    Great Multiplayer Game

This game is great if you really like playing online multiplayer shooters. It is a lot of fun customizing your characters and testing out news weapons and abilities for online play. That being said everything else is a bit dull. The single player is fun, but it can be beaten in one sitting. Honestly there's nothing else that I feel that is in this game. I suppose I should mention that there's a little mini game that can be played while waiting to connect with other players online, or you can play it in the hub world. It's pretty fun, it reminds me of doodle jump a bit. Also this game is compatible with the splatoon Amiibos, it gives you various extra missions and gear. Overall it's a fun game to play if you're itching to play a multiplayer shooter on the Wii U, just be forewarned that there's not much else to do other than the short story and multiplayer.

Great alternative to standard shooter games

Splatoon is a kid friendly and accessible competitive game. Each online match feels unique in some way, and beginners do not feel instantly intimidated as is usually the case in traditional shooter games. The gameplay is fluid, vibrant and just plain fun. My son enjoyed just navigating around and inking up the course, the graphics are excellent and controls are simple. Progressing levels gives the opportunity to try new weapons and customize your player to be unique in look and feel. I strongly recommend the game, Nintendo continues to impress me with the quality of their releases on the Wii U.

A really novel approach to the 3rd person shooter! Single player is 3D Mario-esque, with great level design and tricky boss fights. Multiplayer is where the game shines. In Turf War, 2 teams of 4 try to lay the most ink on the ground. In Ranked Battle, 2 teams try to fight over a piece of land. Multiplayer connections are seamless and lagless, and the entire game provides a vibrant, exceiting, yet non-violent atmosphere. New maps and modes are slated to be added, so the somewhat limited content at the moment should gradually become less of an issue. I love this game!

A Fantastic New Game for Nintendo

This game is even better than I thought it would be from the Demo times they had for it. The Single Player is fun and has collectibles for you to go back through to collect. The Multiplayer is really fun, and more stable than I would have expected. They are constantly added new (free) DLC in the form of maps and weapons, and they'll continue to add more. If you're lucky enough to get the Splatoon Amiibo, each of them give you a set of different challenges to try to earn more mini-games and gear. A must buy for any Wii U owner.

This is game is primarily an online versus mode shooter. There is a single player campaign, but its' content is fairly basic. You customize a character and wield a variety of ranged and melee weapons in fast paced 3 minute matches. Earn money and level up to purchase new weapons and existing weapon variants with different features to match your playstyle. There are 2 things that hold Splatoon back. 1 is the awful controls which are motion sensor based. You can turn off motion controls, but they are still awful. 2 is the lack of online features. There is no voice chat, so you can't communicate with other people, and you cannot match make into games with friends unless you play the ranked mode.

Welcome to Inkopolis! Let the Turf Wars begin!

Turf Wars: The concept is simple: Two teams of 4 attempting to cover more territory with Ink within the given time limit. That's fun enough, however, that's just the beginning of the fun and strategy. Spawning on your teammates after being "Splatted" by an opponent or by spawning to a beacon set either by yourself or a teammate. Also, the array of specialized weapons & gear to spread the mayhem of ink! There are a number of "maps" to keep things Fresh (pun intended) such as Arowana Mall, Blackbelly Skatepark, Saltspray Rig, Urchin Underpass, Walleye Warehouse with more to come. About the only thing Ink Battles don't include is disappearing ink! BTW, for those who love amiibo support, you'll be happy to know three new amiibo figures have been created to coincide with the release of Splatoon: Inkling Girl, Inkling Boy, and Inkling Squid. There's also Arcade Games within the Plaza area of Inkopolis. You'll meet Judd; a big fat snoozing cat in the Plaza who imparts his wisdom with tips and advise. You'll also run into Spyke in the back alley of the Plaza, who will fix you up with gear not found in the shops. So whether you head into a turf war battle or find yourself spatting Octarians in the singe-player campaign, this game is one of the best, if not the best game for the Wii U to date! There is honestly so much to do, you may also wish to pick up a copy of the Prima Official Game Guide. Happy Inking!

