Great series, Great effects, and a different kind of Trek story telling. However...CBS putting it behind a paywall was a stupid idea, leaving this nice set as the best way to watch the show.

A great new vision unlike the original

Unless you are an absolute, bonafide classic Star Trek fan (aka ST:TOS 1965 -1969) you are going to enjoy the new vision of the classic Star Trek universe. Star Trek: Discovery is a stand apart series that tries to give a backstory to the original Trek series without resorting to the conventional technology of the mid-60s. Consider this as what Star Trek may have looked like had it been made in 2017 and get over the inconsistencies. You'll find that Discovery is a new vision with refreshingly new scenarios and promise. The effects are bolder, the storylines darker, the drama more intense. It is Star Trek to a new level of depth. Peppered throughout the series are shadows of things to come, and the producers have desperately tried to connect the series to the series of the original universe (as opposed to the alternate timeline of J.J. Abrams' "Kelvin timeline" universe). The effort seems like a freshman treatment at times with forgettable moments and side stories, yet in light of this being a project that has shifted production teams several times, it is forgivable. It was an almost impossible task considering the demands of fans of all the other series and movies. Somehow it manages to hold its own when seen as one huge ten part episode. Discovery is not perfect, but it is daring - it pushes the envelope and takes us to places "NO ONE has ever gone before." This Blu-Ray DVD Series One set promises a deeper insight into the production of a series it took literally years to complete. It includes cast and crew interviews, behind the scenes features and never seen before deleted scenes that prepare you for the upcoming second season. This is a series that needs to be added to most every Trekker or Trekkie's library. Keep in mind that the series is dark and deserves the mature rating it carries. Parents should be advised of the adult nature, violence and language.

    Re-Imagining STAR TREK

Were you expecting an homage to Captain Kirk and the original series? You'll be disappointed. This is pure space adventure with the focus on a more malevolent universe with trigger happy aliens and an equally more aggressive federation. Any pretense about exploration is abandoned within minutes. I wish Gene Roddenberry's vision had remained, but I guess the network doesn't think it will sell, at least yet. Oh well. So, what do we have here? Tension, action, space, strong characters, great special effects and sound effects. The plot generally holds together, even if strained on occasion. Those of us who buy into every space-placed program offering usually aren't too picky. It takes a real dog (Battlefield Earth) to offend us. This is actually quite a bit of fun, approaching the recent movies in production quality.

The show is great, and well transferred to Blu-ray. The SteelBook is available only through mail from BestBuy. I bought 3 copies including one for self and 2 for family members. Only 1 came through looking like something you'd select, if you had any choice, from a store display. 2 arrived looking like they'd been roughly handled with tear in outer packaging....no real damage, but not as this writer born in 20th century, raised shopping from shelves would ever have selected. You buy this for the video, but you expect a New product to look better. I'd give 5 stars for the contents and 2 for the appearance of the SteelBooks I received.

Have been a Star Trek fan since Next Generation and this series is a game changer. By the end of the season you see they found a way to bring both Abrams’ Star Trek feel and the previous television shows together into these episodes that feel like mini movies. Amazing Cast and effects. If you liked when on Enterprise, they incorporated the long form narrative during the last two seasons, this is what you’ve been waiting for. It’s what I’ve been waiting for!

I honestly wasn't expecting to like this at all after hearing all the talk about it. I must admit that I actually enjoyed watching this. Do I feel like it filled any sort of Star Trek specific gap in my life? No. But it didn't feel incompatible with Star Trek. It was OK Sci-Fi and actually seemed like a bit less "soap opera" than most Sci-Fi TV usually is.

Having been a fan of TNG, DS9, VGR, and to a lesser extent, TOS (because I didnt grow up with) and Enterprise, Discovery is far off of what was established ad Star Trek. It's very dark. I almost didnt want to keep watching. But as a loyal fan, I pressed on. I decided to finish it, partly because I wanted to give it a chance, to see what these new showrunners were trying to show me. And also because fan outcry and outrage led to changes in the upcoming Season 2. And with the way Discovery Season 1 ended (no spoiling) I'm encouraged that Discovery will get back to what we know and love about Star Trek.

Was elated to see they produced a bluray for this series. I snatched up quick for my dad who is a Star Trek fan. Alot of Trekkies do not enjoy this series but it is a great take on a classic universe.

Discovery has outstanding Visual Effects, the cast is great specialty Lieutenant Saru and First Officer Michael Gurnham. The Steelbook is the best one Best Buy was ever put out. As for the what the Klingon looked like one must remember that Klingon scientists used genetic material from human test subjects to create augmented soldiers which caused a viral pandemic that produces human-like features. Dr. Phlox of the Enterprise which is 95 years before Discovery founded a cure for the virus. So nobody knows what the Klingon looked like after the virus was stopped for they were that been seen for 100 years.

I saw the first run on CBS All Access. I was excited to have it back. However, I was aware due to the agreement between CBS and Paramount that things had to look slightly different. Now I don't like that the property is split and they had to make changes. I was also one that wished they moved it to the future. This takes place in the past, before kirk, and takes us through the klingon/federation war. It was not the worst but it was not the greatest series I have seen.
