Excellent Performance, but is that enough?
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This product performs better than any other 4k Blu-ray player I have ever used. But I have one major reservation about it that I will reveal at the bottom in the summary. SET-UP The back contains 2 HDMI outputs, one for A/V, one for audio only. This feature is rarely seen on anything but the premium players. The back also has provisions for USB, Ethernet, and coaxial digital outputs. I always like to go into every piece of equipment I get and manually tweak the settings. Thinking I can do it better and not rely on the machine deciding in its Auto functions. I went against tradition and let the Sony set itself up with Auto, as I think most people will. Aside from an odd Dolby Vision option, the Sony hit it spot on first time. Other than the one DV oddity; Wi-Fi, video, and audio options all went without issue. Super quick and easy. About 2 minutes total. PERFORMANCE I was hooked on the first press of the eject button. Lots of folks say you can judge the quality of a product by the behavior of its media tray. If that is the case, this is a great piece. The tray ejected and loaded nearly silently. Disc access was quick and very muted, not a distraction like other players. No more sounds of jet engines spinning up with this Sony. As I stated in my opening line, this is the best performing 4k Ultra HD Blu-Ray player I have ever used. I have it hooked up to an LG OLED TV and the performance of the HDR10 and Dolby Vision 4k Blu-Rays are outstanding. Blacks are inky and bright scenes in a light controlled room are almost too bright. There is outstanding definition in the darker scenes and the shadow details. Bright scenes are very bright, but still retain fine detail with no visible banding, something that is often missing in other players. This player also does a unique SDR to HDR conversion that Sony claims improves picture quality of SDR material. I normally don’t like a processed image, but I feel this made a subtle and discernible improvement. The X800M2 supports all major HDR formats: Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG. In addition, the player also supports the major surround sound formats: Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Dolby TrueHD, to name a few. Audio performance was just as clear and pristine as the video playback. Dolby Atmos and DTS soundtracks sounded great. This player has many more audio / video features and playback options. Far too many for this review. Needless, to say, if you have a file, this will probably play it and make it sound or look better. The Bluetooth feature is a nice touch. The unit easily paired with my Sony headphones and I was able to watch movies silently. Great for late night binge watching and not wanting to disturb the family. I noticed no discernible lag in the Bluetooth transmission compared to the picture. NEGATIVES First and foremost, if a majority of your video collection resides in the cloud, this may not be the unit for you. It only supports 3 streaming services: Netflix, Prime, and YouTube. Nothing more. Even more frustrating is that to enable these 3 services, you must agree to allow Sony’s terms of service stating they can see your viewing habits. I was able to lock up the player. Trying to find some HDR videos on YouTube, toggling back and forth between videos, rewinding and fast forwarding, I eventually locked up the player. Totally unresponsive. I had to unplug the unit and wait a little bit before plugging back in. Problem solved. I’m sure it is nothing an app update or firmware update can’t fix. Dolby Vision must be toggled either on or off. I wish for an Auto option on this setting (I can’t believe I just said it). The unit will not auto switch between HDR10 and Dolby Vision automatically based on source material. SUMMARY As I have stated before, I really like this player. It is well built, and the audio and video performance are excellent. Far better than my players that are only a couple of years old. With the SDR to HDR image enhancements and 4k up conversion, audio and video processing have been getting better and better. Why only a 4-star review after all the good words? I will say: value. Is this a great player? Absolutely. But is it better than a similarly priced XBOX or Sony’s own PS4? I’m not so sure. Even though the picture is slightly better than my XBOX, the audio performance is only on par. Add to that, the XBOX and PS4 can play Blu-Rays (the XBOX will play 4k Ultra HD Blu-Rays and supports HDR), plus can play hundreds of games, and have apps for nearly any and all streaming services available today. I find recommending a standalone Blu-Ray player hard to do. My opinion: if you only want outstanding audio/video quality without all the extras, I don’t think you will be disappointed by this player. It really is a great product. However, for the same price or similar amount, you can get an equally impressive XBOX or PS4. These devices, especially the XBOX, have almost as good video quality, identical audio quality, and can do so much more.

