I've alway been a big Smash Bros fan, but I was skeptical when it went to a handheld system. Is it going to play well on a smaller screen? Are all the buttons there to properly control it all? Is it going to be limited in characters or stages or... something? There's gotta be a catch, right?
Rest assured the game is fantastic. I was playing on a 3DS XL, so the screen was bigger than traditional 3DSs, but lets be honest it's still small compared to any TV. Game still looked great. Animations are quick and smooth, you can see everything clearly, and even when you pause and zoom in, the detail is all there. Game looks brilliant.
Controls work well too. The analog nub on the 3DS takes a little getting used to, but once you got it, it's fine. Everything is responsive and easy to figure out.
Lastly there is no shortage of characters or content. Game is packed with over 40 characters, a ton of stages to play on, a bunch of bonus modes, tons of unlockable stuff, online play. Game is PACKED with things to do.
This is an excellent game that is a ton of fun, and overall great value. There is so much to do in it. Find and friend and go bananas. You won't be disappointed.

Yes Smash bros for the 3DS! What more can you ask! I can play this for hours and hours and never get bored! Whether im at home or outside, this game is enjoyable. For all ages and definitely will be playing for many years to come! Loads of characters and fun stages, this is a must own for all 3ds owners! Plus, Nintendo has released more characters and stages. Of course you have to pay extra, but it will be worth it at the end of the day!

I have been a Smash Bros. fanboy since Nin64. The 3DS version is similar, yet, different from the WiiU version. It has it's own perks and bonuses. The control on the 3DS is fairly efficient... very few slips or mistakes.
Content wise, very fun game! Rich colors, beautiful backgrounds (for a handheld) and so much content to unlock... and now that we're able to use Amiibo's (need adapter for 1st gen 3ds XL, but not for the 2nd gen), that will add many more quality hours of game play!

I have been a pretty big fan of the Smash Bros. games since its debut on the N64. I played it again on the Gamecube, Wii, and the Wii U.
I have always wondered why the they never made a version of the game for the previous Gameboys/DS consoles. My guess is that the previous handhelds weren't powerful enough for that type of game to be designed properly.
Well, I must say that the game was well worth the wait. The game plays smoothly on the 3DS/2DS. The graphics are different from its Wii U counter part. That's mainly because the handhelds aren't HD. Despite the change in look, the gameplay is where the game shines. It's still the same great 4 player combat found on the previous versions.
You can play with other people in person, or online.
Nintendo has always fallen behind Sony and Microsoft in regards to a great online ecosystem for any of their consoles. That trend continues. Nintendo's friend code system is abysmal. Why they won't spend the money to make their own network is beyond me.
Anyway, aside from the frustrating online system, the game was always best played with people in the same room... or I guess in the same room with four separate 2DS/3DS'.
The game is great. Nintendo continues to milk their 1st party franchise titles... virtually ignore any 3rd party support, and push away any hardcore fan by not designing a dedicated network.

I was worried the fast-paced, chaotic, skill-intensive, multiplayer-centric Smash. Bros. franchise might not fit well on a handheld. For me, the series is about enjoying multiplayer with friends on the same couch, and obviously this version would be unable to completely replicate that unless we all had 3DS systems. After playing several hours solo, however, I felt right at home and the versatility offered by a portable system to play Smash Bros. is incredible.
The various single-player options are great and give plenty of ways to enjoy and improve. Online multiplayer works well and thankfully caters to both crowds: those who play for fun and those who play to compete.
Controls are less precise than using a Gamecube controller due to the analog nub's lack of directional grooves, but I found myself getting used to this very quickly.
Overall, this version for the 3DS will likely be overshadowed by competitive crowds for the Wii U version with its upgraded visuals and more precise controls but it is a worthy addition to the series and a fantastic implementation on a handheld platform.

If you like Smash brothers and don't have a Wii U then you absolutely need to get this game. It plays amazing even on the 3DS. It's perfect on the go even if you own a Wii U since you can meet up with random people and just duke it out. "Settle it in Smash" works well with that!
Replay value is timeless. I still play the N64 smash bros even and will continue probably forever.
I do have to say on the 3DS the Smash run mode is way better then Wii u's Board game mode.

This is arguably the best game on the 3ds as of right now. Close to 50 characters to choose from all with unique fighting styles. Also comes with multiple modes besides the classic fighting mode. Online is where I've spent most of my time and works pretty well. I experienced lag online from time to time but nothing too severe. The fact that you can take this game with you and battle other people on the fly is amazing and one of the main reasons I have a 3ds.

Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS is an outstanding game. The new characters are a blast to try out, the controls are almost as great as they were on the GameCube (but that's only because of the inevitably poor ergonomics of the handheld 3DS itself), and the new Smash Run mode is well-designed. Though it's not the same as playing on a big screen, this game accomplishes a whole lot for the limited and slightly outdated hardware that it's running on.

