I bought the Switch specifically for this game and it was worth every penny. I'm about 10 hours into the gameplay, but from what I've seen so far this will be a classic that sits well beside the previous Galaxy entries. The visuals are stunning, music beautiful and gameplay solid like usual. This game is more of an open world and less linear than the galaxy games which I like as it encourages exploration. A lot of new & exciting twists and turns in the Mario formula that I won't spoil. Totally worth buying a switch for. Enjoy!

    The Next Evolution of Mario

Mario's been around for over 30 years, and it's equal parts shocking and amazing to see how well he's doing. Super Mario Odyssey is a culmination of everything that makes Mario, and Nintendo, great. It's a game that anyone from 1 to 99 years old could enjoy, especially with the new Assist Mode that helps younger plays know where to go next, and it's also something new gamers and experienced games can enjoy alike. The gameplay is blissful perfection, with extremely unique levels that are fun to play around in and explore with tight controls. The kinds of moves you can pull off allow you to play the game in infinitely more ways than intended. This is all done with Mario's new trusty companion, Cappy. Cappy is essentially Mario's sentient hat. You can throw him in any direction to "cap"ture enemies, jump higher or farther, or break boxes and question blocks. There are also so many ways to play the game. Interested in motion controls? Try holding both JoyCons controllers separately. You can throw Cappy with a flick of the wrist. Want to play with a more traditional control style? Try putting both JoyCons on the included Grip, or buy the Pro Controller (my personal recommendation). Every control style includes HD Rumble, which makes the rumbles in-game feel very realistic in your hands, and Gyro aiming, which means you just have to move the controller around to aim (there's an option to turn this off if you'd like, I think Zelda and Splatoon do Gyro better). The story is also really good. You may think it's nothing more than Bowser kidnapping Peach, and technically you're right, but there are so many specific moments within the game that I'd highly recommend not spoiling for yourself. Graphically the game is stunning. Even though it only runs at 900p, the art style really works in its favor. I've played this game on a 55' 4K TV and it's one of the best things I've seen on there. You can actually see the individual hair's in Mario's mustache! If you own a Nintendo Switch, you owe it to yourself to get this game. It takes advantage of all the Switch hardware has to offer, it's extremely fun to play with all its unique levels and tight controls, and it has a pretty solid story for a Mario game. It lives up to all the hype surrounding it, and it's highly recommended.

    Good, but kind of short

Great 3D Mario game. Beautiful graphics, with a great platforming mechanics, and great music tracks, that could* easily stand up next to Mario 64, and Super Mario Sunshine. *I say could because I only really have two gripes with the game. First is how short it is Story wise. I understand its a Mario game, and it can be hard to stretch out a story of rescuing a princess. Super Mario Odyssey just seems way shorter than expected. I was able to beat the story in about a day, only getting the bare minimum needed to move on to the next area. The second is the lack of variety with the bosses. You're introduced to the only 5 bosses you'll ever fight within the first few worlds, and then those 5 bosses are just re-used over and over for the rest of the story. Mechanics for these bosses don't really change either. they just add more things to dodge. Its for these reasons, I feel its not quite as memorable as Super Mario 64, or Super Mario Sunshine, but It's still a wonderful game, filled with nostalgia for old time fans, as well as a bunch of cool new content for new fans. All in all its a great game, just wish it was longer with a larger boss variety.

    Solid platforming, fantastic level design

As a long-time fan of Nintendo games in general, and 3d Mario platformers specifically, I can say without hesitation that Super Mario Odyssey is my favorite so far. The controls and camera are exceptional. The motion controls provide a great supplement to the standard controls, and provide new abilities. I also never had to fight the camera, or take a "leap of faith". As for the level design, Odyssey turns to a more Super Mario 64 style of levels. The levels are large for a Mario title, and a have a mini-"Open World" aspect to them. Unlike Super Mario 64, there is no hub-world, so you travel between levels directly.. Each level has its own unique style, and is pure joy to explore. Behind virtually every corner are some coins, or a power moon, or some kind of Easter egg. Power Moons can be collected one after another, without losing your place, or being sent to the beginning of the level. Some are cleverly hidden, others unlocked by solving a puzzle, obtained by beating a boss, and half-a-dozen other different ways. You will likely find it a challenge to collect all of them. Hints are offered, but not foisted on you. Amiibo can help locate power moons, and the Odyssey amiibo offer particularly special benefits. No amiibo are required, however, to fully enjoy the game. It should be said that it is not a difficult game, nor is it intended to be. There is no level with punishing difficulty, and the boss fights are underpowered and even repetitive. Death's only penalty is a loss of a few coins. In my opinion, the ease of the boss fights do not ultimately take away from the supremely enjoyable experience of the rest of the game. However, some might be turned off by this lack of difficulty. If you are one who plays games for the innate challenge, I would recommend trying this out before buying, if possible. Challenge can be sought out, as a sort of aside from the main game. The controls and abilities of Mario in this title offer more than I've seen in previous titles, and virtually beg those with the skill to push them to the limits. Overall, I highly recommend this game to Switch owners. It is a fantastic platformer, with something in it for everyone. It hints and nods at nostalgia, but never relies on it. New gamers will be challenged to learn 3d platforming, but should find the learning curve to be a gentle slope, with rewards every step of the way. Experienced, and even expert gamers will find the level design to be varied, and a blast to explore. This is one title that will likely be in the libraries of almost every Switch owner.

