Great Focal Range Covering Standard Primes

Bought this lens to pair up with an A7CII since I was looking to pair the smaller body with a relatively smaller lens that I could keep attached during travel. Needless to say, I'm really impressed with the quality of the lens - both the build and the image it produces.
I'm not a pixel peeper, but I found the images to be incredibly sharp, even wide open. Autofocus worked like a charm when I took it for a spin at a recent car show. On the 50nm end, I found the image to match or exceed that of the 50mm f/1.8.
Since I tend to shoot 35mm and higher, the reverse barrel extension did not bother me at all since it was already at the focal length I default to in it's unextended state.
The major tradeoff here from the smaller prime lenses that Sony offers (24mm, 40mm, 50mm f/2.5G and even thr 50mm f/1.8) is that it is heavier even for being an already compact lens. That being said, it feels like it's built like a tank, and the heft gives the lens a sense of quality and durability.

Great alternative to the GM24-70 2.8(both the original and new one.
Image quality is hard to tell from the original GM24-70 2.8 minus the obvious 20mm at the long end but worth the size and weight savings, compared to the new one you do lose a bit of contrast with direct sunlight in the frame but otherwise image quality is hard to tell(at least in my 24MP a9iii body and my crop 26MP)
I plan to eventually pick up the G 16-25 2.8 to complete the set

For those cameras with crop mode or clear image zoom this lens is more than enough for most people. I already have a 24-70 so I needed another similar focal length for travel but I didn’t like how bulky the 24-70 is. This is the perfect size

Perfect to travel and every day stills and videos

I enjoy taking pictures and videos and having the right equipment helps me getting both done with not a lot of editing and the Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G lens does that for me. First the lens arrived nicely packaged in a recyclable box, and once out the box. It is pleasantly compact and lightweight to take it anywhere. It is a worthy standard zoom lens designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras and perfect for a-series body cameras.
The constant f/2.8 aperture provides amazing performance and it delivers excellent sharpness and clarity across the frame. Close-ups look smooth while showing amazing bokeh for that professional look. I am amazed how sharp and very nice detail it shows on stills.
The FE 24-50mm lens is compact (74.8mm x 92.3mm) and lightweight (440 g.) so I am taking it to my next trip in a month because I am planning on taking pictures all day long for a couple of weeks. I’ve taken it out for a few days now and I am happy with it. I also like that the lens is dust and splash resistant so it is something less to worry about.
The autofocus on the lens is exceptional; it does great on tracking while doing it fast and quietly.
And the lens is also great for capturing up to 4k videos while it supports different functions depending on the camera. The lens can be used in manual and autofocus mode with a simple switch.
Overall, the Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G lens is a great lens for photographers looking for a compact, high-performance standard zoom lens. Its excellent optical performance, build quality, and handling make it a great addition to any photographer’s equipment.

This Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 zoom lens is a welcome addition to the collection of lenses for my Sony camera and will likely become my go-to lens for local music shows, portraits, and product photography. The focal range is great because it’s wide enough for group shots, and close enough for portraits and product shots. I create photo and video social media content for multiple businesses so I’m always looking to upgrade my production equipment. I tested this lens out on a full frame Sony a7 iv and a crop sensor Sony a6500. I noticed right off the bat how sharp this lens is for still photography. Another much appreciated feature is that the 2.8 aperture does great in low light.
The scenes I chose for testing were a drive-in, studio portraits, and a flower garden, so the scenarios range from low-light to studio light environments.
1. The movie drive-in is a very low-light scenario so I’ll share a wide photo I took of all the cars in the lot in front of the big screen. The sky was actually much darker in real life than what the photo shows and I attribute this to the 12800 ISO - the Sony a7 iv and 24-50mm lens made a great pairing and really allowed all the light to come through at a lower shutter speed (0.3 sec for the night shot of the drive-in).
2. I took some self-portraits in my home studio with 3 lights: a key light, a fill light, and a color light for the background. The camera picked up wonderful colors and the lens was super sharp, especially when I purposefully pulled focus to my eyes. My studio space is very small so I got the best results when I was around 37mm. This is when I found the focus breathing while trying to find myself again as the subject, but I will say this is a challenge I’ve faced before when I’m working solo as the photographer and model. It was much easier to get the auto-focus to work quickly when I was photographing others.
3. The flower garden photos were taken around 6pm, so the sun was still out. I found the 2.8 aperture to offer a very tight field of view and a nice blurred background. I was able to open the aperture to get less blur when needed. I thought it offered great focus points.
I mostly shot stills with this lens, but I did shoot some video and I noticed that the auto-focus, while good at tracking, felt a little “breathy”. With subject movement, sometimes it took a second to refocus on faces again. I often found myself clicking on my face in the display to make sure it focused on my eyes when taking self-portraits. In my use-case, I ended up using my phone as a remote/monitor for the Sony a7 iv and was able to focus better that way because without it, the lens would lock focus on my face before I was in place for the photo.
The lens itself is comfortable to use. It’s easy to switch between manual and auto focus, and the 3 rings for focus, zoom, and aperture are really smooth. The aperture ring has a switch to turn the click on and off in case you’re needing the quietest experience possible for filming. For stills, I use the zoom and focus rings and tend to leave the aperture ring on auto to change the f-stop in-camera.
The Sony a7 iv is heavier than the a6500, but even with a beefier body, this lens is actually pretty lightweight and compact. I’m very much looking forward to taking this lens out on nature walks in the fall. I usually shoot with a 70-200mm (heavy), but I’ve been wanting a smaller zoom lens so the 24-50mm seemed like a great choice and it feels pretty light in my hand, especially paired with the a6500.
I would have liked for this lens to have a stabilization feature, so when I’m filming on the move I’ll have to rely on the camera’s stabilization. In my short time with this lens, I filmed on a tripod so all my shots were stable.
Overall, I’m very happy to have this Sony G standard 24-50mm lens. I will definitely be using this lens regularly on my Sony camera because it’s much easier having a zoom lens than switching between my 16mm and 30mm primes. I do like having my primes, but a zoom lens is just so much more convenient and having the quality of a Sony is perfect for my needs as a content creator.