SOLID, Well-built, Outstanding picture and audio
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The first thing you will notice about this player is that it is quite hefty, but that's a good thing. Most lesser expensive blu-ray players feel like they could very well float off the table but this thing has some heft to it which eliminates noise during playback due to vibrations, and it was darn near silent. It isn't small either but I actually like this as it matches higher-end components a little better in terms of it's form factor. This may seem like a small detail but there is just a slight green power light when it's on which doesn't distract when you're watching a movie. It has connectivity options for both WiFi and ethernet which allows it to have network streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Video. The picture quality was bonkers in both HDR and non-HDR content. Could not be more pleased. And then upscaling from to 4K was quite good too. It also worked flawlessly with my Sony TV with HDMI control. What's interesting is that it has 2 HDMI outputs so you can output audio on a dedicated HDMI channel and video to another which will allow for more flexibility in your particular home theater setup. The remote was a nice size and wasn't overwhelming offering everything that you would need. One last thing is that it also has capabilities to connect to bluetooth headphones which was nice to see.

Good but not great
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Sony - UBP-X800M2 - Streaming 4K Ultra HD Hi-Res Audio Wi-Fi Built-In Blu-Ray Player - Black I’m going to make some of the Sony fans a little mad over this review. Sony knows how to build equipment, but why do they keep rushing things to market when there not ready. This UHD Blu-ray player is just that, not ready. As soon as power and setup are complete, I’m greeted with a message about new firmware. I’ve connected it to my wireless network, so I say yes to the update. I’m one of those who always does the updates if a device says it has one to do. I select yes to install the update, then select network as the method of getting the update. The player responds with a message that it is not connected to a network and I should check my network connection. After checking the network connection and allowing the player to verify the connection, I go back to do the update and am greeted by the same message about not being connected and to check the connection. This repeats several times as I check into what could be causing the wireless network to not be working. I am running a business class UniFi access point, there is NO issue with the wireless connection. I check YouTube and it works fine, I check Netflix and it works fine. I go back to do the update and… no network connection. At this point I run an ethernet wire to the player and rerun the network setup, this time selecting wired as the method. Run the firmware update and sure enough it downloads and runs just fine. After the firmware I remove the wired connection and rerun network setup going back to my wireless. Again, it refuses to even check for firmware stating that no network connection is available. Netflix, YouTube, and Prime work fine on the wireless connection. So, my first conclusion is that although Streaming works fine with a wireless connection, the players own internal system does not. This is obviously a firmware issue and will probably get fixed in future updates if possible. Next, I want to add my HULU and CBS streaming accounts. I can’t find any place to do this. So, I reread the manual and there’s no mention of adding streaming channels. I go online and soon find out that Sony has decided that this feature will be removed in this year’s model. How can they claim this unit is a streaming device when they removed the ability add channels other than the 3 they chose? Again, this feature might be fixed in a firmware update but after reading some responses from Sony I’m not sure they will fix it. So, the network connectivity and streaming are severely limited on this unit. If your wanting a unit to do streaming and UHD Blu-ray, find something else. This unit handles UHD Blu-ray beautifully but falls on its face for streaming. All of the above comments are for the benefit of people looking for that one device that does it all. This is not it, keep looking. I’m truly sorry if I’ve upset some Sony fans, but WOW did they drop the ball on this one. You needed to know this, maybe they’ll get it fixed, but wait until they do if you want the all in one solution. If someone has figured out how to add channels to the streaming portion, PLEASE post it. It’s not documented, and Sony says this player will not do it. Read below for my review of the UHD Blu-ray portion of this player. Let’s not go over the specs here. There are many places you can find those online. The unit came with 2 free UHD movies, Jumanji-Welcome to the Jungle, and Spider-man into the Spider-verse. Following all the included instructions I setup my 4K AVR and 4K TV to get the best of the best picture and sound. To be completely honest I did see and hear the difference in Jumanji. I did not watch the Spider-man movie because I don’t care for Anime. The picture was bright and vibrant with color, and the blacks were black. Dark scenes were watchable because the blacks were so black that anything with any color or light to it were viewable. The colors I noticed most were yellows and golds. On my normal settings I use every day yellow and gold are just yellow and gold. With the suggested settings yellows and golds really popped out. Of course, all colors were better, just what I noticed the most were the yellows and golds. The surround sound was normal to me until it came to the drumbeats and jungle sounds. The drumbeats were extra punchy, and the jungle was impressive. The remote is well laid out, as with most other Sony remotes. Functions acted as I would expect. I would have liked to see a lighted remote, but this one is not. The on-screen layout is easy to understand and use. No confusing garbage on the screen like so many others. Even with fast startup turned off, the startup time was only about 10 seconds. My previous Blu-ray player would take a full minute to be ready. The unit itself is small (thin) with no display at all, other than the very small green power light, it is a bit on the heavy side though. My overall impression of the UHD Blu-ray player section is very good. For now, streaming sucks. That could change at any moment when either Sony adds a way to add channels, or someone figures out how to do it.

