Jhene Incites Us to Soul Out, Not Sell Out.

I'm convinced that Jhene Aiko must come from another planet, because this woman is truly on a whole different musical frequency far, far away. This beautiful new artist brings something unique, fresh and clean, to the current musical landscape that cannot be replaced. Souled Out, Aiko's debut, follows her highly acclaimed Sail Out EP and picks up where it left off. She sets off on that journey with the entrancing and personal "Limbo Limbo Limbo" (which sounds like orbiting through space and then crash landing to Earth towards the end, leaving her stranded) and keeps up the momentum telling the story of a young woman sharing her wisdom about how to make it through anything, be it love, lust or life, all the while with gratitude and a smile, on the album's ABSOLUTE BEST track, "W.A.Y.S." (which is a acronym for "Why Aren't You Smiling?" which carries sentimental purpose to her personally), dealing with a lack of support or sense of acceptance, realizing when to let go, on "The Pressure". Aiko also lays bare how it feels to remain true to YOU, even when caught in love's grip on tracks like: the battle ready "To Love and Die" (featuring and co-penned by James Fauntleroy of The Cocaine 80's), being blunt but classy/subtly thirsty for a crush, on the jazzy "It's Cool" and moving on from a guy who can't RISE with you, on "Lyin' King". As far as debuts go, Jhene reinvents what it means to truly debut as a CONSCIOUS ARTIST...1. Refuse to chase trends, 2. Be yourself, 3. Uplift someone (which she does fabulously on the Common assisted "Pretty Bird (Freestyle)) and 4. Let your inner Hippie out to play! There are two bonus tracks on the deluxe version: the revelatory and autobiographical end of a love story, "Remember" and the GORGEOUS calm that is "Blue Dream". This album is a endless wave of vibing out and wanting something REAL for a change. After all, who would ever want to buy into anything fake, when something as real as this is being offered.

I really love her music. It has some dark areas but you can really feel her pain and can tell that she really puts all of herself in the songs as well as revealing some deep dark secrets.

She has been a guest on tracks from other artists and I like those songs. Some of the rap artists featured on her EP I didn't care for. But she's hot, so I gave her full album a chance. Enjoy.

Mesmerizing sound from a new artist, when everyone else seems to be doing all that over-synthesized club music.

“It’s expansive, endearing, and enigmatic, fusing alternative psychedelica, classic R&B skill, hip-hop swagger, and an undeniable aura of its own into something truly timeless….Still, everyone’s playing in her sandbox. Remember throughout the whole journey this Aiko’s ride. You’re going to want to take this trip as many times as possible. This declares that she’s here forever as one of music’s most important voices bringing it one of 2014’s best albums.”

When it comes to making albums, I love consistency. I love when artists go in with a focus and keep that focus from beginning to end, as opposed to putting out a record with a bunch of random songs that have no real cohesion with each other. This album does a great job keeping that focus compared to her previous Sail Out EP. Unfortunately, I like the songs on Sail Out better than the songs on here. I guess when your record is only 7 songs long, consistency is a lot less important. But regardless of that Souled Out is still a great record and should be listened to if you're a fan of Jhene Aiko. 3.5 Stars.

JHENE AIKO IS THE FUTURE OF MUSIC. SHE HAS A UNIQUE SOUND ALL HER OWN. HER VOICE IS SOULFULL, SMOOTH, SOFT AND SWEET. SHE BARES HER SOUL FOR US,AND INVITES THE LISTENERS INTO HER LIFE. THIS CD BLENDS R&B AND HIP-HOP WITH TRADITIONAL POP MELODIES. THE SONGS ON THE CD ARE ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS, LOVE, LOSS AND HEARTBREAK. MS AIKO IS EXTREMELY TALENTED. SHE SINGS AND RAPS. SHE CAN DEFINITELY HOLD HER OWN IN A CYPHER. ITS AN EXCELLENT DEBUT CD

As much as Jhene's debut album has been anticipated, this definitely met expectations. It's very soothing and filled with creative lyrics and composition. There aren't many features, which makes it very genuine and truly a Jhene album. The lyrics are applicable to anyone and many different situations in life, which make it very relatable. Definitely worth buying!

This is some of the best music I've heard from a female artist in a long time. I listen to it when I'm bowling, to relate my nerves. I will say that all the songs sound the same, but they are still good. This is an album I'll always keep close. If you're unsure, just buy it. You can't go wrong.

I purchased both Sail Out and Souled Out at the same time because I was going to see Jhene at One Music Fest in ATL and wanted to know some of her material. I was impressed. Her lyrics are very honest and transparent and NO ID's production provides a good platform for her airy vocals.