    Perfect Game for Young Kids

This is the perfect game for kids learning to play video games! My son is 6 years old and just started getting into video games. It is hard for them to navigate a joystick. He and I would play, I would play as Mario and he would play as Cappy. This helped him learn to navigate using a joystick effectively. The game is very fun! Using Cappy to take control of different enemies is a unique game experience that adds variety. The "open world" concept is cool for a Mario game! The only con I can think of is that the camera angle can be frustrating, but that's a minor complaint.

    The Next TRUE 3D Mario

This is the return the the 3D mario formula that was first introduced in Mario 64 and later expanded upon in Sunshine. The sequel to Sunshine (Galaxy) went for a more linear approach, focusing on point A to B challenges set around themes. 3D World took the 2D formula and accurately conveyed that feeling in a 3D space. Odyssey goes back to the more open world exploratory nature of Mario's first 3D outing and expands upon it with a variety of new moves that allow for some complicated jumps and traversals. Even with these added mechanics, the game still seems to be accessible enough to allow a player who may not be as skilled to slowly and gradually learn and grow as a player. Levels and challenges are designed with those two players in mind, allowing for some amazing platforming or simpler paths. Anyone who claims the game to be "too easy" is not taking advantage of the amazing move sets. This is a game where anyone can find challenge in it if you look for it, it is a game that truly "captures" (pun intended) the joy of a 3D Mario platformer. The game goes out of its way to reward risky behavior and exploration, the game is always beckoning the advanced player to try to "make the jump" to hidden areas or hard to reach spots. The amount of content in the game is astounding. With over 800 "moons" to collect, a completionist (myself) will have plenty to do. The game does "give out" a health amount of moons with little effort on the player, which for some might seem too easy, but for every easy catch there is at least 5 challenging, hidden or clever moons. The game is big into rewarding a player who is having fun. Overall Nintendo has shown once again that, in their mind, a game has one purpose: for the player to have fun. TL;DR version: This game is 120% fun, with a side of Mario charm.

I am just lost for words. The spirit of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine lives on in this game. It was as if I stepped into a portal to my childhood. I highly recommend the "single joy-con in each hand" motion control scheme. The motions controls feel so intuitive and really enhance the gameplay. Cappy serves as a great sidekick, with his boomerang and capture abilities providing a refreshing take on the classic 3D Mario Mechanics. Visually, it is a gorgeous game. It maintains 60 fps consistently in both mobile and docked. There seems to be a variety of different environments in this game, unlike Super Mario Galaxy and Sunshine. While those games followed a common theme, Odyssey takes influence from Super Mario 64 and Super Mario World in that there is a (Spoilers) desert world, ghost world. tropical world, metro world, etc. The music is phenomenal. I recommend that everyone use a headset to truly appreciate it. I had chills running down my spine once I heard the theme from the Switch Presentation Trailer for Odyssey. No other franchise has made as big of an impact on the gaming industry as Mario. He is the Micky Mouse of gaming. This game can be enjoyed by anyone. Enthusiast gamers. Father/Mother playing with his or her kids. Teenagers. Anyone. I had lost faith in Nintendo during the Wii U generation. They have absolutely blown me away with putting out masterpieces such as Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. These 2 games make the Switchh worth it. I must also add that this year has been incredible for gaming. Besides Mario and Zelda, we had Persona 5, Cuphead, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nier, Nioh, Divinity. Instead of debating Game of the Years. We should declare 2017 as the Year of the Games. I hope everyone enjoys these games as much as I have.

While it may sound backhanded to say that this is the best Mario game since Galaxy, it's not intended as such. Odyssey is spectacular. I've been playing Mario games since the very beginning, so I like to think I know a thing or two about them. Super Mario Odyssey may well be the best 3D Mario game ever made, and it's in my personal top 3 Mario games of all time. As you might've seen advertised, the big new feature is Mario's sentient hat companion Cappy, who lets him possess many of the denizens of the various kingdoms you visit in this adventure. While the highlight of many Super Mario games throughout the years has always been the various suits and power-ups players can get their hands on, being able to outright become many of the creatures you come across is a twist on that formula that lets players do all kinds of new and sometimes unexpected things. While the game is - as expected - family friendly, it provides layers of challenges for players of all ages. Some of the (optional) tasks in the game are outright hair-tearing, for only the most skilled players, but that's part of what achievement is all about! However, while the game is designed to appeal to everyone, Nintendo took the time to add some extra nods to long-time fans, not only in the worlds and the critters/characters you happen across, but through setpieces and a spectacular mid-game musical number that old-timers like me have to appreciate. If you have a Switch, get this game. If you don't have a Switch, get one, and then get this game. Whether you're a new Mario fan or an old one, this is the definitive 3D Super Mario experience.

