The Apartment is a classic and every time I watch it, I get more out of it. This was in the bargain bin at Best Buy for around $5, so I picked it up to replace my old DVD copy. The Blu-Ray is a definite step up in both image and sound. It has an excellent audio commentary and two special features.
There is also an Arrow "Limited Edition" that came out this year, but it costs more. For my money, this Blu-Ray for $5 was the way to go.

A bachelor has an apartment, which is used by 4 other executives for their affairs. The plan is to get ahead in business by lending out his flat. The plan works well, until the big boss, Fred Macmurray, finds out about the 4 executives and confronts Jack Lemmon. Both men are interested in one of the buildings elevator operators, Shirley Maclaine. It's a great movie.

A great movie from Director Billy Wilder! Good blend of drama and comedy, with Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine and Fred MacMurray all delivering on the spot performances. Highly recommended for classic movie fans----only technicolor instead of B&W would have improved this film!

I put off seeing this movie because the subject matter is kind of gross, but I should have trusted Billy Wilder. He took this film to dark places and didn’t let CC Baxter off the hook. Lemon and MacLaine are great as Baxter and Kubelik.
I highly recommend this film.

Classic Comedy

One of the best written comedies of the golden age of Hollywood. It is biting, satirical and emotionally deft where it counts as well as where it is unexpected when it reveals the tragic underpinnings of modern corporate living from all facets. 4 star review is only because like all MGM discs from a period, it annoyingly has no main menu and just cycles the movie, features only accessible through the pop up menu which inhibits the experience.

If you have never seen this movie, go online and buy it right away.
McMurray is the boss having an affair with McLaine, and uses
employee Lemmon's apartment as their meeting place. By turns
funny and dramatic, with a happy ending, one of Billy Wilder's
BEST.

Fred MacMurray plays a disreputable boss in this tale of a rising young businessman (Jack Lemmon) who lets the boss and other key execs use his apartment to rendezvous with women. The boss' latest conquest is also the lady Lemmon has fallen for. When the boss refuses to leave his wife for her, she tries to commit suicide in the apartment and things begin to happen.

This is a romantic comedy that understands what it’s trying to say! Wonderfully acted and expertly written to explore themes of sexism, classism, and the ever-tried & true ‘love’, The Apartment is a classic in every way!

The Apartment is classic Billy Wilder only enhanced by the performances of Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, and Fred MacMurray. Yes, it is dated by today's standards, but it is a classic of its time and winner of Best Picture. Picture and sound quality a far better than the previous DVD. Unless you want to buy a hefty price for the Olive Films release, this is the next best thing.

This has some high highs and low lows. The comedy helps temper just how sad all this can get. Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine give phenomenal performances.
