movies True HD, DTS-X, several Dolby Atmos modes, 5.1, 7.1 and even some older movies in stereo and all have been impressive. I also watched a variety of streaming content with compressed audio modes and the Quad does a very good job. I have listened to several sample HD audio music pieces (Dolby, FLAC, LCPM, Stereo) and the system sounds very good. The unit creates a very good, enveloping, sound with convincing virtual channels and has plenty of volume for my listening need. Replacing my soundbar with the single "attachment" transmitter box also gives a much cleaner and more compact look to my TV area. The unit only includes two HDMI connections and one of those is for the eARC connection so I did lose one connection compared to my previous setup but I was able to rework my connections so that everything I need still has a place to connect. As for the downsides, there are a few. The virtual center channel is not quite as robust as I would like and there is really no detailed way to tweak the individual channels. There is no equalizer capability, only a "Sound field" toggle, a "Voice" enhancement feature and a "Night" mode. These effects are effective if a bit subtle. The provided remote is extremely small, lightweight and is not back-lit. The app is straight forward but adds little additional functionality. I am hoping future FW updates may add some additional features. Finally. although the speakers do deliver a decent amount of bass, the unit would definitely benefit from the addition of a sub woofer. Unfortunately SONY chose to make that an additional purchase which seems a bit odd at this price point. All said, the Quad's abilities outweigh the negatives and I will be retiring my old premium soundbar for this one! It is definitely worth including on your short list but DO plan on spending the extra money for one of SONY's wireless subs!

I’ve always been an old school, tower speaker guy, so I thought there was no way that these ‘little’ speakers could fill the shoes of my trusty old towers. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Before you even get them set up, you’ll notice that the packaging is immaculate. Each of the four speakers is in its own section of the box. Within each section is everything associated with a single speaker. Setup is very simple and you probably won’t even need to look at the instructions. Pull the main unit out & connect it to power and HDMI. Then pull each speaker out, attach the stand (or use the included wall mount configuration) with a couple of screws, and plug each speaker into AC power. NO speaker wires to run. Zero. Not even for the fronts. Fire up the app (yes, you need the app) and it will walk you through the rest. Start to finish in less than 30 minutes. The 360 Spatial Sound Mapping is simply amazing. I’ve had several surround sound setups over the years, but none have had this level of immersion. There was one simple scene in The Bourne Identity that caught my attention where birds were flying around in an open field; somehow these speakers made it sound like the birds were actually above you, not just around you. And although there’s no dedicated center speaker, it manages to keep the dialog in focus surprisingly well. I’ve had other systems that required me to turn the volume up to adequately hear the dialog, only to be almost deafened when an action sequence comes in. It is hands down one of the best sounding home theater systems I’ve ever experienced. That being said, if you’re one who likes foundation shaking bass, you may want to spring for one of the compatible subwoofer units as this does not come with a sub. For everyone else, unless you're getting a package discount or something, give it a shot without the sub first; you might be pleasantly surprised. Personally I like a little more bass, so I’m considering adding the sub. Music source connectivity is so-so with support for AirPlay, Spotify Connect, and Bluetooth. I don’t have any Apple devices, so I couldn’t test AirPlay, but I was able to use Spotify Connect and Bluetooth with no issues at all. Overall it’s an amazing system and has brought our movie watching experience to a new level. Highly recommend.

Be prepared to be amazed by the Sony Bravia Quad!