It's a main-line Mario game. It's polished and fun and full of silliness. The control gimmick in this one is excellent and worth your time. The only thing holding it off of 5 stars is that the 2nd player assistance option is severely under-baked. I think I'd prefer they had left it off entirely, as it just disappoints.

Mario Odyssey is not only the best Mario game to date but also best game on Switch....period! Levels are really nicely designed and the graphics look great (even in handheld mode). There are ton of places to explore and hidden items to find so this game will keep a player occupied for a long time. I would highly recommend this game to every Switch owner and if you don't own a Switch, buy it just to play this game.

From the moment you boot it up, this game proves why it deserves a spot among the best on the Nintendo Switch. Visually, it’s one of the most stunning titles available on the system. The attention to detail, vibrant colors, and smooth animation push the Switch hardware to impressive limits, offering a truly beautiful and immersive experience whether you're playing docked or handheld. The soundtrack is equally stellar, each track perfectly complements the mood of the gameplay, from high-energy action sequences to quiet, reflective moments. It's the kind of music that sticks with you long after you’ve put the controller down. Speaking of controllers, the game plays like a dream. The controls are tight, responsive, and intuitive, making it accessible for newcomers while still offering enough depth for seasoned players. Every movement and action feels fluid and satisfying, creating a gameplay loop that’s hard to put down. What really makes this game shine, though, is just how fun it is. Whether you're playing solo or sharing the experience with others (there is a simple 2 player mode), there's a genuine joy in exploring, discovering, and progressing through its world. It strikes a perfect balance of challenge and accessibility, making it an ideal pick for players of all ages. In short, this is a top-tier Switch title that checks every box: breathtaking visuals, an unforgettable soundtrack, polished controls, and gameplay that keeps you coming back. If you’re looking for a game that showcases the very best of what the Switch has to offer, look no further.

I bought Super Mario Odyssey on the same day I bought my Nintendo Switch Console, it was actually the only game I had for the first few months. I think this is an amazing game, that is more than worth the money! I grew up playing Mario games, and this newest edition to the series is quite a bit different than the games that came before. It is most like the Galaxy series, but has a lot of short 2D sections that through back to the original game. Mario Odyssey isn't a 'true' Open-World game, but it really feels huge, and fun to explore, using a spaceship to travel between locations. A cool feature is the motion controls, which can be used when holding the joy-cons. But I also have enjoyed playing the game in the controller grip, but then you can't use your right hand to throw your cap. After completing the main story, there are a lot of more challenging things to go back and do, as well as an additional world, so it's easy to sink a lot of hours into. Also, graphics are beautiful!

Growing up I have been a devoted Nintendo fan, and I had my fair share of hours socked into Mario games. I can say without a doubt this game brings back the feeling of playing Mario 64, but with a new twist and new challenges. The game doesn't take long to beat. About 1-2 days if you breeze through it on the weekend, or about a good week & a half for us working folks. "Completionist" might take longer, due to the game wanting you to backtrack and explore other locations in the worlds. The game graphics are captivating and the colors are vibrant and refreshing. The motion controls bring a new concept that can not be compared to the wii or wii U games, which is a good thing considering the switch is trying to break from the mold. Overall, I thoroughly enjoy the game. I continue to go back to it and explore places and attempt to get tricky moons (that are not required to beat the game) and find little easter eggs that Nintendo snuck into the game to give that little extra TLC. This game is recommend for all levels (/expertise) and ages. This game gives an option for beginner players (be it kids or adults) for help and walk through, but it also rewards the devoted experts who can do without the help who can rethink the motion mechanics and reach platforms of negative space that have rewards at the top.

Mario Odyssey is a joy. This game has many moments that leave you smiling. Mario is one of the few titles that can do that; its charm is unlike any other and even after decades, it still succeeds to leave an everlasting impression. Gameplay is FUN. The most important characteristic of any game... it's simply fun. There are simple mechanics to learn with the introduction of Cappy, but as you progress in the game, you realize there are many variations and combos one can do to accomplish a set goal. The world of Odyssey is also spectacular and each kingdom has its own unique personality. The story.. if any.. is more or less the same.. save peach, but its more about the journey that makes this game of one the best if not the BEST in the series. Music is also wonderful and there are few tracks I revisit out of leisure. Collecting moons can sometimes be underwhelming but other times... when you figure out how to reach that elusive moon... you feel very accomplished and thrilled. The replay value is also great. there's a lot to do once you think you've finished the game... NOPE... still a whole lot of content to explore. That is what makes Nintendo great... they offer full, complete gaming experiences. if you own a switch, this is a MUST. BUY IT!

Super Mario Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch is a must-play masterpiece. Its innovative "capture" mechanic, using Mario's hat Cappy to control enemies and objects, injects incredible creativity into gameplay and exploration. The diverse and vibrant kingdoms are packed with secrets and collectibles, encouraging you to explore every nook and cranny. While the sheer number of collectibles can feel a bit much at times, the core gameplay is polished, joyful, and constantly surprising. Odyssey is a triumphant reinvention of the 3D Mario formula and a delightful adventure from start to finish.
