This is my first 4k Blu-ray player. I had a regular Blu-ray that was great, although there were a couple movies it would not play. I eventually realized it was the player. This 4k player, was able to play of them; it was the original Piranha. :-) The unit: it is black, basic box shape and heavy. I was surprised at how heavy it was but whatever. I'm not going to be lifting it other than when first putting it where I need to put it. There is no display (to show you time or anything else). At first I thought, where is my display? But I actually prefer it display-less. All the way to the right edge are the power button and then right beside it, to the left, is the eject button. There is a tiny LED light that lets you know the unit is on. I powered on the machine, went through the setup (used the manual to guide me) and then performed the update. All went well. The home screen is very basic, which I am not used to, but I appreciate it. The machine powers on quickly and loads discs quickly. As far as discs, I watched Avengers: Infinity War and Aquaman. Both looked and sounded great. It does what it's supposed to do. I have a Samsung sound bar (2.1, w/ sub) setup. I use the HDMI for A/V input. My tv is a Samsung 4k. I then tested a CD (an old Silkk the Shocker CD). It takes slightly longer to load (than blu-rays). It played fine, through my sound bar. I then tested the bluetooth. I was able to pair all 3 of my bluetooth devies - LG bookshelf stereo, LG PK7 portable bluetooth player, Sony wireless bluetooth over-the-ear headphones. Although all three paired, only the portable bluetooth speaker and the headphones worked. You can pair up to 9 devices to remain in the 4k player's memory. I won't be using this feature, because I have plenty of better ways to play my music; but I wanted to test it. I then tested the Network capabilities. I went to the settings, which recognized my router and Plex. I went through Plex and played a video. It worked. Warning: it fast forwards fast as he-- !!! You have to go through folders like Windows file explorer to get to what you want. But when you get there, it plays. The picture took some seconds to clear up. I will never use this feature, nor will I ever use the machine for streaming services. I have a dedicated Roku for all of that. I AM surprised though that it only includes 3 streaming services and of them is not Hulu. That's wierd. Why have any at all then if you are only going to include 3. Anyway, thank goodness I have zero intentions of streaming with the player. I should also get into this old school-looking remote. I don't like the remote (but who truly cares, right? The star of the show is the actual player). The remote is a fat rectangle block. It just screams 90s. It is a good size though. And the layout is fine. In all, I really like this player. I am pleasantly pleased. And I totally recommend it.

    Above Average

I updated firmware to version '50'. Price is right compared to similar quality players. The unit it solidly built, I've used for only about 6 hours, it froze once already, power button unresponsive, requiring me to pull plug from back .. a bit of a concern. Current firmware requires you to manually select Dolby Vision - hopefully Sony will add an option for 'Auto' in a future update? 4K playback is very good, but I need to test on others before I can give an in depth assessment. Upconversion from blu-ray 1080 to 4K is very good (however, don't have another unit to compare directly to - would like to see side by side with highly rated Panasonic). Upconversion from DVD 720 was average on one disc, poor on another. Sound, particularly on 4K movie is excellent through a Yamaha receiver. It played CD-R audio discs without a problem. The on screen interface is low resolution with pathetic icons - as if Sony went back to 1980's and hired a student to design it for them. Come on Sony, it's as if you didn't even try. Responsiveness of remote is a bit delayed. I will update this review once I've used it a bit more.

Doesn't have automatic Dolby Vision switching. You have to manually switch it on and off for every disc. No gigabit ethernet port. Does not support MKV videos.

All Brand new 4K and all videos skip! I made an appointment with geek squad so they can take a look. I am very disappointed. On 6-13-2020, we bought a 55" Samsung TV and were looking forward to watching 4K videos.

I replaced my previous BluRay player with this 4K model. The picture is a little better than BluRay and everything works well with the player/remote. I have not had a chance to go through all the functions, however what I have works well. Out of the box it was easy to install but once connected to the wifi needed an update (which is typical for most devices that connect to the internet) I run mine directly to the hdtv and off wifi but there is an ethernet option and additional ports (HDMI/USB). I tested out a couple 4K DVDs I received and already own and the picture is great. The player also works fine for regular DVD and BluRay. With any 4K player/device, it will only play as well as the screen you are playing it on (so if you do not have a 4K tv you won't get 4K playback) Great player, no lag in play or loading. I would recommend.

Blu ray player arrived defective he wouldn’t play. I tried to play the 4K disk of John Wick 3 four times but it wouldn’t play. I returned the player for a Panasonic and I am much happier with it.

