I've had a PS5 for years, and have recently started traveling a lot more. I really wanted to be able to still play some games, while sitting in airports, hotels, etc, and lugging around a PS5 isn't really an option. I didn't even realize the Portal existed, and was thrilled when I learned about it. I picked one up from Best Buy, and it arrived pretty quickly later. Turning it on, the quality and built is well in-line with what I'd expect from Sony. I connected to my home wifi, and then input my Playstation ID. I made sure remote play was enabled on the PS5, and we were quickly in business. Man, do I love being able to play on this thing! The controls feel just right at home as if I was playing my PS5. The screen is great. Nice and bright, and does a good job for a portable device. While Sony does market this for just largely using at home, I read about being able to use it remotely. Thankfully, I've also had great success with being able to do that too! We have a Comcast connection, and I've been able to connect to various wifi networks and be able to largely do this just fine. There have been the occasional time when it lagged so much that I wasn't even able to play remotely, but restarting the PS5 seems to usually do the trick for fixing that. I've been very happy with my Portal, and am sure glad Sony put this product out!

Couch Gaming And TV Watching Co-exist!

So I'll start off by saying this: I am not a dad. I don't have kids, but my girlfriend does spend a lot of time of YouTube. Sure, she could go to another room and has offered to do so, but I wanted to be able to play games on the couch in the same room as her while she watched whatever she wanted. A lot of people think the Portal is bad compared to something like the Steam Deck or any device capable of Remote Play. Long story short: For the price, you will not find a better device for playing your PS5 off of the TV screen. Sure, the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, or any number of other portable gaming PCs can do MORE, but they're also at least 2-3 times the cost. And when you look at something like the Backbone, the inclusion of an actual Dualsense and an 8" 1080p / 60Hz screen makes it an easy win for the Portal. So now, the cons: Even with a wired connection to the PS5 and my HDMI cable to in unplugged, there still can be some perceptible frame drops. I have fast internet but I also PC game so it's possible that I'm just more sensitive to dips in framerates. Also, don't buy this if your plan is to use it as a streaming device for anything but games. Apps like Netflix and pretty much anything from the "Media" tab will NOT stream to the Portal. Furthermore, if your PS5 goes into Rest Mode while a game is open the Portal will NOT be able to wake it from Rest Mode. You need to make sure everything is closed out before putting it into Rest Mode in order to wake it up with the Portal. If all that sounds okay to you, then I can highly recommend the PlayStation Portal! It's not too heavy, feels premium, and when you realize that a DualSense Edge controller is the same price, it doesn't sound bad. And as long as you have a good wi-fi connection, you can even play it away from home! Definitely pick one up to fill any gaps when your TV is in use.

Looks very fashionable and great feeling to hold it.Only problem is works well with stable wifi from 15mbps going up. so some phone networks might not work well with the device which will make it useless.

This purchase has been a very large leap 8n gaming for me. I know that this device is not a stand alone portable gaming device, but it has truly given me the ability to clear my back log of games. While at the same time allowing the rest of the family that same alloted time for shows or movies. A big win all around.

It is like you are playing your ps5 on this display literally. It’s a mirror image of your setup. Specifically when you are on the same network as your ps5. I haven’t tried it outside of my network.

Ever since the update I have been able to play it more. The ability to take it anywhere makes it a plus as well. I highly recommend anyone that doesn’t have it should definitely go get one, especially for the price.

Looks and feels great. Very convenient if you want to play in bed or want/need to play while others are using the TV. Just make sure you have fast, reliable WiFi and it will feel like a portable PS5.

    Great concept, poor connectivity

This product was a great idea, relatively compact, high-quality, awesome display. I even loved the fact that it was based on the dual sense controller, but that is where the good news ends. Activity on this device is poor at best. I have 500mb Internet in my home. I sat on my couch, 5 feet from the Wi-Fi router and about 8 feet from the PS5, which was hardwired to the router and the lag made gameplay unbearable. It was even worse when traveling. I would leave in my PS5 turned on and connected to the Internet. And then try to connect from a remote location with equally fast Internet, and the device would barely connect much less be playable. I sincerely hope that Sony can’t get these connection issues worked out because this will be a great alternative to lugging my PlayStation around with me when I travel for work. All of this said, I must go back to the beginning and say that the build quality is exceptional, feels great in hand with a stunning display. Just needs better, connectivity and better support on the PlayStation network.

I was apprehensive about buying this because I have the remote play app and a controller but once I used it I was blown away. Streaming works way better than an app and it is comfortable to hold. Only drawbacks: you have to have at least decent internet and the battery life is not the best. That said it’s great for streaming the ps5 especially if you want a second screen while watching tv or something

If you have a PS5, go for it! It’s awesome. If you don’t and are interested in it due to the ability to stream games from the cloud without a Ps5, just know it’s only their curated catalogue of games similar to GamePass with an upper end PSN subscription, except the games suck a lot more with mostly ancient niche titles.

Great device I'm liking the all black look of it. Work well have to have a strong internet connection to make if feel smooth when playing. Don't recommend on competitive PVP games but definitely recommend for PVE and solo games when just relaxing or you want to be away from where you usually game and lay down and play instead

PlayStation Portal: A Portable PS5 Powerhouse, But

The PlayStation Portal is a unique device that aims to bring the full PS5 experience to your hands. It's not a standalone console, but rather a dedicated streaming device that relies on your PS5 for processing power. So, how does it hold up? Let's dive in. Positives: Portability: This is the Portal's biggest strength. Playing demanding PS5 games on a large, comfortable screen anywhere in your home or even on the go is a truly liberating experience. Streaming Performance: Remote Play works surprisingly well, with minimal lag and latency even on strong Wi-Fi connections. The visual quality is impressive, often indistinguishable from playing directly on the PS5. Controller Integration: The built-in DualSense controller feels fantastic, with all the bells and whistles like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers intact. It's a seamless transition from the standard PS5 controller. PS Plus and Premium Integration: Accessing your PS Plus and Premium library is easy and convenient, opening up a vast library of games directly from the Portal. Negatives: Limited Functionality: The Portal is purely for streaming PS5 games. It can't access other apps, media services, or even basic functions like web browsing. This feels like a missed opportunity for a more versatile device. Wi-Fi Dependence: Your entire experience hinges on a good internet connection. Even a slight dip in Wi-Fi quality can lead to lag and stuttering, making it impractical for offline use. Lack of Bluetooth Audio: Surprisingly, the Portal doesn't support Bluetooth headphones, forcing you to use the built-in speakers or a wired headset. This feels like a major oversight for a device focused on portability and convenience. Price: At $200, the Portal isn't exactly cheap, especially considering its limitations. This might make it a tough sell for casual gamers or those who already own a good tablet or phone for Remote Play. Overall: The PlayStation Portal is a technically impressive device that delivers the core PS5 experience on a portable screen. However, its limited functionality, Wi-Fi dependence, and lack of certain features like Bluetooth audio hold it back from being a truly must-have. If you're a dedicated PS5 player who values portability and have a strong internet connection, the Portal is worth considering. But for others, it might be worth waiting for a more versatile and feature-rich iteration in the future.
