Splatoon is a great game that people of all ages can enjoy. My kids are hooked on it, my wife who isn't a big video gamer enjoys it, and I can't get enough. Even if you are new to the game, it doesn't feel like you are at a disadvantage playing against people who are ranked higher. The maps are easy to memorize. The game is an easy pick up and play game as well as a game that will reward you for putting in the time. They are also keeping it fresh by rotating the playable maps every couple hours and releasing DLC very early on in its lifecycle.

Splatoon is a refreshing take on competitive shooting multiplayer. Shifting the focus from kill streaks and violence to painting and sea creatures. Online multiplayer is the real draw of this game. The lack of voice chat in any capacity may not sit well with all players but it keeps the environment safe and friendly for players of all ages. The single player of the game is inventive and worth your time as well, with a memorable and intense final boss. Hopefully Nintendo keeps this game and franchise alive with support and additional content.

this game is colorful, fun, and easy to pick up. the controls can seem a little overwhelming but are not very complicated. if the motion controlled camera is too hard to control, there is an option to change it. if you are not good at shooters, this game is still lots of fun. since the game is decided on "paint coverage" of stages, even if you die, you can help out but painting the spots around the base that have been attacked once you respawn. i am generally not a big fan of shooting games but i found this one very fun and easy to play.

Best Shooter on the Wii U

PROs: Splatoon is hands down the best (and only) shooter that I would recommend for children. This game is largely online, but does not have voice chat and all the draw-backs that come with it. The match times are short enough where people quitting a losing game is a non-issue. The game itself is colorful and vibrant. The use of the gyroscope in the gamepad to aim is what I would describe as the first successful implementation of the Wii U's main gimmick. CONs: There is a lack of a satisfactory non-online multiplayer. The single player story mode is very short(3ish hours for 100%). Amiibo functionality QUADRUPLES the single player through use of challenge modes. While fun, it is basically asking for $40 extra dollars for parts of a game I already paid for.

I realize that the premise of this game may seem very Nintendo (and thus turn some gamers off) but I implore you to put that aside to try it. I have been a hardcore gamer for 15+ years (incl. FPS like CS:GO, TF2) and this has easily become my game of choice when I come home from work. It's so addictive! And Nintendo seems exceptionally keen on keeping the DLC, unlocks coming. This game is going to be supported with new content for a while. I haven't had this much fun with a third person shooter (splatter?) in a while. HIGHLY recommend.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this game or not because on the surface it didn't look like something I would be interested in. I ended up buying the game and I am happy to say I am extremely surprised! What I love about it is that I am able to hop right into games and even if I only have 20 mins, I can still play a few matches and still feel like I make progress on my character. It is a refreshing take on the shooter genre and the visual style is refreshing and fun to look at. Would recommend to any age gamer and any skill level.

This game has great potential and can be a lot of fun. It falls short though as a full $60 release. It feels like it should be a $20 Indie title. The graphics are last gen quality, the single player mode is short and uninspired, and the multiplayer, while fun, gets old pretty quick. No voice chat is available and the matches are only 3 minutes long! Just getting warmed up and they end. Plus, there are only 2 arenas available at any given time to play in. They change them every couple hours instead of just making them all available all the time. Nintendo just doesn't get online, but at least this is a small step.

A very unique spin on a genre saturated by games that fail to often innovate. Accessible and fun for players of all ages, the game's simple mechanics and easy single player mode will be loved by children, while the more complex skills and tactics in multiplayer should offer an engaging experience for those looking for a break from your standard military shooter. The visual and music design are the standard of excellence you've come to expect from Nintendo. One of the Wii U's best games, and a must-play for anyone with the console.

Normally, I don't like shooters, since they seem to become too similar to each other, and the online aspects of those games tend to bring the worst out in players. I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game, which could best be described as paintball mixes with 90's Nickelodeon cartoon aesthetics. The main focus of the game, Turf War, is to paint as much of the floor surface as possible, less focus on trying to get rid of the opposing team. Lots of customization for your character as well. Overall a good game for everyone to enjoy.

A fun, original shooter from nintendo. Turns multiplayer on it's head, kills don't count as much as covering the battlefield in your team's color of ink. This twist in gameplay makes the multiplayer accessible to newcomers and veteran gamers alike. Tons of weapons and accessories, with a single player story to boot. A must have for the Wii U.