This Sony 4K player is an absolutely wonderful addition to my home theatre. (It is paired with a Sony XBR-X900F TV and Sony receiver.) The player looks beautiful on my tv stand, it is gorgeously designed, sturdily made and well packed machine. The picture quality with the tv and player are quite stunning, both supporting Dolby Vision. They complement each other quite well. I love the menu on the player, it is streamlined and not cluttered with unnecessary apps. I was unsure if 4k really looked better than a blu-ray, but with this player and tv together I can honestly say yes it does. I am quite happy with this upgrade to my home theater system.

This is my second Blu Ray DVD Player, and I have to say that this Sony UBP-X800M2 exceeded my expectations. If you’re looking for a real 4K/Blu-ray player with an outstanding, clear sound this is the unit you are looking for, beside the fact that the design looks great in my living room with my 4K TV and other equipment. This is an upgrade from Sony’s previous UDP-X800 player with added Dolby Vision processing, meaning that color, contrast and brightness are way better. Sony also updated the graphic interface, making more simple and understandable The first thing that captures my attention was that any regular DVD movie looks way better on this unit, it looks like almost 4K. And the added new audio technologies: Dolby Atmos and DTS-X, the sound, base, effects, were crystal clear, and chatting and voice definition clear as well. The setup is extremely simple and intuitive and I finished in a matter of minutes and the first thing it is going to ask you is to update the firmware, which I highly recommend to do it. And I really appreciate a lot that it comes with the user manual, so just take your 10 minutes of time to check it out and customize the unit for your preferences, but the standard settings works fine, beside the fact that it will adjust the video quality the best suitable for the TV, specially the HDMI port to enhanced mode. There are 2 hdmi out ports, so the second port allows me using my older non-4K receiver by assigning it to audio out in settings, which is a great idea. I have used blu ray, MP4, MP3, +r recorded different discs formats etc, and everything were played so far. I hooked up physically to the network using the Ethernet port, I did it in this way because my router is close to the player. But I also tested wirelessly without any issue, no drops if I am streaming movies on Netflix. It comes with 3 Streaming Apps, Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Prime. The video quality gives a beautiful, clear and as precise a picture. I have always love the USB port on this unit, I can play my mp4 videos and mp3 music. It is an option that is worth it. The Sony UBP-X8000M2 does 3D movie processing as well, but you need to turn Dolby Vision to the “Off” position. This purchase includes 2 4k movies, with it is a nice addition to your investment. You will have to order the 4K HDMI cable separately. Another great feature you will find is that while the audio comes out of the tv or your sound system, you can also send the audio through Bluetooth connectivity to either a wireless speaker or headphones, at the same time. But with the new Dolby Vision technology I have to say that the picture was absolutely stunning. I have watched so far like 10 different 4K movies, physical and streaming form my 4k digital library, and I was totally captured with the video quality and the sound. You simply can’t go wrong with this Blu Ray. If you want to take full advantage of your 4K Ultra HD TV, then this is the player you need. I am very pleased with this unit.

    Good Player, Limited Streamer

Sony has a solid machine in its UBP-X800M2 4K Blu Ray player. It starts up quickly, loads discs quickly and displays videos without issue. In addition to disks, the player has a USB port on the front. It will accept nearly any video format including Divx, XVid, HEVC, MKV, MP4, and others. Accessing files from the USB drive is as easy as using a disk. The player can stream from a home media server as well. A unique feature is two HDMI outputs. This is very useful for those who may have upgraded their TV without upgrading their home theater audio system. Content providers have required equipment makers to restrict video playback unless all components along the path support the latest copy protection standards released earlier this year. Since many folks are not interested in updating their expensive amplifiers for the sake of video switching, the player can be hooked up directly to the TV for video with the secondary port being connected to a home theater audio system. The player also puts audio via a digital coaxial cable or even over Blutooth for private listening. This iteration supports Dolby Vision, which will make your discs look better if your TV also can use this high dynamic range information. Not all movies are encoded with Dolby Vision, as this is a newer option for studios. Even last year’s Thor Ragnarok did not not it. Sony includes three streaming apps on its player: Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon. Unfortunately, Sony created a proprietary interface rather than leaning on Google TV, Roku, or Amazon. This means you can’t add Hulu, Vudu, Apple, or any of the other services which may have 4K content available. For those services it does include, the picture looks great and the player provides a decent interface
