I must warn you up front - this speaker is huge. It comes with a built in dolly handle for transportation and weighs over 65 pounds! I intended to use this to replace an older bluetooth speaker that I used at parties not realizing that this one is probably 5x the size. As I titled the review, this could easily be used by itself (or paired via the "connect" feature) to provide the music and lights for an event with a DJ, perhaps even a wedding. There are 2 microphone inputs including one that can be set to "guitar mode" to handle a live music setup as well. The lights that pulse and change with the music are fun, but there's the option to turn them off if they get too distracting or obnoxious. SOUND QUALITY: - The sound quality is superb. I tried connecting this to a television with an optical output. I watched a YouTube music video only to realize that I had configured the speaker incorrectly. By default, it will run in "TV Sound Booster" mode which means that it acts almost like a supplemental subwoofer (with a few mid range additions too). My TV isn't able to simulataneously output to its speakers and the optical out, so I had to switch TV Sound Booster off. But I imagine you could easily use this to augment an existing setup, especially if you're lacking low-end sound. Once I switched off that mode, the full sound came through crisply and loudly. I barely had the volume up to 20% before the family deemed it as too loud for our home (wall rattling). There are three options under the "ULT" button for how expansive the bass is. When it was off, I had to strain to hear bass that wasn't from a bass drum. At ULT1, I found a good mix of bass guitar, other mid range drums, along with the rest of the band setup. ULT2 was almost too muddy of a mix for a guitar-based band video - but it pulsed perfectly for dance music. When I took the speaker outside, I didn't have to turn the volume up much beyond 40% to clearly hear everything well - even with traffic noise (we live near an expressway). MICROPHONE/GUITAR SUPPORT: - This was somewhat unexpected. I plugged in my bass guitar and I swear this is my new favorite way to practice or jam along with music. I could adjust my guitar to a loud enough level over the music so that I could hear myself playing. This brings a whole new dynamic to playing along with videos online. I don't have a microphone to test with, but I imagine this would work really well along with it. The box suggests for karaoke, which I could totally see as well, and it has microphone holders that retract on the side to hold them inbetween sessions. MISCELLANEOUS: - There's an option for Bluetooth to prioritize between sound quality and stable connection. I love this because all too often I've had to deal with sound cutting out because I'm streaming from the phone in my pocket and I walk away, proverbially ruining the party. When I set the stable connection option, I didn't notice any degradation in sound quality, but I also didn't find that I could go farther away - I wasn't able to lose a connection within my own house in either mode. I suspect that's because both my phone and this device use a very modern version of Bluetooth. - I did also pair with a very old Bluetooth device and found something interesting. I had to set its volume to the max to even hear sound come out of the speaker, which was a sharp contrast to newer devices who allowed for syncing of volume levels (i.e. you could control the volume from the device streaming to the speaker or from the speaker itself and they were the same). - The app has some confusing language choices here and there. It's pretty clear to me that it's still being worked on, as there were some counter-intuitive flows in order to change settings. The app is required if you want to update the speaker. As soon as I installed the app and connected it, the speaker already had an update. I'm not sure how often these will happen, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that even this speaker will require updates like everything else technology-related in our lives. - I wasn't able to fully test the "25 hour" capacity of the speaker, but I definitely used it after a full charge for more than 18 hours straight at varying volumes. I'm pretty sure you'd be able to fully charge it and use it for a lengthy event without issue. - One nit-pick - this comes with a USB A port which can be used to charge a device. Majority of new devices use USB-C, so it would have made more sense to have a newer port. But it also outputs power and such a slow rate that newer phones won't be able to charge off of it. I think the real intent of the port was to be able to plugin a USB storage device with music on it.

I love the speaker i just wish it was a little bit louder

I purchased this speaker with excellent open box. I was disappointed that the optical cable was missing. Spent more than 3 hours with customer service and they failed to adjust the pricing.

Is not enough sound for it it okay to use it for small barty no big if u like to buy it you have to get 2 of them

Very well built party speaker sounds great good quality also has Bluetooth connection party lights looks very well built highly recommended and also has a 25 hour battery without being plugged in can take out to special occasion parties BBQs very portable

Theres speakers older and cheaper than this, ajd honestly its way over rated then whats its worth

Not a Sony or JBL guy just wanted something for my garage and while it has bass, its too much as it takes over the mids and highs. Went with (2) 120's nice tight bass and mids and highs conform well.

Let me begin by saying I have previously reviewed Bluetooth speakers from Sony the past 2 years. Last years ULT Tower 10 and the previous generation SRS-XV800. The ULT 9 is the perfect combination of everything I like about each of those two models. The look and familiarity makes it easy to just open the Music Center app, connect right up and load your favorite music and you are off and running. There is a new app which took me a second or two to figure out but I ended up liking more than the previous app. Great small upgrade here. Just like before, it has the abilities to add wireless mics, plug in a guitar or even become the sound for your TV. All work great and function perfectly. What I feel has improved is the ULT settings. They are not a drastic change to the sound but more solidifying and full like adding a 3rd party sound amp app. Using just the Sony app, I liked the sound of ULT 2 giving a nice full and clear sound and this speaker gets loud, just like its big brother. Where this speaker is better is it is fully wireless and has a long lasting battery. So far, I am on day 3 of not charging using it about 3 hours a day. The lights are the same but seem to be brighter and flash in better sequence with the music and the settings are easily controlled from the app. Of course, you could do it all from the top control if you wanted. The range seems to be great as I walked outside on my back patio forgetting I was connected and it never missed a beat. This is heavy like the ULT 10 because of the battery but moving this around has been zero issue. I was able to sync up all three in the app to test out music playing. They all 3 synced up but the older XV800 seemed to be just slightly behind the other two. When I played just the ULT 9 and 10, man, it was loud and full in this house. Lastly, the sound seems more full and authoritative. Bass just seems to hit and fill every area no matter where I place it. I found when it is sitting near a wall about a foot away, the reflection affect seems to make it feel like I am listening to two or three of these. I REALLY like this speaker and will be using this constantly on my new back yard patio this summer! EXCELLENT job SONY!

This speaker is the best cause ut has good bass and sound quality

I purchased the sony tower 9 speaker a month ago. Its very loud to be a rechargeable speaker. It sounds amazing and gets better loud .

Sucks this doesn’t come with a remote. Doesn’t have options to adjust the treble or bass. Ok not bad of a speaker

Way to drop the ball but yet again, Sony actually sucks when it comes to portable speakers so no surprise there but to purposely not putting the most vital information in the specs lol what a absolute fail on the manufacturers end and again sony speaks and drivers are trash
