Great Basic Phone for Talking and Texting

The Samsung T199 is a great basic phone for talking and texting. The phone is almost as tall, almost as wide, and almost as thick as an iPhone 4, but the display is only 2". The display is large, easy to read, and colorful. If you program a name in the phonebook or subscribe to caller name ID service, both name and number will be displayed. The keypad is made of rubber not plastic so gripping feels sturdier. There are no buttons around the phone to accidentally press. Texting is easy but requires a lot of keystrokes because this is not a touchscreen or smartphone. The phone has no camera but can receive and store pictures and videos from text messaging. There is no Bluetooth capability. The phone can connect to the Internet at 3G speeds. The phone can be added to an existing account, not just prepaid. The phone also has features such as an organizer, calendar, calculator, media and games. Also, there are plenty of settings that can be tailored to your preferences. This is a great phone for users who want to primarily make and receive phone calls, but also want options such as texting and connecting to the Internet.

A Good Basic Phone for Older Folks

This is a great phone at a great price - for anyone who does not need all the smart phone capabilities, this is a perfect item for them. Phone calls & texts is all you need. The only thing that I wish this phone had was a keyboard to make texting a bit easier, but for the price point, there is not much to complain about. Unlocking these phones are pretty expensive relative to the phone price itself, so if you are looking to unlock this phone, look elsewhere for international travel.

Works fine as a backup phone

In some places you are not allowed to have "camera" so this phone is perfect for this situation. No Camera, No Wifi, No browser. Just perfect for a normal "phone" to call/text. The battery should be able to last you for days. So its good for backup phone (especially when you are travelling). Pro: Simple Phone No Camera, no Wifi Locked Phone --> Do not expect to use this phone outside t-mobile unless you request for unlocked code. Do not expect this phone to replace your main phone i.e. Android/iOS/Windows.

    Nice No Frills Device

This bar style cell phone is small, only about 4in tall and 2in wide, and has absolutely no frills whatsoever. It makes calls and sends texts, and that's pretty much it. It is simple and fairly intuitive to use, making it perfect for the older cell phone user, or an "in case of emergency" phone.

This phone does the basic job of receiving and making voice calls and exchanging texts well. I have never used any of the other functions such as WAP browser, or Calendar, I have an iPad for all my internet needs. You can not beat the price. Its sold as a burner phone, but I already have a family plan monthly account with T-Mobile, so I throw away the SIM that comes with the phone and just use the SIM I have from my old smartphone. Best thing, is if i destroy the phone, 20 bucks replaces it, no hastle, no insurance, no tug of war with the service provider to replace it. T-Moble's nationwide coverage isn't as good as any of the other major services but its pretty good. We used it on a recent 6500 road miles trip across the country and had about 85% coverage.

Will do for a backup or prepaid phone. For the price paid, it is almost a disposable phone. Battery lasts a long time, since there are no bells and whistles on the phone.

Needed a cheap phone when my phone broke I could text and make calls so I was good. People who are addicted to apps will not survive with this phone.

Price I think is right when you buy it less than what the SIM card charge is from T-Mobile, and if you ever have a broken phone and need a replacement to cover, what else can you expect other than getting your calls and texts. That is what I use it for and then replace the SIM with a prepaid SIM for visitors coming from out of country, I love this phone and again cannot beat it at the price.

Got this phone for a friend in a halfway house where a camera and internet are not allowed. Perfect for this application. I can also see it being a great first cell phone for kids.

Bought this for an old visiting relative who need a temporary phone. Does everything it should, is simple to the extreme (not even a camera!), and works well. I'm reminded of how long batteries used to last before we all got smartphones.

These phones are great for those of us who do not want a large monthly fee to have cell phone access. We keep them in our cars in case of emergency. With the initial $100 start up card, it then only costs us $10 a year to keep the plan and our unused minutes roll over. You can not beat the price for peace of mind!

Took me back 12 years to my old Samsung phone, except this is thinner and can't figure out how to send a text on it. It's very limited compared to some of the other phones. This is okay if all you want to do is make calls.
