Not Worth the Price

Bought a pair of these to use on airplain flights. They were only slightly better than the ear buds that came with my Ipod. The noise canceling swithch did not seem to make any difference when it was on or off. I would not recommend these. They just are not worth the money. Put the money toward a pair of Bose headphones, you will be much more satisfied.

Does a decent job within constraints of technology

I've been using noise "isolating ie passive" earbuds for years, they do great but looking for something even better. The ideal situation for "noise cancelling ie active" is continuous sounds like from engines - Plane, boat, train, bus, etc.
I'm very pleased. I'm a ship's captain (constant loud engine noise) and sleep with these on. What a treat to be able to listen to music at a modest volume and be comfortable enough to sleep with them in my ears. No need for earplugs anymore.
Most reviewers that have bad experience don't understand the limitations of the technology. Do some simple research to understand what you are buying. You wouldn't put diesel in a gasoline hybrid car just because its sold at the gas station right?
The lack of microphone for hands free use is the biggest short coming.

Terrible Design!

Bought these after purchasing the Skullcand Titan $50 pair, which I wore for one day and returned because they hurt my ears after 20 min and had NO noise cancellation. Store rep recommeded these.
I opened box and tried them on and they sound good, and did all the noise cancellation as promised but the design is terrible. The corde is twice as long as it needs to be and halfway in middle of it is a power unit that holds a battery for the so called noise cancellation switch which is useless, adds weight and pulls the headphones out of your ear.
It has a clip that you can put on your belt but they didn't make the cord long enough from the power unit to your ear unless you are like 5" tall. I'm 5'10". Tried these out for a week trying to get over the cord issue but I couldn't. Dont buy these there are other models that sound better for same price and dont have the terrible design flaws.

I have never purchased noise-cancelling headphones or earbuds. I was going on an international flight and decided to take the plunge. Since I had not done thorough research beforehand, I went for Sony which I generally have been very happy with. As soon as I put them on at home I was initially disappointed since it didn't seem to cancel a lot of noise. But I liked the quality of sound and really loved their comfort. But once I used them on the plane and hit the noise-cancelling switch, although I could still hear conversations and other noise in the background, it cancelled enough ambient noise and turned down the volume of conversations just enough to make a difference. Also, I use the earbuds as my primary set now due to their far superior comfort and much better quality than the regular pair that come with an iPod. For its price, I thought it was worth the purchase.

Great in-ear active noise cancellation

I own two other high quality over-ear active noise cancellation headphones but was looking for something portable, in-ear, and equally adept at noise canceling. Another key criteria was that it should be comfortable and stay in the ear and not fall out.
This piece meets all these. The in-ear buds fit snug and I have often not found the need to turn on the active noise cancellation. Good sound reproduction.
I wish it had a better wire management mechanism between the battery case and the ear-buds. The other end going to the 3.5mm jack has a rubber looper.

I love this earbuds, compared to the more expensive Sony noise cancelling ear buds I had seen, these do a great job, nice and sleek looking , comfortable, they have the different size buds that come in the nice bag to carry them in, also you get a airplane adaptor inside.

Okay but no volume control

This was on sale so I bought them to replace my philips N/C earbuds that I've worn out.
Overall it's more comfortable and does reduce background noise but didn't realize there was no volume control which comes in handy when travelling on a plane. On the philips you can adjust the volume without taking your mp3 player out of your pocket or your earbuds. This one I'd have to remove the earbuds each time to listen to an announcement or the FA.

Good sound and value, somewhat uncomfortable

These are essentially the best sound cancelling earbuds for the price. They are slightly uncomfortable in that you can definitely feel them while you are wearing them and take some getting used to. The sound quality is pretty good, although I have never used any extremely fancy sound equipment. The sound cancelling works especially well in vehicles. However, when carried around, the switch on the sound cancelling device has been turning on, which drained the battery when I hadn't looked at for a few days. Fortunately, it only takes an AAA.

I fly quite a bit for both business and leisure purposes. Everyone I talk to raves about the Bose QCII but I can not stand the size/weight of the headphones. After trying the noise-cancelling in-ear setup from Sony I can report that I am very pleased with the purchase.
The ear tips are comfortable with multiple sizes to choose from so a good fit is almost a given. When you switch on the noise canceling feature, they instantly going to work balancing out the background noise. I have this particularly good at drowning out airplane engine noise. However, the noise-canceling feature WILL NOT make up for a screaming toddler next to you.
Overall I am very pleased with the sound quality and noise canceling capabilities of these headphones. For the $$$, it was a good purchase!