Rivals Mario Kart 8 as "the game" for Wii U

Lots of comparisons with third-person shooters and Splatoon out there but I think the similarities are skin-deep. Splatoon requires much different strategy than most TPS games (CoD, Battlefield, Halo, etc.). I bought this for my 7 year old son but we find ourselves taking turns in multiplayer more than anything -- it's VERY addicting. The gameplay is frantic because rounds are only three minutes. So far there are only two game types with more to come, but our favorite is the general multiplayer where your goal is to paint more of the arena than the opposing team. There are power-ups to help and equipment you can buy or earn to help boost your squid (your in-game persona) abilities. The game is an absolute blast to play and rounds are short so it's easy to forget that last round where it was lopsided and your team was crushed. I'm rating the game 5 stars because it's just that good -- the gameplay is fresh, the graphics & sound are outstanding, and the single-player gives you several hours of fun (and rewards you upon completion). The setup, the style, the gameplay... they all are so typical "Nintendo" and that's a very good thing. That said, there are a couple things I'm hoping Nintendo changes. The news squids are funny but being forced to watch them periodically is annoying. And occasionally the game lobby seems to get "stuck" and you end up spending 2-3 minutes waiting for players or watching people drop out of the lobby, and you can't do ANYTHING while you're in the lobby -- not even leave! The last improvement I'm hoping for relates to the mechanics of changing equipment (paintgun, paint brush, headwear, etc.). I'd like to be able to change my equipment without losing the group of people I'm grouped with. Those downsides will be addressed, I'm sure. Don't wait: buy this one with confidence!

    Better than I expected.

I liked the concept of Splatoon the first time I heard about it, but I was on the fence about whether I should buy it or not. But my interest in the gameplay mechanics, and the fact that a friend had picked it up, convinced me to buy a copy. The main thing I was worried about was the amount of content. There just didn't seem to be very much. In truth, there isn't. There is a comparatively short single player campaign, a two-player competitive balloon popping mode, and two types of online multi-player, both 4 vs 4. I expected to play through the single player mode in a day or two, and then play the online multi-player for a week or so before getting tired of it. That thankfully hasn't happened. While the game would be much better if it had more stages, Nintendo has been continuously adding new ones since the game's release, as well as new weapons. Even without the new content, the gameplay is fun enough that I keep coming back to it. It is technically a shooter, but because the focus is on covering surfaces with ink instead of killing the other players, it feels very fresh. It's hard to put down. Another potential issue which I'm happy didn't end up being a problem is the consistency of online matchmaking. For the most part, the game sets matches up quickly and I seldom notice lag during a match. Sure, I get connection errors every so often, but no where near what I expected given Nintendo's track record with online games. I do dislike some aspects of the game though. For one, you can't choose what stage to play in online. The game randomly picks two stages every other hour, and you will randomly be placed in one of those two stages during each match. In other words, you have no control over what stage you play on online. And there were times when I would see the same stage 4 times in a row because it kept getting randomly picked. I have no idea who thought this was a good idea, but I seriously hope this is changed in an update later on. Another annoyance is the fact that you can't switch weapons without exiting the online mode. And you can't choose what team you want to be on either. For a team based game, that's an odd design choice. You can choose to play with friends, but which team you end up on is randomized. This is supposed to be changed in a later update, but for now, it's annoying. How can you create team tactics when the members are randomized? As such, it's best to go for weapons that are better at covering the area with ink rather than choosing support weapons intended to pick off other players, like the rifles. Despite its flaws, the game is, as I said, hard to put down. I love the way that swimming in ink adds so many new strategic opportunities. And because the game is about ink coverage rather than kill counts, you can sometimes do very well even if you aren't the best shot. You just have to be hard to hit yourself and ink plenty of territory as you avoid the other team. You owe it to yourself to at least try the game out. It's not perfect, but it's one of the most well executed original ideas I've seen in years.

Splatoon is loads of fun, and is one of the most creative ideas for a game this gen. Gameplay is wonderful, and the online works great as well, although the online system itself is a bit outdated. The content in the game offers a fun experience; however, you might be done with it faster than you expected. In an attempt to fix this, Nintendo is releasing a steady stream of free content for Splatoon to keep players coming back for more. There has already been a new stage and two new weapons released as of the writing of this review, with lots more on the way, which should definitely make for a fulfilling purchase.