I’m coming from an older Pioneer Elite 9.1 receiver sc-67 and some good la acoustic speakers. I can say without a doubt this SONY quad is comparable and in some ways even sounds better. That I was not expecting at all. I wanted to keep my system but my spouse wanted a cleaner set up without so many speakers and wires. After kicking and screaming I gave in. I can truly say this SONY Bravia theatre Quad is the real deal and very comparable even to my old $4000 system. The only two gripes I have are I wish I had more controls in the app like the pioneer receiver had. I also with it had more hdmi ports, and an option to put a second subwoofer, or open it up to be able to use other subwoofers with it. The magic of the phantom speaker is pretty amazing and does what the Pioneer did with their version called virtual height ands sides speakers. It is only a matter of time before this type of system surpasses even an audiophiles expensive sound system. This was a had pill for me to swallow, but this system is amazing! My spouse was always asking me to use the emphasis and dialogue enhancement on the pioneer control app, but with the quad we have very rarely had to use the voice mode. I highly recommend getting one of the compatible subwoofers as you will be missing out on the full potential this system has to offer if you don’t have one. I have this paired with the Sony SW-5 subwoofer and it definitely takes it to that next level theater quality. People often wonder what the difference between the Sony Quad and the model that this replaced which was called the Sony HT-A9. These new quad speakers are flat and while the old ones looked more like canisters. The new Quad speakers also have 4 speakers in them vs the old one which had three. This means you get a total of 4 speakers in each of the 4 speakers giving you a total of 16 total speakers. The Quad also has a better wireless antennas which are 2.5 more range and have channel hopping features to prevent dropouts. The previous HT-A9 model featured a function that analyzed the relative positions of its four speakers and adjusted the sound field accordingly. This ensured an immersive spatial audio experience, even when the speakers were not placed in ideal locations. With the new BRAVIA Theatre Quad model, two additional measurement functions have been introduced. The first function evaluates the acoustic environment of the speaker placement and adjusts the audio accordingly. It detects and compensates for changes caused by room elements such as furniture, curtains, and wall materials, each of which affects sound differently. For instance, in a concrete room where sound tends to reverberate, the system can reduce excessive echoes for a more balanced audio experience. The second function adjusts the sound based on the listener’s position. By having the user hold their smartphone at their usual viewing spot, the system can optimize the audio specifically for that location, ensuring a tailored listening experience. Psychoacoustic technology creates the illusion of spatial sound for the listener, but its effectiveness varies from person to person and is limited to certain areas. In contrast, 360 SSM technology generates a true sound field, providing a more consistent and immersive experience for a wider audience. This makes it ideal for those who were never fully satisfied with virtual surround sound or those looking to enjoy a rich spatial audio experience with family and friends. Virtual surround sound relies on psychoacoustic technology to create the illusion of spatial audio for the listener. However, its effectiveness varies from person to person and is limited to specific areas. In contrast, 360 SSM technology generates an actual sound field, providing a more immersive and consistent experience across a wider area. Those who have been unsatisfied with virtual surround sound or who want to enjoy a true spatial audio experience with family and friends should definitely try 360 SSM. Sony’s 360 Sound Spatial Mapping (360 SSM) is an innovative technology that integrates distance measurement, which detects the relative positions of speakers and their distance from the ceiling, with a physical sound field reproduction method known as “monopole synthesis.” By combining sound waves from multiple real speakers positioned around the listener, it creates realistic audio from phantom speakers—virtual sound sources placed in optimal positions based on the content format. The changes go beyond just the design. To create an even more immersive spatial sound experience. Sony completely reengineered the internal structure of the speakers. They asked: How should the speakers be positioned to maximize the potential of 360 SSM and enhance the sense of space? How can we make dialogue clearer and more distinct? These questions sparked deep discussions among the development team, encouraging collaboration across disciplines to push the boundaries of innovation. Believe the hype because this little system is amazing with movies, and it also brings your music to life as well. I am rediscovering the joy of movies and the immersion that this system brings to them. From an audiophile like myself I can say I’m pretty happy and beyond amazed at what Sony has created with there amazing 360 audio sound and engineering.

Right front speaker won't connect! Instead of returning it to the store I sent it to Sony to get repaired. Over a month later they just sent it back to me with the same problem. It cannot be set up and Sony's customer service has been giving me the run around and now I am stuck with an over priced system that I have never got to use.

    A world apart from soundbars

Verdict. The Sony Bravia Theater Quad is sleek, powerful, immersive, easy to install, easy to use, and highly enjoyable. It could benefit from a subwoofer, but most users will be more than completely satisfied with the package as is, especially if coming from a soundbar. Initial impressions. I expected a much larger box for a home theater system. The box is heavy for it’s size. Unpacking is easy. Speakers have a premium feel and look great. I love the grey cloth material. The room we used for this system has beige walls, but it still looks great. Grey is a popular paint color, so perhaps for many people these speakers will blend-in even better. I love the thin form factor because they are less noticeable when hanging on a wall, or when standing on furniture. Setup. Physical installation was relatively easy for us because we only needed to mount two of the four speakers. The speakers are labelled for the correct position, so no chance of mix up if you are paying attention. We installed this in a small-ish room with a projector, so we had to mount the two front speakers lower than most people would so that we could still use most of the wall space for the projector screen. I significantly dislike the power cables hanging from the mounted speakers, but at least the cables are white. We mounted the speakers right at 8 feet apart. Then we positioned the two back speakers on a built-in cabinet on the back wall, about 6 feet apart. Thanks to two plugs built into the built-in, the back speakers look fantastic. The fact that the speakers are wireless (no speaker wire required to go back to the control box), you can really position the speakers anywhere without installation headaches. Completing the installation requires the Sony Bravia app, a Sony account (I already had one), and using your smartphone for calibration. Setup was mostly smooth but took a little bit of time. App. I have two Sony apps now… Not sure why this setup couldn’t be managed in the Sony Sound app. The app is mostly helpful for setup but there isn’t a whole lot of added functionality or tools. Sound. The Sony Quad replaced a soundbar and subwoofer system from a different brand. While I wish this system came with a subwoofer (especially at this price point and for the targeted customers), the systems performs well without one… but still leaves me wanting just a bit more because I had a subwoofer before. Sound for movie watching is exceptional: balanced, immersive, dynamic, clear, and powerful. For content with Dolby Atmos… Wow!! I can’t imagine a better experience. The speakers are plenty loud, and the four-speaker configuration allows for better sound quality at lower volume. A world apart from soundbars… I was quite happy with my soundbar and sub for years, but I could not go back now. I did not test these speakers for music since we don’t listen to music in the movie room. Things I love: - Exceptional sound - Incredible immersive feel (especially with Dolby Atmos) - Beautiful slim design and great fabric color and feel - Wireless sound connectivity - Small but functional remote control Things I don’t love: - The app could offer a lot more functionality and tools - At this price point, it should include a subwoofer Conclusion. If you are looking for an exceptional and immersive surround-sound movie theater experience that is easy to install in your home, I highly recommend the Sony Bravia Theater Quad. While pricey and lacking a subwoofer, the sound delights in providing an amazing home theater experience that will please most people. I highly recommend this theater system.
