    GREAT PLAYER - TERRIBLE STREAMER

Great blue ray player. Not good at streaming as it frequently gives a network error. Probably why most of the streaming services older models had are bow gone.

    SONY let Me Down.

I purchased this unit on 06/15/2021. I purchased it as an upgrade to my UBP-X800. However, it will not playback audio in Dolby Atmos. My "800" did with no problem. All of the so-called "troubleshooting" did not yield any amelioration. SONY support just repeated the steps in the manual under troubleshooting. The video with this unit is gorgeous! However, I give it "one star" for its failure to deliver in toto. I will be returning this unit and just using my "800" for the time being.

I bought a blue ray player not knowing it is limited to region "A". It will not play half my old DVDs. There is nothing on DVDs that indicate that they are limited to be played on one area player.

I would like to give the Sony 4K UBP-X800M2 DVD player a good review, but I can't. This DVD is a replacement for the same model that I purchased about a year and a half ago. That first Sony 4k DVD player worked good at first, but just after the warranty period ended, it completely failed to work. Unfortunately, there were no other replacement 4K DVD options available to me, so I was forced to purchase the same 4K DVD player again. Hopefully, this one works more than 18 months...

Nice Technology - Hard to Install

I bought this for my wife for Xmas, and it definitely looked like the most advanced 4K/Blu Ray player available. However, I was unable to successfully install it in my house. The root cause is that in order for this player to work, you need a 4K TV and a "modern" HDMI cable. However, I learned this after I returned it to the store. I don't understand why neither the packaging or installation instructions didn't clearly spell this out. Instead, the instructions and troubleshooting steps were quite vague indicating several different causes for the problems I saw. Lastly, the lack of a "screen" meant I had no idea what the machine was actually doing.,

I have an earlier version of this same model, which I really like, and bought this one to hook up to a different TV. Very disappointed that there are far fewer installed apps, and kept getting a message saying “not enough memory” to run an app (Amazon Prime). I could finally get it to run after several attempts, but shouldn’t have to. Returned the product.

Purchased May 2022 used sparingly, maybe 7 times. Went to use it recently, DEAD. Took other DVD player connected to exact HDMI cable no problem. Beyond Sony 1 year warranty called Sony and was told to call the only authorized Sony repair option (Rochester NY) and they told me that they don't repair the Sony UBPX800M2 parts unavailable. Meaning your out of luck, RECYCLE IT. $350+ down the drain. Found a local DVD repairman who diagnosed it and said the motherboard is defective and that IF he could find it the part itself, before labor would be $250.

I purchased this player and have played a vast variety of disc. I have played 3d, 4K, regular blue ray and it freezes up on most of these. I have checked the player on all connections replayed disc and same thing. The disc that we have are will taken care of and all disc play fine on old player except for 4K. It freezes and skips in different places. It stops and you have to restart it. The player is a piece of garbage and it’s going back today.

Great 4k UHD Blu-ray player with HDR10 and DV

The Sony UBP-X800M2 is a 4k/HDR (up to 3840 x 2160p resolution) Blu-ray Disc player is a powerhouse that can be used for either a Dolby Vision or HDR10 TV. To use Dolby vision you have to manually turn it on in setup, you loose 3D player capabilities with it on. The X800M2 performs 4K upscaling at 60p, offers up to 12-bit color and 24p True Cinema to maintain the original frame rate of the film. To get the best results make sure you set your display for 60p (enhanced) HDMI input and you connect it with an HDMI 2.0a cable for 4K HDR to be supported. There is already a firmware update, make sure you install it, you can do this over the Ethernet internet connection or with the USB port (hidden under the plastic cover on the front right of the player). As for sound, Dolby Amos and DTS:X are both supported as well as Dsee upscaling for low bit rate audio. A separate HDMI audio out is available if you have a setup that needs separate HDMI audio and video. There is also a coaxial digital audio output port but an optical port is missing on this player. This player supports Bluetooth audio with the unique ability to listen to audio with wireless Bluetooth headphones at the same time. Great for families with a hearing impaired members. You can use Bluetooth headphones alone for private listening. Sony has also gone to the extent of engineering the chassis to prevent microvibrations if you like to play your sound at real life levels for those action sequences! The X800M2 supports a wide variety of media: Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, and Stereoscopic 3D (profile 5) as well as DVD video and audio and CD audio discs. The X800M2 can play HEVC, VP9, VP6, MPEG-2. MPEG-4 AVC, Xvid, WMV9, AVCHD, VC1 and Motion JPEG video files. It also supports JPEG, GIF, PNG, MPO MPF 3D and BMP photo files. Smart apps • Netflix, • Youtube • Amazon Prime These support UHD. I was not able to get Atmos to work with these. Hopefully they get the Apps updated. Settings tips • Bravia Mode — Turn this Off if not using a Sony Bravia TV (the default is On). • HDR Output – Be sure to have this set to Auto (not Off) to allow HDR content to your display. • Dolby Vision Output – Also be sure to turn this on for Dolby Vision content and off for 3D content. Note Video Settings and 3D playback are not unavailable when turned On. • Display Type — You can choose between a TV and projector. • Output Resolution — This should stay to Auto unless you want to play a lower resolution for some reason. • 24p Output — Set this to Auto so the player adjusts to the disc. • 4k Upscale Setting — With this on Auto (1 or 2) it will enhance lower resolutions discs to Ultra HD quality. I really like this player, solid build, UI is simple and easy to navigate. The sound and picture are outstanding. I noted a marked improvement from my first gen Phillips 4k player. They really need to figure out how to get Dolby vision to auto detect it is cumbersome to use and sometimes difficult to know what content requires DV for best output. The smart apps are limited and Vudu is missing, Dolby Atmos is not supported in the included streaming apps. Hopefully the app library will expand in the future. With all that said I recommend this player, it is the best bang for the buck with the included 2 free movies 4K for a limited time (Jumangi Welcome to the Jungle and Spiderman Into the Spider-verse).