Ultra HD Blu- Ray DVD player
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This player almost has it all! - build quality is amazing and this thing is heavy! - it has Dolby Atmos, HDR10, upscaling image quality to 4K - it has anti vibration technology to offer crisper sound, even when the disc is in ther is almost no spinning sound, or fan sound. this thing is sound proof! - the response rate of this player is very very good, almost no delay at all when loading a disc. - you can play from a USB, or a disc, or from a very few streaming services (that's why the 4 stars rating). - it has wifi capability that connected with no issues, and streaming via wifi is decent but you can always go with Ethernet and never miss a thing. - it comes with 2 gift discs (Jumanji & spiderman into the spoider verse. the discs also have digital codes for the movies to be saved in your library if you want to. - the player has Bluetooth built in and can be used with BT headphones or to connect to a sound bar. - if you have an HDR 10, and Dolby Atmos 4K TV like I do, you will need to buy an HDMI2 cable to get the most out of your devices. - this player can play 3D movies. all in all this is a very nice peice of technology, and it could last years, I just wished Sony was more open minded about allowing other streaming services on the device.

Incredible Clarity and Detail
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Setting it up was quick and simple. Just plug in the power and HDMI cable and follow the on screen instructions. I chose to connect wirelessly as I suspect most people will. After that, up popped the main screen. Compared to my previous DVD player which was also a Sony, the streaming options are much more limited. While my previous player tried to be a DVD player and an all-inclusive streaming device, this one is limited to Netflix, Amazon Video and YouTube. Fortunately those are the main services I use. For the occasional other steaming services I use, I already have a device for that. In addition, you can play movies and music from a USB device or your home network. Another great option is that you can send audio to your TV via HDMI and to a wireless speaker via bluetooth connection, at the same time. Previously I had to run my DVD player HDMI connection through my audio receiver then out to my TV. Since I keep my audio equipment tucked out of site in a video closet, this eliminates having to run a video cable through walls to get theater quality sound. Another great addition is Dolby Vision HDR. I have a fairly new 4K ultra HD TV and I have never seen the full capabilities of my TV until now. The picture was absolutely stunning! Sony included 2 movies in the packaging. I was just planning to watch a little bit to see how it looked and the next thing you know, I had watched the entire movie. I was totally immersed. I have to say that I was just about at the tail end of watching DVDs anymore except for the occasional kids DVD we can get for free at the public library, but now I might have to rethink building up my own video library. I won’t go into all the specs for this device in my review as you can see them for yourself on the Sony website, but for a practical, user based review, you simply can’t go wrong with this device. If you do have a 4K Ultra HD TV, then this device will certainly help you squeeze every last ounce of value out of it. I highly recommend the investment.

Great UHD player with DVD-A and SACD capability
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wanted to see UHD video with UHD audio and this allows that and more. It seems to be a sturdy build and has a bit of heft. it is VERY fast to load disc, I was surprised by that. I've watched 3 titles, all rentals, with Dolby Vision HDR and all 3 played with no issues. The Picture was really great AND the HD audio (7.1 TrueHD) can't be matched via streaming. Of course, it would have handled any DTS HD MA video too. The streaming apps work but I didn't buy the player for those. The player found my media-server and plays (my music) files there fine. Also plays from USB. I do own DVD-A and SACD so am happy to have a modern player to utilize them now and for the life of the new machine. The manual Dolby Vision switching required me to add an "On / Off" sequences to my Harmony remote and is a non-issue to me. (this does require lookups in Blu-ray.com to determine if a DV disc or not)

UBP-X800M2 - Supports SACD/4K/Blu-ray/DVD
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I picked up the UBP-X800M2 by SONY, because I wanted a 4K/Blu-ray player that also played both SACDs and DVD-Audio. This SONY model does the trick and at a very low price ($200-300 depending on whether you get it on sale). These days, unless you want to spend over $1,000 on a player, you pretty much need to get this one or the next step up by SONY (which is around $500-600) if you want to play SACDs. If you’re looking for a lower cost option, this is the one you want.

