After the cancellation of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars", I, like many, was disappointed that Disney let the series go out rather than finish right up into Episode III. But, when they foretold that they would have their own series that will answer key questions about Episode VII, I had to check it out. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed.
The show, Star Wars Rebels, takes place 5 years before the Battle of Yavin (which means it's 5 B.B.Y. in Star Wars chronology), and the Empire holds a tight grip on the galaxy. The planet of Lothal is one of them, and they are forced to endure the brutality of the Empire. For 14 year Ezra Bridger, a con-artist and street rat who bears some resemblance to Aladdin, surviving on the streets is easy for anyone who knows how to fool a Stormtrooper. But his resistance gets himself caught in a larger rebellion against the Empire, and is now working with the crew of the spaceship "The Ghost" amongst others who hold the Empire in disregard. There's Kanan, a Jedi in hiding, Sabine, a Mandalorian with a knack for graffiti and explosions, Zeb, a Lassat with a short temper and a habit of hurting Stormtroopers, Hera, a Twi'lek pilot that leads the crew, and Chopper, a grumpy astromech droid who's supposed to be the polar opposite of R2-D2.
The series' strong points is its connection to the greater Star Wars lore, from the Clone Wars and beyond. Mentions towards Order 66, the Great Jedi Purge, and the actions the Empire took really give a reason to why the Rebellion was formed in the first place, and it even gives more insight towards Bail Organa's own role in creating it. Not only that, but the character development is well thought out, and the relationships between the crew of the Ghost is as meaningful as it can get.
The villains themselves pose a genuine threat. The cold and cunning Agent Kallus has proven himself to be a worthy adversary equivalent to that of General Grievous. The mysterious Sith Inquisitor makes himself out to be much like Darth Maul, in that the truth surrounding his origins and what capabilities in the dark side he has keep us guessing for all season. Even Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader appear in the show, as do some special guests (I'm not saying who, but Clone Wars fans will be very pleased)
It's true that Rebels is no Clone Wars, but its a worthwhile show that I would highly recommend. Just play close attention though. If the fan theory is to be believed, Ezra may become Episode VII's main bad guy, Kylo Ren, and this is the place to check out that possible descent to the dark side.

I really enjoyed this series. It is aimed toward kids but adults will enjoy also, as the series continues it gets a little darker. It only lasted four seasons and I really miss it.

Ever wanted to know what happened in the 20-some years between ep. 3 and 4? This is it. The story follows a fairly diverse crew of Rebels working to make as much trouble for the new Empire as possible 5 years before ep.4.
Characters include Kanan, a Jedi in hiding, Herra, the green-skinned Twi'lek pilot of the Ghost, Garazeb, the muscle of the crew, Sabine, a former Mandolorian turned rebel, Chopper, the astromech droid with an attitude, and Ezra, the young "hopeful" that finds himself joined with the crew and aspiring to be a Jedi.
There really isn't a whole lot to say without giving away spoilers. The series does start out kind of slow at first, but it is still entertaining. They do have cameos from past characters every once in a while. I have read a lot of reviews that give negative marks for characters being kind of bland and 1-dimensional (the irony of being in 3D) and that the stories aren't deep and don't last very long. What most of these people forget is that this series is aimed at kids, not adults. This should be apparent to anyone since it's shown on Disney.
However, that does not mean it's not a fun series to watch. It certainly has its moments that make you glad to be a Star Wars fan. There are most definitely some moments where you can tell it's mainly for kids, but if you go into it knowing that, you will enjoy yourself.
The animation does not follow the Clone Wars style, slightly more 'cartoonish', some may appreciate this after Clone Wars' blocky and square style of modeling.
A bit of trivia, Zeb's model is based on the original concept design for Chewbacca way back in the 70's, much like the new X-Wing for ep.7. The entire series of Rebels is based on the idea that the Clone Wars series was originally slated to be, following a small crew of "rebels" in a cargo ship as they helped in the battle against Doku and the droid army.
Now, can't wait for season 2!

Star Wars Rebels Season One is a fantastic dive back into the Star Wars Universe. This series IS a part of Star Wars canon and is a worthy entrant.
The show follows a young Jedi-Padawan, Ezra, and Kanan, a Padawan during the Clone Wars who never formally completed his training. Kanan meets Ezra during the first episode and, despite not being a Jedi-Master himself, begins to train Ezra.
They team with Hera, a fantastic female pilot; Zeb, a gruff Lasat; Sabine, Mandalorian human female weapons expert; and their droid - Chopper, a spunky droid in vein of R2D2.
Rebels takes place after the Clone Wars and before Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. It is rumored that Rebels will lead directly into the 2017 Star Wars film: Rogue One.
This series appeals to everyone from myself to my 4 year old niece, who's favorite character is Zeb.
This includes the entire first season

The ground floor to a great series. Rebels does an amazing job of capturing the spirit of Star Wars. While Clone Wars was Epic in scale, having multiple characters and locations, Rebels focus on a small group and the struggles of one planetary system under The empires rule. This formate allows character development on a level similar to the original trilogy. The first season does have some episodes that slow the pacing of the season and don’t feel relevant until the whole of the series is viewed. Voice acting is excellent and the animation was above the average for CGI television at the time, and due to the stylization of the art, ages well.
A worthwhile start to a good series.

When Clone Wars came out, I wasn't enamored of the animation style. It felt too crude to me. Since I know the state of the art allows much more realistic character animation (and backgrounds, like ships, droids, and other stuff were pretty realistic), I knew it was a conscious choice. It just wasn't my preference. With Rebels, the style has been "softened" somewhat. Characters still have just a bit of the previous blockiness (especially hair looks clumpy instead of natural), but it's been toned down. And it feels like backgrounds have been improved even more. There were scenes of storm troopers and other things which looked almost photo realistic.
The stories have also been softened a bit. The overall feel of the stories here is much more reminiscent of the original movie trilogy. There's still a lot of serious stuff going on, but there's more of the humor and light character moments that seemed to be missing from Clone Wars.

I really enjoy this show. Its first season was shortened but the writers did a great job of getting you to invest in the characters with out it feeling rushed. The stories are great; right mix of action and drama. It's not all explosions and TIE fighter fights but there's definitely enough excitement to keep things moving. The voice casting is excellent and (spoiler alert) in Season 2 James Earl Jones returns as Darth Vader.
I definitely recommend this to any fan of quality animated series and of course, to any Star Wars fan.

This is one of the few bits of Lucas-era Star Wars extended universe that Disney kept canon. It's a great series from the perspective of Jedi trainee on the run after the destruction of the Jedi order. It takes place between movies 3 and 4 and shows the Star Wars universe from the perspective of runaways trying to make a living in the shadow of the empire at its peak. Great animation, voice acting, story, and likeable characters. Safe for kids and good enough for adults to enjoy as well.

I loved The Clone Wars. The stories were excellent, the animation was very much in keeping with that shown in the feature film, and it had six great seasons.
Now, there's Rebels, the latest Star Wars animated series that takes place between Episodes III and IV, and I am enjoying it very much. I've always favored the original trilogy era, and Clone Wars did a fine job with the Prequel era....this show is doing a great job in the early days of the Rebellion and Empire. Good humor, good action, good animation.

Star Wars Rebels is a lot of fun for the whole family. My kids love it and I'm really into it myself. I personally didn't get hooked on the Clone Wars series but Star Wars Rebels has me invested in the characters and stories. Maybe it's because this series has more of an original trilogy feel to it than Clone Wars. It's about a small band of Rebels causing trouble with the Empire. And there's Stormtroopers. It's good stuff and I'd highly recommend it to Star Wars fans of all types.
