TWe purchased the 98" and I have to say it is a spectacular tv. Makes your living room look like a movie theater! Crisp, clear and bright picture with easy set up and easy programming. We paired it with the TCL home theater sound system, and it is out of this world fabulous. We just love it as you can tell.

But then I am only 80 years old, and I have only been watching every evolution since the big box with the tiny picture in ‘51. I have had the best - shootout winners - from LG and Sony, but this TV is so incredible that it makes we believe that TCL is really doing something right! The one negative is that the sound is very underwhelming … but … last week there was a software update that noticeably improved it. Also, it is very encouraging to know that TCL is doing updates, particularly this close to its arrival on the scene. Since reviewers had all mentioned the sound, it seems that TCL is trying to keep their products up to the competition. So now, I am going for the QM9K and I can hardly wait. The TV is 98” and way past immersive. It draws me in and makes me a part of what is happening. I would like to see something better than this for $3000. which is what I paid!

Love the TV! Deep blacks, awesome backlighting that doesn’t bloom, and near OLED quality for a faction of the cost.
Only issue is the whine or hum you hear when you have the brightness at anything higher than 50%. I really don’t notice it when there’s lots of background noise or an average sounding scene, but once it gets quiet, it’s definitely noticeable. Not in a position to move this huge TV again as it’s hung on the wall, so just kinda going to deal with it at this point. I’ve read it’s something to do with the power supply, so doubt a firmware update can fix it. It’s still a good set, just wish it didn’t have this issue.
Absolute beast of a TV - beats a projector any day

Honestly, this thing is a game changer. I was debating between this 98-inch TCL and a high-end projector setup, and I am so glad I went with the TV.
The Unboxing & Setup (Heads Up):
First off, do not underestimate the size of this box. It is massive. You absolutely need 2-3 strong people to move it and lift it onto the stand or wall mount. Measure your doorways and stairwells before hitting "buy"—I had to take a door off its hinges to get it into the media room. Once it's up, though, it’s a showstopper. The "Zero Border" design looks slick; it’s basically all screen.
Picture Quality:
The brightness on this panel is insane (specs say 5000 nits, and you can really feel it). Unlike a projector that gets washed out if you open the blinds, this thing punches right through daylight.
Black Levels: The QD-Mini LED tech is the real deal. With the thousands of dimming zones, the blacks are almost OLED-level deep. I was worried about "blooming" (that halo effect around bright objects on dark backgrounds), but TCL’s new halo control system handles it incredibly well. Star wars space scenes look ink-black, not milky gray.
Upscaling: 4K content looks razor sharp. 1080p streaming content looks good, but if you watch a lot of really low-quality cable or old 720p sports broadcasts, you might notice some softness just because the screen is so huge. It exposes every flaw in the source material, but that's expected at 98 inches.
Gaming:
If you have a PS5 or Series X, this is a dream. It runs natively at 144Hz, and I haven't noticed any input lag.
Responsiveness: Playing shooters on a screen this size usually feels slow, but the response time here is snappy.
Features: It supports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, so I haven't seen any screen tearing. The "Game Bar" that pops up to show fps and settings is a nice touch, actually useful and not just a gimmick.
Sound & Features:
Audio: The built-in speakers are actually tuned by Bang & Olufsen this year (2.1.2 channel setup). They are surprisingly loud and clear for TV speakers, with decent height effects for Dolby Atmos. I still ended up hooking up my soundbar for that extra bass rumble, but you could definitely get away with just the TV audio for casual watching.
Smart OS: The Google TV interface is fast and snappy. It hasn't crashed on me yet, and the hands-free voice control actually works when my remote is lost in the couch cushions.
Remote: Speaking of the remote, it's backlit (finally!) which is huge for movie nights in the dark. It feels a bit longer than necessary but has a nice premium weight to it.
The Verdict:
It's not perfect—the anti-glare coating is good but can catch rainbow reflections if you have a bright light directly opposite the screen—but for the price, nothing touches it. It’s basically a wall of glass that makes sports and movies feel like you're in the stadium or theater. If you have the wall space, buy it.

The TCL 98QM8K is NOT interoperable with the Marantz AV7706, period.
This isn’t a “settings issue.”
This isn’t a “try a different cable” issue.
This is broken HDMI-CEC implementation on TCL’s side.
What’s broken (consistently):
Power OFF the TV → Marantz does NOT power off
TV remote → does NOT control Marantz volume
AV7706 just sits there saying “Muting” like it’s confused and disappointed
eARC audio sometimes works, but CEC is completely unreliable
“Quick Start” disable option does not exist on this model/firmware
Changing HDMI Pass Through, resets, cable swaps — all useless
These are core, basic features for a modern home theater setup. If you’re selling a “flagship” 98-inch TV in 2024/2025, HDMI-CEC and eARC should not be a science experiment.
Why this is unacceptable:
The AV7706 works flawlessly with other brands. The moment the 98QM8K enters the chain, CEC falls apart. That points squarely at TCL firmware. Firmware updates don’t fix it — they just reshuffle which feature breaks next.
Bottom line:
The picture is great. The size is incredible.
But if you use a real AV processor and expect your system to behave like a single system, this TV will drive you insane.
Avoid this pairing unless you enjoy manually powering devices and losing basic control every day.
TCL needs to fix their HDMI-CEC stack. Until then, this TV is a compatibility liability.