Super Smash Bros 4 is a great game and is the most fun 3DS game I've thus played. The gameplay is a little faster than Brawls, which was my main gripe with the 3rd game in the series. The gravity is also higher which I enjoy, and tripping is absent, which I also like. There are so many different game modes now, which is confusing, but I love the standard smash and all-star modes. I also love how many characters and stages there are and how most of the stages don't constantly move and shift like they did in Brawl. The online play is solid and is fun. Although I consider this a 3DS must have, I view the game as third best in the series, with Brawl in second and Melee first. My gripes with the game are as follows:
1) The 3DS analog stick doesn't feel strong enough to withstand years of playing this game. If the player could set movement to the D- Pad, then this wouldn't be a major problem.
2) The screen zooms out too much when having a 4-man smash. This problem is kept to a minimum with the 3DS xl's big screens, but is a major issue if you play on a 2DS or 3DS
3) The music is not as good as Melee's or Brawl's, especially the Main Theme Song however its awesome that it lets you play whatever music that you like from the soundtrack
4)Many of the characters have attack sets that are just clones of another character (Toon Link with Link, Falco with Fox)

First off, I received this game in the mail from Best Buy when they said it would, no issues. Now let's talk about the game specifically.
Some of the differences between this and the Wii-U version is that it includes Smash Run, which is basically where you run around and defeat enemies for several minutes to try to beef up your stats before fighting against other people in a special competition. It's really fun, but it does get kind of boring after a while. It also has several different maps and characters as well as this weird street pass game "StreetSmash."
The controls take a little bit of getting used to for playing a SSB game on a handheld, but they work okay.
Like the wii-u version, it doesn't really have a true story mode like the subspace emissary on Brawl (which I miss) but there are a lot of different things you can do if you get tired of smash. As far as frame rate and graphics go, you can tell they had to make some sacrifices to put it on the 3ds, but they're excellent for a handheld game.
Finally, there's the main fighting mode. Like other smash games, there are a lot of options to customize the game that can cater to both casual and hard-core gamers (That's possibly the #1 reason the Super Smash Bros series is so successful, it appeals to everyone). One thing I don't appreciate is that the overall game feels too "kiddish." Players will run and jump around like a bunch of bunnies and sometimes it just seems too cartoony even for a smash game. The combat is satisfying. There seems to be something different about it but I can't quite put my foot on it. I would consider it to have the second best combat next to Melee.
If you already own the Wii-u version, I don't think the additional content makes this worth a purchase unless you really like smash run or especially want to be able to play smash bros on the go. However, this is still an excellent game and it's definitely worth playing Smash 4 in general.

Albeit slightly repetitive, this is a game to play when you just want to have fun and not worry about trying to complete the story or things like that. Perhaps the strongest thing about this game is the fighting locations; some transform in the middle of battle and you can interact with virtually all of them. Additionally, all the characters, both new and old, are very fun to play as.

Really awesome game especially with the amiibo support. The amiibos make the game more interesting. Trying to defeat the amiibo at level 1 is easy, but once it hits level 50 it turns out to be a bit challenging. This game turns out to be even more fun especially with friends. Fighting one another and kicking eachothers butt inoreder to come out number 1! I truly love this game.

If your a fan of the series or not super smash on 3ds is the best fighting game on the handheld. The games 3d and graphics look great some of the cleanest I've seen in awhile.
Some pros for the game: a lot of character/arenas, lots of things to unlock for replay value. fun for hardcore fans or new comers to the series. Great soundtrack. many ways to play with friends either online or off. best graphics in a 3ds title. something for any Nintendo fan.
Now for the cons: the controls with the joystick can sometimes be hard to use. can be overwhelming for anyone who's never played the game before. When playing with 4 people the fighters can be really small on your screen specially with the regular 3ds. the smash run mode is confusing and frustrating at times probably my least favorite game mode I wish was replaced with something else.

I waited until the fall to purchas Smash Bros for 3ds. I hd never played any of the prior games of the series and I didn't understand the hubbub about the game. Well, after reading about the Wii U version and the amiibo functionality on the Wii U, and that the 3ds can be used as a controller for the Wii U, I was considering buying it on the 3ds. I then learned that the 3ds and the wii u versions were differnt and not exactly the same. I downloaded the demo. I found it fun and so I bought the game. The street pass intergration is a fun addition and can battle challengers by forcing a disk off the edge of a play space.
Game- it's a fighting game that has simple controls and is deceptively simple but underneath is a very complex fighting game.
Graphics-very good and the programmers are squeezing every ounce of CPU and GPU out of the 3ds. It sometimes drops frame rates but it is minor and I have found does not affect gameplay.
Replay Value- I have found myself playing this everywhere when I not at home. I have found the Home Run derby fun and the number of trophies is just insane.
Summary - very good version of Smash bros on a portable system that will also have amiibo support in the future that is fun to play on the go.

My son loves this game and that's all the matters to me. He's five years old and loves sharing everything with me so he wanted me to play a level with him. I loved the variety of characters I had to choose from and the graphics weren't bad at all. Keeps him entertained which is surprising because he has a short attention span. Five stars!

At first, I was concerned about the small screen and controls of the 3ds, or its ability to handle the chaos of smash. I have been pleasantly surprised. I was able to play all the characters I enjoyed from the Wii U version with no difficulty. The online play has been crisp and nearly lagless, and local play is flawless. Even at its most intense, the 3ds handled the game well, framerate never suffering. A great first showing for the series on a portable device.