I'm a big gamer but not typically a fan of online shooters and the like. I like my stories and single player adventures most of the time and rarely play online. Even though Splatoon got excellent reviews, I held off because of this.. Months later, I had some extra money and wanted to play more on my Wii U, so decided to pick it up. Hooooooly moly. SO FUN. I started with the short single-player mode to get my feet wet (no pun intended), and once I started, I could NOT put it down. I played through every level and unlocked all the blueprints for upgraded weapons (for online play), and I wanted MORE. I couldn't resist and hopped into online quick and ranked matches, and was immediately and absolutely hooked. The gameplay and premise sounds silly but it is INCREDIBLY fun. The balance of using the paint to not only go on offense but also for defense (by hiding, and to regain health and "ammo") works brilliantly, and since you can also swim through the paint, you can create pathways of sorts on walls and such and use it to flank your opponents or make yourself creative hiding spots in nooks and crannies around the stages. It gives you a lot of mobility throughout the very well designed levels, both to move around quickly but also to move vertically. If you see a surface, you can probably paint it and swim through/up/on it. The amount of creativity it gives you (for how you want to use it and to cater to your style) is more than I have ever seen in any kind of shooter. Get up close and personal, sit up high and rain paint down, sneak around your opponents, create a bottleneck, hang back and defend an area, rush in and disrupt the opponent's team, whatever. It all works. There is a good variety of weapons, and items/gear you obtain gets upgraded by experience gained while wearing it playing online, which unlocks perks for that gear. The amount of gear is extensive (styles, combinations of perks) and new items cycle in every day. Nintendo also introduces new items with fairly frequent updates. The "Plaza" (essentially a hub) will populate with random other players, and you can even approach them and have an NPC order gear of theirs that you like for you. Weapons vary in ways that seem minor at first but actually cater to very different styles of play, allowing you to experiment and see what works best for you. Weapons all fall into one of a handful of classes, and variations within those classes typically revolve around the combination of subweapons (a main subweapon and special), which again may seem subtle at first but actually can make a big difference in-game. Combining gear lets you get the perks you want to support your play strategy (and different gear/perks can complement your weapon of choice) while also allowing you to apply your own style to your character. Monthly Splatfests (where the entire userbase is split into two teams and compete for 24 hours) not only are a blast, but also reward you with special currency which lets you add perk slots to existing gear or reroll maxed out items. Splatoon Amiibo unlock bonus levels, which when beaten, in turn unlock exclusive gear for your character. Online matches are quick (3 minutes, not counting matchmaking and the quick flyover), battles are INTENSE, and everything, soup to nuts, is just a joy. You can even play mini-games on the gamepad while waiting for matchmaking (which is generally pretty fast). Graphics and performance-wise, it's a first party title from Nintendo, so as expected, graphics are vibrant and colorful (without being loud or obnoxious), music is great and fits the game perfectly, and everything runs silky smooth without a hitch. Gamepad usage is appropriate and non-intrusive, being used to "super jump" to teammates when respawning or to return to base, as well as being used to target some special weapons and to monitor what the paint distribution looks like at a given time (to plot your path to your next destination). Outside of matches, you can look at stats and navigate between different game areas (stores, stages, online, etc.). Everything's is just great. Wow. I can't gush about this game enough. Well done, Nintendo. Well done. If you have a Wii U (which you must, if you're reading this), buy this game. Now. The ONLY negative thing I can say about it is if you're like me, you'll find yourself playing at the end of your day, only to check the time and realize HOURS have blown by, leaving you accomplishing nothing you wanted to that evening and also convincing yourself that you'll be just fine at work/school the next day with 3-4 hours of sleep (or less) so you can squeeze in a few more matches. Stupidly fun, and dangerously addicting gameplay. If you can't tell, I can't recommend this game enough for any Wii U owner. Do yourself a favor and jump in.

You're a kid, you're a squid, you're a kid, you're a squid. Also, if you aren't able to work together as a team you're going to be dead more often than not. Matchmaking based on levels isn't exactly perfect, but it doesn't outweigh the fun you're going to have. Amiibo compatibility makes the longevity of the single player campaign stand out as it nearly triples the gameplay in Octo Valley. Multiplayer will take some getting used to as you work out how to best maneuver with the squid jump, swimming and running abilities.

At it's core, Splatoon is a team and objective-based third person shooter. But don't let that fool you into thinking this is the same cookie-cutter shooter you have seen before. Splatoon brings a wacky and fun atmosphere that is great for kids and adults alike. The ink mechanic makes it more important to focus on covering the arena in your team's color than to try to hunt down other players. This is by far the most non-violent shooter I have ever encountered and my son and I can't get enough. I highly recommend this.

Very fun game. Accessible both to players who love shooters, and to those who might not be as inclined. Very balanced game, and well worth the purchase if you own a WiiU (and even if you don't!). Only complaint is that the single-player and local multiplayer is a bit lacking. If not interested in online play I would not recommend this game.

Iv'e had this game since launch and I have not been able to put it down since then. Its one of the best online shooters I have ever played. I had a better time playing this than Titianfall, Halo, and even Call of Duty. The concept and gameplay is just so fun and unique that I can't help but enjoy myself. Also, there have been a ton of updates since launch and the game is now even better. There are still several updates that are coming. So if you are stuck in the fence about this game... Don't be. Just buy it.

Splatoon is a new ip from Nintendo with a twist on the classic team shooter. In this game points are not awarded by how many players you kill (splat) but by how much turf you cover in a three minute period (turf war) or how long your team can defend one or two locations (splat zones). The game is really vivid and colorful. I am a fan of the game and highly recommend it to all to try. Regular weapon and stage updates have been rolling out fairly consistently with future mode updates planned for the summer months.