phenomenal picture, easy to set up and use- downside-you have to play around with the sound setting to fine tune , no user manual

So far everything is great. Blindingly bright when you push it but still plenty good at lower brightness levels. It does have the hum above 60% brightness, which I believe from reading forums is the fan. No clicking or buzzing noises. Could it be almost too big at 98"? Perhaps but still awesome. Speakers are adequate, wouldn't hang your hat on the B&O stuff too much and a soundbar is still the better way. Excited for the Z100 Dolby FlexConnect stuff coming soon.

Massive Immersive Display Excellent Black Levels

I wanted to upgrade my older 75” display to a more immersive and larger display for my basement movie area. The QM8K with the latest v313 firmware in Filmmaker mode delivers. HDR pops, this thing is really bright, I may even need to crank it down a notch it’s so bright. When Gaming it automatically switches over to game mode, very smooth. No issues. Overall I’m satisfied, would recommend. Great value.

I love this tv. The size is perfect for the massive wall in my living room, It is replacing a 65" LG OLED that I love even more. This TCL produces a great picture and better than average sound, but it cannot beat an OLED with its "inky" black levels and legendary contrast. To quantify, I would say that this TCL will get you 85 to 90% of what an OLED is capable of, but I can't afford a $25,000 LG OLED. If you are going for size, this is the one to get.

I watch mostly SD (1080 or 720) sources and was worried that a 98 inch tv would look terrible. Not at all. It looks stunning (even with DVDs). I am using it with an easel style stand that works very well. My only issues are nitpicks. First, it is VERY reflective. When it is showing black during the day, it is like a mirror (with noticeable rainbow from direct sources). At night and in most scenes, this is not an issue. It takes a few second to find my tivo. It also has to find wi-fi each time it turns on (less than 10 seconds).
My delivery was an issue. The company called the night before and told me they thought my stand would not work (they did not even know what stand I was using) and they did not think it would fit in my house (they had no idea what my house was like). When they arrived, he said it would not fit. I had a board that was the length and width of the TV and showed him it would fit with some (not much) room to spare. He said that none of these TVs fit and that he had failed to deliver any of the 8 sets he had tried to deliver before he got to me. He finally said that he would only deliver if I took full responsibility (which I did). At 3 points he claimed he could not get it in the door and each time I had to show him that all he needed to do was make a slight adjustment. The delivery team did not want to do the job. Be prepared to push them. Once inside they refused to do the log in to the streaming services (as was supposed to be included) since it would take too much time. No big deal since I could do it.
To sum up: TV 5 stars, delivery 1.5.

I have this in an upstairs living area so the extra brightness is wonderful. 60% brightness is more than enough for even midday viewing. The picture quality and sharpness have been impressive. I can't comment on the sound quality as I've only used my surround system with it.

Outrageously incredible. I'm not sure where to start. Not only does this TV produce amazing picture quality, it's edge to edge basically zero bezel turns the TV into a beautiful room centerpiece. I've had it for a month. Zero issues, zero buzz (IYKYK), and jaw-dropping brightness and color. I primarily watch sports (streaming via Google TV) on it and am blown away each time.

This TV will meet and exceed your expectations! I am coming from a Sony TV and I was hesitant on trying this brand. I am very impressed with the picture quality and brightness and I am hoping this will last more than 8 years since my Sony lasted that long.

It has a beautiful picture but we put a sound bar on it so we don't know about the sound. The 9k doesn't look that much better, just a little brighter. Both look amazing.

I'm sure that there are other panels and OLEDs that exceed this TV slightly in a few areas but if you need a very large screen and this is as good as it gets unless you want to spend 4x the price. Coming from a mid line Samsung 82 inch the difference here is mind blowing. Speakers are whatever but if you're buying a screen this size you already have a sound system or else you should.

I have the 98KM8K. Installed by Geek Squad on Sep 18. Squad set-up and checkout were excellent. Some six hours into use, the set developed a hum and modulating pulse string (morse code like). This "Buzz" defect has been noted on several review websites (Andrew Robinson, Rtngs.Com) and on AVSForum and Reddit. Based on another user's reporting and documentation (see AVSForum), TCL has been attempting an onsite field fix with some success.
I have been in contact with TCL support and have a ticketed case number where I have performed the various trouble shooting steps, supplied requested audio files and screen shots and am awaiting feedback and next steps.
However, my Best Buy return window is down to a week. My concern is that since there is likely a defective lot locally warehoused, an immediate replacement will likely have the same fault just as reported by another reviewer here. As this site is monitored by TCL Support I'd like them to take the following actions: (1) Formally note that there is a defect and provide a technical bulletin and Service Department POC so the customer can provide a compelling reason for vendor return and replacement/refund as desired and, (2) Provide a warranty roadmap so current users following TCL service request procedures have a means to understand when a warranty fix might be expected.