Excellent 4K Ukraine HD Blu-ray
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sony 800M2 player combines ease of use, high quality audio and video, and all your commonly used streaming apps into one package. Setup is a you would expect. The remote is simple to use. And where this unit really shines is on the performance. Video is beautiful, with amazing clarity and color saturation, black levels look great, and the entire experience feels so much more immersive than traditional Blu-ray. Audio quality is outstanding, When a device this advanced works well, it seems like magic - it just does what you expect and more, without fuss or trouble. Sony has easily hit this mark. An excellent unit, highly recommended.

Awesome Player
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This player is well built. It actually looks like an audio/visual component unlike the other plastic things out there. Disc playback and audio are amazing. I did not buy this player to stream but to watch discs so I really do not care if it has three streaming services or ten. Buy a disc, the quality will always be better and then you have it forever. My only complaint, it needs a display but this has become a problem for all manufacturers.

Best picture and fastest player
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I like that this player is heavy, as a result, no more vibration, no more noise. The player is very responsive, the fastest I'd say. Picture quality is top notch. Did a very good job upscaling DVD too. Excellent audio. Support many formats. Easy to setup. No problem updating firmware. 2 things I don't like; 1. only has 3 streaming services (Netflix, Amazon prime, You Tube) and no way to add more. Hopefully this can be fixed by firmware. 2. Remote is not lighted.

Sony-s a Brand Name I Trust
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a very nice 4K Blu-Ray Player. Purchased one like this some 4 years ago for the TV in the bedroom Works great. Finally, after 12-13 years, my standard Sony Blu-Ray player, in the living room would only play regular DVD's. Would no longer recognize a Blu-Ray Disc, but after a couple of thousand movies or so things don't last forever. Since being 12-13 years of age, but could be a simple fix, it wasn't worth getting it looked at and since it was around Black Friday, Best Buy had this one on sale. Couldn't turn it down. Would have purchased it anyway even it wasn't on sale. Sony brands are excellent products. My TV's are Sony as well along with some stereo equipment. Sony's a name I trust.

Excellent disc player and streamer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sony UBP-X800M2 UHD player has all the bases covered. If you have a shiny disc, this unit will play it. CD, DVD-Vidoe, Blu-Ray, Ultra 4k, DVD-Audio, and SACD, all work great. It seems to read-in the discs is much faster than other players I've tried, which is nice. I tried dozens of different discs and it played every one without any issues. Which is a first for any disc player that I've ever owned. If you have a TV that supports all the latest features and standards this is definitely the player for you. Ultra 4k video, all current HDR standards, and wide color gamut are all supported. Even 3D discs if you have any of those (I don't so can't comment on that). 4k streaming from Netflix works great, too! Watching a 4k Blu-Ray encoded with Dolby Vision is incredible! By far the best picture quality I've seen on my TV. Also, this Sony unit seems built for the long haul. It's heavy and looks and feels like a premium product. Even though it's not inexpensive it is worth every penny and then some. Highly recommended.

Great 4K Blu-Ray Player with some drawbacks
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall, this is a great 4K Blu-Ray player. It's the quality you would expect from Sony. Having had a Sony Blu-Ray player (non-4K) that is not that old, the interface is a significant improvement. If you have 4K Blu-Ray Discs, it does support HDR and the movies look and sound great when paired with a 4K TV as well as the right HDMI cable. Mine came bundled with two 4K Blu-Rays, which is a nice touch given the price. It also comes with Netflix (the shortcut button on the remote is a nice touch), Amazon Prime VIdeo, and YouTube. It would have been nice to have more streaming options - so it's basically an enhancement to your home theater setup and not a replacement for other devices - you will still need another smart or streaming device that has a wider range of apps. The fact that it's upgradeable via software update may allow for additional apps to be added in the future though. It also has has an "instant-on" feature, and it does turn on very quickly when this is enabled. The only major issue I had was with the size. It is easily 2.5x the size of a comparable Sony Blu-Ray player and I had trouble fitting it into the cabinet that's connected to my TV. Other than that though, it's a great product and I highly recommend it - as long as you have the space for it.
