The movies are enjoyable. As any Trekkie knows the odd # movies are rough some times where the even films are more enjoyable. I was hoping to get more than just the theatrical cuts like how the original series allows you to watch the original versions or enhanced versions

This is no simple upconversion, as some have written. To test this out for myself, I had the BD and most recent DVD release copies of II and VI running at the same time, (the DVD copy running about 15 seconds behind the BD copy for instant comparison), switching from one input to the other to compare picture and sound quality. For this test and to give an idea, my equipment is as follows:
TV: Sharp Aquos 1080p 32" LCD w/3 HDMI ports
BD: Sony's PlayStation 3
DVD: Sony's 1080p Upconvert model DVP NS-700H
Input/Transfer cables: Two Rocketfish HDMI cables (identical cables used for all of my HDMI attachments)
Sound System: Bose's first generation Acoustic Wave (looks like the Wave Radio, but about three times as tall and with four speakers instead of two), which likely translates to only a 2.0 sound system. Volume level was set exactly the same for each copy, as my TV remembers volumes set for each input independently.
The TV has a Flashback button on the remote, allowing me to switch between the two most recent functions used; for fast comparison, I switched between the two HDMI ports that carried the signals from the PS3 and the upconvert DVD player. (I've written a review on the model of DVD player if interested in the type). If one looks closely enough, the picture from the BD copies is sharper, more colorful and flows just a little more smoothly. The sound, however, is immediately distinguishable and FAR superior to the DVD track. While playing ST II, for example, I eventually came upon the scene where the Reliant attacks the Enterprise for the first time. In the seconds that the Reliant's phasers hit the Enterprise, the DVD track was moderate in sound. The BD track, however, was so booming that it made my cat jump out of her skin and run full bore from the living room into the back bedroom.
The video and audio was just as impressive watching ST VI. My only complaint on this disc is that you must find the proper English subtitles channel (#6 on my PS3) to see the Klingon translations while not having to also read every line uttered regularly...I had to search through my menu to enable that little detail.
It is true that both II and VI (which are the only two I have watched on this set so far) have extra scenes that were not included in the BD release...the most recent DVD releases have these extra scenes, but the BD releases were theatrical only. I enjoy more scenes, especially if they help make the storyline make a little more sense (and in ST II's case, a little more detail to Spock and McCoy's classic argument about Genesis), but this is a small gripe.
This re-release onto BD makes watching the already-enjoyable classic movies even more enjoyable. The sound on my old but still very excellent sounding Bose unit is extremely impressive, and I can only imagine what the 7.1 surround would sound like on such a system.
Definitely recommended!

Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection
Posted .

Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection is available on Blu-Ray and DVD. Ten years after the original show ended in 1969, Star Trek fans or Trekkies had been waited for the original cast and crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise to return on the big screen. Although Star Trek: The Motion Picture wasn't a blockbuster hit in 1979, it did bring back most of the original cast on the big screen. I was a bit disappointed that the Director's Edition wasn't included in this box set, but the original version was. After Star Trek: The Motion Picture, fans were wondering will there be a sequel. The answer was "Yes!" Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was better than the first film. They should had made this the first film instead of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Star Trek II didn't include the additional scene that was included in the last DVD, but it was restored and remastered for better picture and sound quality and High Definition. Star Trek III: The Search For Spock continues where Star Trek II left off and it was a good movie. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was my favorite of the Star Trek movie and continues where Star Trek III left off. It was the best Star Trek film and the funniest movie ever. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier was the worst movie ever. The special effects and the scripts weren't that good. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was a good film. The movie didn't included the additional scene that was included in the last DVD. Although this was supposed to be the final voyage of the original crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, that will have to wait till 2009 to get the original crew back on the big screen. This time the new Star Trek movie introduced the new actors playing Kirk, Spock, Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov. Space, the final frontier, these are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise, its five year mission to explore strange new world, to seek out new life and new civilization, to boldly go where no man has gone before. The adventures continue...

Great Box Set

If you are a Trekkie, this set is well worth the money. Do not pay attention to anyone that says these are not true HD. They play in true 1080p and the sound is awesome. I can see and hear a huge difference between the BD and DVD versions of these films. Every disk has lots of extras, like interviews with the cast and such. Plus there is a seventh disk that has Shatner, Nimoy, Stewart, Frakes and Goldberg all together in one room talking ST.
The downsides to the set are: No Director's Cut, only ST1 and ST5 have deleted scenes, the trailer for ST-11 and ST TOS season one BD plays at the begining of every single disk (once would have been enough.) And ST4 had a glitch where it stopped playing for a few seconds (but that may have just been my machine or that particular disk.)
Overall I am very happy with this set and I would reccomend it to any Trekkie that has a BD player and a HD TV. I am looking forward to seeing ST 7-11 come out on BD.

