The person who helped me, based on my stated requirements, was really supportive and didn't try to dissuade me. Was a good shopping experience.

Basic DVD player

TV-dependent CD player

It does that, with good sound, but for fast forward, slow or fast reverse, and minute or counting display, you have to play it thru a tv, which I don't want to do. Also I was surprised to find it doesn't have an HDMI output. I did not try a DVD in it as I already have a good Blu-Ray DVD player.