Nintendo actually tried something different and it paid off. Instead of choosing to go with established characters inking and painting each other's side of the map, they chose to make new ones, set in a new world. And it works! Squids now sit proudly alongside Mario and Donkey Kong in the pantheon of Nintendo IPs to get called upon for future sequels. Of course, it helps that the game is a lot of fun, too, with responsive controls and unique gameplay. Rockin' music, as well. Just note that the bulk of the game is multiplayer only, so single-player purists might not find as much to enjoy.

This is one of the best games Nintendo has put out recently. It has an incredibly addictive multiplayer, where the primary goal (in regular matches) is to cover the most area with your ink (rather than focus on just killing other players). It also has a pretty good single player mode too. Only complaint I have is the lack of better local multiplayer (you and a friend see who can pop the most ballons.... Not very fun).

I play a lot of games and this one is so simple and addicting. You basically run around painting the ground trying to cover more area than the other team. You have a wide variety of weapons to choose from to complete the task and you can even Splat the other players causing them to burst and send paint flying everywhere. It is a good change of pace if you own a wii u and are just looking for something different.

The game itself can be both fun and addicting while keeping a grasp on it's core gameplay. The game also may have a fairly short story mode of about 4-5 hours depending on how you play it or if you rush it with plenty of modes, maps, weapons, and strategy's that will keep you playing for days on end with content being added on a regular basis (at the time of typing this) to keep the game alive for years to come.

Splatoon is fantastic. If it was a multiplayer exclusive shooter, it would be the best on the market. But to call it a multiplayer exclusive shooter would be to do it a disservice, because it also has a solid single player campaign (and some neat variations on said campaign if you fork out the money for the amiibos). The amiibo part sucks, but everything else about the game is top notch. Highly recommended.

This game is pretty fun, you should buy this and play it for hours and hours. It does need more maps though; it changes between 2 maps every couple hours to keep it "fresh" but it kinda fails at doing so. Load up a map and "splat" your opponents on your way to painting the map to victory... literately. The way you win is by your team of 4 players painting the floor the most. It isn't about the most kills, its about the most painted, splat your opponents to slow down their painting so your team can do more. Great game, I recommend it to all my friends that have a WII U!

Splatoon takes the shooter genre to the next level! While I thought movement might be awkward or gamepad to cumbersome, I was wrong on both counts. The controls are amazing and moving faster while traveling through your own ink as well as strategically needing to duck into your own ink to reload adds some great fun. The shooter genre was feeling a little stale before Splatoon came along. Not anymore!

Splatoon is one of the best games on the Wii U, as well as one 2015's best! It's Nintendo's take on an arena shooter that features charming half-human, half-squid kids vying for control of arena's. There is a wide variety of ink-based weapons that are continuously being updated through online updates. Each match is 3 minutes long, so it's perfect for bite-sized chunks of gaming.

My wife sent me to the store on release day after watching commercials on it. We dont regret it one bit. The online multiplayer is extremely fun for my wife who is a causal video game player and my self who is more hardcore . Its kid safe . Only downside is there is no voice chat during competitive play. Also there are ranked matches and many guns snd gear to upgrade

Splatoon is a fun addictive little shooter. While it has a single player mode the real game is in the multiplayer. Easy to pick up and play and has enough meat to keep you coming back. My only real gripe is that it has a series way of selecting maps. They go on a small rotation from day to day so you often get stuck playing the same couple maps each day. There is quite a bit to collect in this game and leveling feels very satisfying. If you are looking for a shooter that is different this is it.

+ Great Art Style + Fun game-play, that is fast and frantic + Single Player adds a break time and more content + Multi Player done right by Nintendo, Matches are fast and fun - Not enough variety in Multi Player, But they are slowly upgrading the game and DLC - Amiibo Unlocks are expensive and hard to find Overall - It's a fun game to play, especially with friends, the free upgrades and DLC are keeping the game alive. But it starts to wear down after about 20 hours or so. Good but not Amazing.