A bargain for Star Trek fans

There seems to be some confusion as to whether these 6 movies are in 1080p. First, the back cover of the outside of the boxed set states, "The films have been digitally remastered and The Wrath of Khan has been fully restored in high definition..." I can see how some people take this to mean that ST II is in HD, and the others aren't. Now, the box contains an insert that states THE FIRST SIX MOTION PICTURES are "Digitally remastered in high definition and The Wrath of Khan is fully restored."
I've watched the first movie so far, and it looks very much like full 1080p to me. For the most part, it looked as if you were looking through a window. The funny thing is, on a few scenes of "The Motion Picture," some of the background visuals looked very grainy (such as nebula clouds on a couple of occasions).
So far, I'm very happy with my purchase (sale price of $65, down from about $100). You're talking about $6.50 per BD, plus a bonus 7th BD of interviews.

Are you sure it's not time for a colorful metaphor

Let's face it! There's nothing dramatically new in this re-release. It's only the theatrical version and not the special editions (which in the case of the Star Trek: the Motion Picture, that's a blessing). But it is Blu-Ray and loaded with special features not previously released. With the higher quality in picture and sound, how can you not resist. A trailer for the 2009 Star Trek is a nice bonus, as well. As a Star Trek fan, your Blu-Ray collection would not be complete without it. I can forgive the slow plot-driven Motion Picture and the mis-step of the Final Frontier long enough to embrace the collection. Get it on sale if you can and when it occurs because although it is worth the regular price, it is more logical to hold out for the sale.

Very Nice Box Set!

This box set is worth the dough! I got mine locally from BB on release day. PQ is so much better than the DVD versions, which I also own. The 7.1 Dolby TrueHD lossless audio mixes are outstanding; you feel like you are sitting at the Captain's chair!
Don't be fooled by many of the negative reviews on Amazon or here. The DNR issue is blown out of proportion and should be a concern only if you watch movies on very large screens (say 65" - 100"). ST TMP looks great in HD but seems to be the film most folks are complaining about. All the films were digitally mastered in HD and all are presented in 1080p/24.
If you are a visual perfectionist and will wait for the next release of Star Trek, that's fine. You should wait. But your decision does not change the fact that this box set offers real value in HD entertainment to Star Trek fans. I highly recommend this set.

Part II, IV, & IV are the best!

If you are a real trekkie, these are the movies for you! I remember watching these as a kid and really enjoyed them. I started to get into it again once the new version of Star Trek came out a couple years ago. I, then, started watching the original series and decided to buy this set to complete the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. I'm a big sci-fi fan and love the plots and background references of this classic saga. Part II & VI are by far the best films directed by Nicholas Meyer. Part IV had my attention only because I remember the episode on the original series where they went back in time in the mid 20th century & had a comedic mood to the story. Part III was good, but Kirstie Alley remaining as Saavik would've been most impressive (my opinion).
I wasn't so impressed with the shipping. I ordered my product about 9 weeks before I received my product and I wasn't notified of my order being shipped back. However, Best Buy worked with me once I notified them and gave me a low price and no shipping charges. I was able to forgive them. Lol!

Excellent Blue Ray Movie

These are great movies for Blue Ray. I have the Pioneer BDP-320 and the Pioneer VSX-918 surround reciever and it really sounds great. The quality of the picture is excellent and I found the extras to be interesting. I for one have no problems because of the equipment I have and I don't buy something just to complain about it later. If you enjoy Star Trek, you will enjoy this set. I did wait for it to be on sale as the prices of Blue Ray are still high but in time they will come down just as DVD's did.

I bought this. and no way is this an upconversion. They look stunning and no upconversion looks this good. I put in Khan, put in III and they look the same. Don't listen to people who have no idea what they are talking about. They don't work for Paramount and have no idea what was done, they are just guessing. If it did not say Khan was remastered on the package they would have nothing to complain about. If you are a fan buy this, you will not be disappointed. Four stars for the set not having both versions of each film.

Sure it's not Star Wars but you can't compare them anyway. Star Trek is its own thing with an awesome fan base. If you loved the TV shows, you will love this! That's not to say that you won't love it if you haven't, they are still just as enjoyable, well maybe not the 1st or 5th one but still a great set nonetheless.