Don't Buy

These are $70 so I expected a decent pair of earphones but these were a big dissapointment. The noise cancelling box is big, unappealing, and it always has to be clipped on to something so it's inconvenient, not to mention it looks bad. I would never wear these outside. The length of the wire from the box to your head when on, is too short so it HAS to be clipped on to your waist or shirt or some wierd place. The noise cancelling isn't that great either so pretty much the box is pointless. Some people prefer not overwhelming bass but these are just too weak. The bass is TERRIBLE and the sound quality is not good at all. The Sony premium earbuds (which are $50) have a stronger nicer bass with a lot better sound quality. The wires on these also feel really plasticy and cheap compared to the premium earbuds and the earbuds are really big. So dont get these. If they were worth $30, sure but not $70.

Decent noise canceling that doesn't excel at music

I got these so I wouldn't have to bring my big "can" headphones on a long international flight. These headphones seem to have a good balance of price and features. The buds certainly do reduce the sound but don't eliminate them. However, on a long flight even a small reduction is appreciated.
Sounds quality is decent. A little better than your average pack ins but you're getting these for the noise reduction abilities. However, you can certainly do better if you aren't looking for noise reduction.
A plus is the included battery, replacements tips and carrying pouch. It is nice and compact for travel but it is not my choice for every day use.

I have another sony headset that provides a more crisp high frequency sound. I guess the noise cancelling impacts some how the spectrum even when switched off.
It reduces some of the noise, specially humming noises from Gamming Compuer fans.. :)
Good enough but can be better.

Decent ear buds

These Sony ear buds are pretty good. There are better out there of course, but for the price, they're not bad. They do fit tight and supposed to provide noise canceling, but I haven't had a chance to see if it works yet. I will see if they dampen out the noise of the jet while I'm traveling to Dallas next month. Hope they provide some noise canceling effect as advertised.

The noise cancelling could be better, but for ear buds pretty good.
If you're looking to block noise, get regular headphones. But if you want light weight, good sound and keeping light background noise out, these are working well for me.

Noise reduction awkwardly placed

Comfort ok but the noise reduction module is placed awkwardly on the cord. Too low to clip to pants and not high enough to clip to collar. Ended up bunching shirt together and clipping to that. Doesn't always stay clipped there though and the weight pulls the buds out. Frustrating for the money spent.

These ear buds are just the right size when traveling. They do not have the sound quality as the more expensive ones but they are not bulky in a back pack.

Awesome Reproduction and Bose like noise canceling

I am very picky on my choice of ear buds. I have been through many pairs the last couple of years and was about to purchase the Klipse S4. On a trip to purchase the S4s, I noticed the Sony MDR-NC13. My first reaction was no way sony was worthy of the asking price but then I remembered a set of over the ear phones from the late 90s that I really liked.
Long story short the noice cancelling is "almost" on par with the much more expensive Bose buds. And the reproduction of these buds is outstanding as well. I would have like a slight more highs but the natural sounding hits the sweet spot. Bass is clean and tight and doesn't require you to jab these things deep into your ear canal to hear it. And if you do feel the need to jab these things in your ear the buds are completely comfortable. Over a period of three hours my ears don’t hurt when I remove the buds. Working around mechanics using air tools and hammers these buds would satisfy the casual user any day. The weird one side longer than the other cable I despise with a passion but somebody must like it.
All said i am very impressed .

Bought these after I landed at my destination a few weeks ago because I tried to watch a movie on my ipad during the flight and couldn't hear what was going on. On the way home I watched the same movie and could head exactly what was being said all the time. When you cut the noise canceling on you can hear the background noise fade away and when you cut them off it is very obvious that they do their job. I have never owned another set of noise-cancelling headphones before but have to say that these are great for airplanes and for just general listening. I currently use them almost every day in the office and they block out alot of the office noise as well. Great headphones for the money! Only reason durability isnt a 5 is because I have only had them for a few weeks....

I returned it as soon as i could.
I didn't hear the noise cancelling kick in and the battery was annoyingly hanging in the middle of my chest which got in the way when I was working on my laptop. It would pull the buds out of my ears and was just not worth the money to me. $80 or whatever it was was not worth it so I returned it within about a week or after two days of use. These things may be good for working out, giving the weight (battery) in the middle of the cord but the noise cancelling still didn't seem to do anything.

I bought these to take on a trip to Europe. Unfortunately, the sound quality and noise canceling wasn't much better than my Apple ear buds. On the plane I didn't notice any "noise canceling" qualities. The sound isn't bad for every day listening, but I couldn't see spending $70 for very little improvement from basic buds. I did return them and appreciate Best Buy's return policy.
In Sony's defense, I thought they were on par with the Bose earbuds. I didn't have much luck with those either. I think head phones are a better way to go for noise canceling - especially on airplanes.
