Many years ago I was a DJ. Back when people played records and house parties were king. I had purchased a set of Sony MDR-V700 headphones. These were the industry standard for DJ's and audiophiles. I still own and use these headphones. They are close to 20 years old and still rival even the best headphones on the market today. I stopped being a DJ quite a while back and I have tried to find a comparable set of headphones to use when at the gym. The MDR-V700 headphones are bulky and have an insane 10' coiled cord. Not too great for the treadmill. These Sony's are absolutely the closest match to my old trusty set that I have found. The sound is EXCELLENT! Bass is punchy when needed and gets to the bottom of the spectrum without being muddy. The highs are crisp without being tinny and mid range vocals come through nicely. As well these puppies can crank to the point of pain! I don't recommend this, but the sound is still clean even when pushed. Best Buy has these for a great price and they are well worth it. Get these instead of Beats, you won't be disappointed.

They don't sound that great and feel cheap. Bought them as a back up pair and that's all they are good for

I received these as a Christmas gift and when I first tried them I thought they were terrible. They had very little bass and everything sounded weak. I decided I was going to return them and was researching what headphones I wanted to get. When I saw all of the reviews on YouTube and headphone websites about how the Sony MDR-V55's are so great and people calling them Beats killers, I thought I had a defective pair. Then I came across an article about a burning-in period for headphones, basically they get better after they get used. It was Christmas day and Best Buy was closed anyway, so I qued up some bass heavy music on Rhapsody and just let it play for several hours at a level a little higher than I would normally listen. When I came back and listened to my music, it was night and day difference. These simply sound killer now with nice tight and strong bass and super clear mids and highs. I did go to Best Buy and listen to all of the headphones just to make sure I wouldn't want a different pair even if I spent more money, I keep the Sony's. Sound to me is most important but I also like how they are light, comfortable and somewhat compact. Another plus for me is the headband has numbered marks and stops so you know each side is adjusted down the same amount. I just listen to music and play my guitar through my iPad with them so a inline mic or long cord was not a factor either way for me.

I brought these on Valentines for my fiance who is a DJ. They worked great while he practiced but when he went to do his first party using them in March, during the party one headphone went out. Hasnt barely been 30 days. They are going back to the store!

I work in the radio field and I was looking for a cheaper, yet durable, pair of headphones that I could use both for on-air purposes and just for listening to music on my way to class. These headphones are great because of their ability to fold up. The swiveling earcups is actually a really nice feature.
The cord is on the shorter side, but it's still a very typical size of 3.9 ft.. It is a flat cord, which is hard to get use to, but I personally like it.
I recommend these because they super comfortable which tends to be hard to find in over-the--ear phone. Plus is sound is really a great quality, especially for headphones under $100.

First off I want to make clear that these are not DJ headphones, they are DJ STYLE Studio headphones. And they are great. I got them because I was on the market for a new pair headphones to use in for pretty much anything like recording, mixing, playing games, listen to music on MP3. And these are great for all that.
I was a little worried that they would sound the same as my other pair of headphones since there was only $20 difference, I figured it would be just for style. But I was wrong, these sound as good as they look. I can hear everything from high notes to low end notes. And the best part is the more you use them the better they sound. I had them for three months and only found two drawbacks: 1) the headphones didn't come with the case, but I don't really need it, and since most studio headphones cost $250 to $2,000, I'm not complining. 2) There is a bit of discomfert in my ears after about two hours of use on my left ear, and it leaves it sore. But if you change the postion every once in a while it's alright. So I can live with that considering there only $100. guess the money only went into quality because I had a little accident the day after I bought them
I tingled the cord with a chair and they unpluged from my MP3 and fell to the floor, I thought they broke because they look and feel delicate, but I was happy to find that nothing happened to them.
Bottom line if you want a good pair of studio headphones that look good and sound good at about 1/3 the price of other studio headphones then these are it. if they ever breake I'll buy them again

Very High Quality Headphones!

These headphones are awesome! I listen to metal, or screamo and everything in between. Not country, or rap so much. Rap, hip-hop every once in a while, yes. Anyways, when i first listened to a couple songs i couldn't believe how crisp and clear the sound was! I can hear things i couldn't hear before. Certain sounds, guitar strings, drum sounds. The vocals are the focal point in these headphones in my opinion, but don't think these don't have bass. They have plenty of that. When i listen to Hardstyle(techno) music, which is music ALL about bass, it(bass) sounds so deep. Without distorting at high volumes. Good thing, considering i like to listen to all music at very high volumes. I definately recommend them. For $59.99, they are a steal! Btw, the cord feels so cool lol. Nice building quality as well. No cheap feeling. Cushions on the ear pieces are so comfy and squishy.

I compared these with a few sets of headphones I owned, and the headphones of my friends, these headphones had the best volume, quality, and bass of all, amazing product but then again you can't go wrong with sonys. I love the quality of these with my VAIO E series.

These headphones are great. They are replacing my Sennheiser hd 205. The bass is great even on portable devices. They are very comfy and stylish as well. The cable is a bit short, but since it's flat it almost never tangles. They also adjust nicely to most head sizes. I highly recommend these headphones.