A little over priced but a fantastic lens

The Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G lens is a remarkable piece of gear. What initially stood out to me was its portability. Despite being a constant f/2.8 zoom lens, it’s compact and lightweight, making it perfect for photographers who are always on the move or have limited space in their bag. Whether you’re out on the street, traveling, or just looking for a versatile everyday lens, this one is easy to carry around without weighing you down. My camera bag is pretty full already, so it’s nice to be able to add an f/2.8 lens with such a small footprint.
Build Quality
The build quality is great, as always with Sony’s G series lenses. It feels robust in hand, with smooth zoom and focus rings that provide just the right amount of resistance. One feature I really appreciate is the aperture ring. It has a satisfying, tactile feel, allowing for easy control over your f-stop settings. You can also switch it to a de-clicked mode, which is fantastic for video work when you need smooth, silent aperture adjustments.
Features
Another handy feature is the customizable focus hold button on the side of the lens. You can assign various functions to it through your camera’s menu, such as Eye AF or focus lock, which makes shooting much more efficient, especially in fast-paced scenarios where you need quick access to specific settings.
Performance
The focusing performance is outstanding. The lens uses a fast and accurate autofocus system that locks on to subjects with ease, even in challenging lighting conditions. I didn’t experience any noticeable focus hunting or missed shots, which is crucial for capturing those fleeting moments. The images are sharp and vibrant, with excellent detail and contrast from corner to corner.
Issues
One issue I personally had is the zoom ring direction. It’s opposite to what I’m used to with my other lenses, which led to some confusion initially. It’s not a dealbreaker, but if you’re switching between different lenses regularly, it might take a bit of time to adjust. I still find myself messing up the direction occasionally when I'm shooting.
Price
While it’s a fantastic lens, I do think it’s a bit pricey given the limited focal range. It covers a versatile range for many situations, but at the current price point, I can see it being a deterrent for some potential buyers who might be expecting more flexibility. If you’re primarily shooting in this range and value a compact design, it’s definitely worth considering. However, if you already own, say, a 24-70mm lens, you may not have a compelling reason to get the 24-50mm other than to save space.
Overall, the Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G is an excellent choice for those looking for a high-quality, portable, and fast lens. Its solid build, customizable features, and outstanding image quality make it a strong contender in the market. Just be prepared for a bit of a learning curve with the zoom direction and a potentially hefty investment for the limited focal range. If those aren’t dealbreakers for you, this lens will not disappoint.

What a great compact lens for both travel and vlogging! I am not a pixel peeper, but to my eyes the lens is sharp from edge to edge with impressive dynamic range for a lens this compact. The F2.8 maximum apeture makes shooting in low light situations a joy. Auto focus is fast and accurate. It's equally as good for video as for photos. Fast focus and silent zoom makes it easy to switch from photography to videography without stopping to change my lens. Because of the small size and weight and excellent image quality, this makes a great every day carry lens for street and travel photographers and as well as for content creators. It is wide enough to use indoors and the lens is fast enought that a large supplemental light set up is usually not needed, and the 50mm focal length is a classic for a street photography. In a pinch, it even makes a decent portrait lens. Unless you are dealing with special shooting conditions (sports or wildlife, for example) the focal range should cover most shooting situation. It is living on my camera, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

This is lens is perfect for what it is. small, compact, and lightweight with a great image. Perfect for travel or if you just want the best image as light as possible. there only a few times i find myself needing more reach but that can easily be compensated for if you go into aps c mode. Sacrificing that little bit of reach for something way lighter and A LOT cheaper than the 24-70 is worth it.

Great image quality and very compact size that seems to be tailor made for the A7C line of cameras. Yes, the range is limited and the zoom is backwards compared to most Sony cameras, but the overall quality is great and those factors are not a big deal once you start using the lens.

I love this lens already. I have the 40mm 2.8 and optical quality is similar. However I craved a more well rounded option for travel. If I'm going to only take one lens on a trip, it will be this one. It's about the same size as my 24mm 1.4 GM, maybe 5% smaller. Only gripe is the reverse zoom, where the 50mm focal length is the default position. I wish the 24mm position was the more compact one.

This lens is lightweight and sharp. Recently brought it on a family vacation and took photos. Photos came out really nice and sharp at 2.8 using 24 and 50mm most of the time. Lens is lightweight ans small so I didn’t mind carrying it all day. I also have the 24-105 and that was heavier and not so great in dim lighting condition.