I agree with Mankus 100%, I got a pair of the V55 to replace my XB500 under warranty yesterday. I did my research on them a little and thought they were weren't worth $100 at Target. So I got the headphones and tried them out shortly afterwards. 10 minutes later I had a sad face because it lacked in bass. Even my own mother tried them out and she was more interest in my old XB500 compared to the V55 It did provide great clarity and crisp sound but I miss the bass from my old pair of headphones. I would recommend this pair of headphones for individuals that want a pair of mid range headphones with less bass for a reasonable price. I plan on keeping these and also purchasing the XB400 tomorrow in hopes to getting something relatively close to the bass quality that my XB500 provided me.

Great Set of Phones for the Price

Just picked up this set of phones today to replace the MDR-XB500 set that I unfortunately left in a rental car. Been looking for a comparable set and after many YouTube reviews, I decided to go with these. Few years back when I got the XB500 model I was able to listen to the Dre Beats and Skullcandy models at the same time and they blew them away. With these, it's no different. The mids are better but I liked the bass on the XB500s better. The sound on these are crisp. The Beats Pro are definitely made for studio with an added amplifier. These are great for general use. I listen to all forms of music except country and it brings the sound to life. These are a definite winner for the $100 price. Hope this helps anyone considering these phones.

These headphones are a great replacement for the Sony XB series. These have bumping bass that compares well to the XB500's as well as a great range of mids. These headphones have a great stylish look to them that I think is just as good as the studio beats by dre but more compact. They have sound quality and noise isolation that compares to the beats as well. These are a great buy for people on a budget and will surely not disappoint.

Just recently bought these Sony's and so far I'm pretty impressed with the sound quality. I checked out all the brands BB had available and it was a toss up between the Bose and Sony headphones. They both had similar sound, the Bose sounding a little more crisp but also $60 more. Beats had a little to much bass for my taste since I listen to a variety of music. As for comfort, the pads fit over the ears quite well. I have pretty big ears. If you don't feel like spending $100+, these are an excellent choice.

I tried every headphone the store had on Demo! You name it, I tried it. I couldn't believe the sound these put out! I then thought, great these will cost 300 bucks. I looked down and about fell over backwards!!! Under 80 bucks!!! What???? The sound these produce were in the top two I listened too, next to the $300+ Bose, these were number two!! Good bass sounds, good mid and high. It's the total package with these!! In fact, I bought the last TWO pairs! My wife got a pair, just cause. She listened to them and said,"wOw"!! Save your money and get these! You won't be disappointed. I'm picky with my headphones, I'm very happy! Flat red power cord with these. Very stylish if you like black and red!

Bought these headphones for my wife and she couldn't love them more. I find them slightly too small for my ears, they cause a bit of discomfort when worn for long periods of time, but the sound quality is quite good for the price. Would definitely buy again.

Compare these Sonys to SkullCandy Skullcrushers and the Sony are an amazing upgrade. I returned my SkullCandy ones for these. I'm a musician and the sound quality that comes out of them is great for how much you pay. If you don't want to buy beats audio for 300 dollars, but want great sound, get these for around 80 bucks. The only thing I don't like is the short cord. These have a 3.5mm jack. I plug them into an electronic drum kit, and even with a 1/4 inch adapter the sound is excellent.

Nice, inexpensive musical headphones

My intent was to upgrade from some Koss Porta Pros that I use while running/treadmilling. My initial thought were some full size cans to run to my Denon stereo, and I was leaning toward some Sennheiser HD280's. Then I shifted focus towards efficient cans to use with my IPod/Fii0 mini amp. Walking around and sampling the various headphones, I fell in awe of the Logitech UE6000's($200). I also liked the Bose AE's($135). Purely by accident I came across the Sony V55/XB600 display and thought what the heck? Gotta admit I was pleasantly surprised. The XB600's sounded good but the extra bass was a turn off for my music preference. i like various rock (Metallica, Foo Fighters) > mellencamp/Springsteen > various country artists. The extra bass would be great for techno/hip hop but I don't want to drown out mids/treble. The V55's allow all the music to come thru and really shine with the Fii0 amp. Excellent headphones for the $80 but I will be watching for a sale during the next 30 days to get a price adjustment :). Maybe apply it to an extended warranty ...

Good sound, painful fit
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Didn't have any issues with the sound or styling of the headphones but after extended use (2+ hours) they become extremely painful to wear. They fit tight, helping to prevent them from falling off but the small size of the ear cup/pads caused intense pressure on the ears making extended use highly unpleasant.
The flat cord was a problem for me. If it was wrapped up or situated in any way other than perfectly straight, it would hold that position, spiral and tangle itself.
Did not do a good job of blocking out external sounds. On anything but the loudest of volumes sound was not blocked at all. Because of the small ear cup it won't fit even almost around your ear, making the "around-the-ear" design functionally useless.
If you're looking for decent sound and good styling, but you don't listen for extended periods then these may work for you. If you regularly partake in 2+ hour listening/mixing/monitoring then these aren't for you. Find something with a good closed back, around the ear design that won't put so much pressure on your ears.

Great set of headphones

These are great. I'm a saxophone player and I have a tremendous amount of Classical Saxophone music... I can hear the texture of the musician as they play, and everything is crisp and clean. Then I can go straight into Red Hot Chili Peppers and hear Flea thumping away. Great set of headphones... they sound good w/ everything.
A bit of sound leakage would be the only real con.... If you wear them for a few hours straight you might get uncomfortable... but only slightly.... and its probably not best to wear any headphones for that long at a time, so I use that as my signal to take a break :)
