Historical Fiction. Death is the narrator of the story of a girl who is taken from her mother by the German police to live with a foster German family. Set in the World War II era, she finds a book as her brother is buried. She carries this with her to her new family. Humiliated at school because she cannot read causes her to beat the bully responsible. Later at home when her foster father realizes she cannot read, he sets up a classroom in the basement where she learns her letters. The story is heartwarming as they live in the dangers of World War II Germany.

This movie was exceptional. It tells a story about a lost little girl who moves in with strangers! It shows the bond between foster parents and a child. It took place during the German war in which people destroyed books. Little girl was determined to save some books and read. She developed a bond between a Jewish man and her reading. She was always trying to help others and learn new things. She gave people hope in a time of need. I would recommend this movie to everyone because it is heartwarming and sad. Shows how one girl's strength lives on!

I was expecting a story about an orphan who finds her adoptive parents & while there'd be struggles it would be a "feel-good" movie. When the movie begins with Death as the narrator I knew that I was in for something different. Sophie Nelisse is enchanting. Watching her get older on screen is subtle & beautiful but never unnatural. There is no doubt in my mind that she will be around again very soon. Talent like her's should not be wasted. In addition, you can't help fall in love with the other characters in this movie (Georfrey Rush, Emily Watson, Nico Liersch, & Ben Schnetzer). You may be left with mixed feeling but I am sure that you will be glad that you watched it.

Enjoyed my new DVD that I received via mail in ordering online via Best Buy. The film quality is excellent. I've always enjoied watching DVD's regularly but more especially now during the stay home order and with too much covid news 24/7. Watching films via DVD has helped relieve a lot of anxiety by turning off the tv and turning on a film. I recommend this film. A beautiful watch and heart felt story.

I thought this movie was very well done and enlightening. A lot of the plot paralleled much of what my Mother experienced growing up in Natzi Germany. The movie showed Natzi indoctrination in an elementary school, Jews being taken from their home, enduring aerial bombing, food shortages and wondering when/if her Father would return from the military. I'm glad this movie showed the human side of Germans during WWII; because not all Germans were master race Natzis blindly following the fuhrer.

...the movie doesn't suck. Books are almost always better than the movie adaptation, but we all know that. In this case there are some details left out that make the book more complete, but the movie does an admirable job of portraying (most) of the story. Acting? Better than average. If you have never read the book, you'll probably like the movie just fine. if you have read the book, you'll know what's missing, but it depends on your review scale on how much it matters. I would recommend watching the movie first and then reading the book. Instead of being disappointed, you'll look at it like a bonus.

Purchased in store and was very satisfied with my purchase. When i bought this movie I wasn't too sure what it was about, the synopsis on the cover sounded interesting and the price was decent so i purchased it. Turned out to be a very good movie with morals. Would recommend for an audience over the age of 10.

OK here is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Yes I don't don't see all of the them, but of the ones I have seen this one is in the top 5%. Can cannot tell you anything about it without somehow giving way something that will spoil it for you, so I can only tell you that both my wife and i felt it was a good movie to watch. But while kids star in the movie I cannot recommend it for kids under 13 and only after the parents have watched it first.

This DVD is not only of high quality, as far as DVDs are concerned, but the film itself truly does justice to the best-seller. The acting is superb and the story line is remarkable. I intend using it in my Death and Dying course as supplemental viewing for my undergraduate students. As a testament to the human spirit, not to mention the ineluctable and constant presence of death itself, The Book Thief is worth watching, absorbing and remembering for a long time to come.

This Movie was Great. The hollow family was so in to it accidentally bought it while shopping. My kids play it over on the big Screen to feel as if they were realy there. This Movie has a lot of Advantages and funny moments and is Great for older Children and adults. The girl in the movie is an awesome hit as the star of the show. Witch like things that always has you guessing what's going to happen next.

I definitely Will recommend this movie to friends and family. It is a good family movie for every age to watch. It's a family time, family gathering or get together kind of movie with popcorn n chocolate candy. So relax and enjoy this movie on a Sunday afternoon or evening after a church service when football season was over and you don't have your favorite team to cheer for, pop this movie in and you will enjoy it thoroughly. Such a good show!! I hope they make more of these kind of valuable shows in the future. Don't feed our generation with all kind of nonsense like some shows in the market.

Great price for the DVD for one of my favorite movies of all time. Arrived quickly, well-packaged, and product was as expected. This item was available on best buy when I could not find it currently available on other websites such as amazon so i was really relieved to find it here and not have to wait or go with the more expensive blue ray! This movie is definitely a tear jerker and is an interesting and very human perspective of the culture of World War II.

Purchased this movie for my girlfriend - she read the book. It was better than it expected, most of the time I'm pretty good with predicting what will happen in movies, but there were some good surprises. It was definitely a "PG" type of movie. One of the only negatives is I would expect them to focus more on how brutal Hitler's group was (sorry BestBuy is preventing me from saying the group's name!). According to my girlfriend, there is a lot missing from the book, but she still really enjoyed the movie. It is also a long movie (close to 2.5 hours), so there is not much more room to add.

Excellent movie- the acting and story line are both very well done. I was afraid (like many movies about WWII) it might be very difficult to watch because of the inhumane treatment of Jewish citizens and those who were friendly to them. Though this movie was able to portray the fear the prejudice caused, they were able to do it without the extreme and graphic scenes- which unfortunately are very accurate but very difficult to watch.

This movie begins with a narrative by the angel of death. Not a supernatural thriller by any means rather a character study of different folks who endure the horror of living in Germany during WWII. It shows simultaneously the weakness and strength exhibited by people forced to survive and help others do the same. I found it a heartwarming and tearful experience. There is also some very good acting. Highly recommended.

I've been too busy to watch the movie, so I quickly ran a few minutes for this review. You can immediately see that this is going to be a really enjoyable, thoughtful movie. The reviews I read were right. The disk was recognized quickly in my computer's B-R/Dvd player/burner, and Cyberlink carried the job well from there. This hasn't been true for all of my DVD, nor B-R purchases, not by a long shot.

I knew this was based off of a book, but I hadn't read it by the time I saw it. The movie was so good, I decided to read the book. This film sticks to the book about as well as one can. The unique narration is one of the most beautiful, yet eerie, uses I've heard. The father/daughter relationship is wonderful and the acting is great! The hard-hearted mother is played exceptionally well as you can begin to see her love pour out as the movie progresses. An overall joy to watch with great emotion throughout.

This is a great movie. A historical drama. It takes place in Germany during WWII. A story that follows a young girl’s life & perspective. There is war, drama, love, suspense, relationships, etc…

I was very interested in this movie when I saw the first commercial previews for it. I decided to read the book first, which turned out to be a great idea. Due to the time constraint of the film, many parts were left out. Like the explanation of why Hans feels the need to help the Jewish Boy Max. (Max's father (a Jew) and Hans fought in WWI together, and Max's father saved Hans' life.

Good Dinos is a great family movie. My two year old granddaughter thought it was just wonderful. She has been running around the house pretending she is a dinosaur. Mockingjay 2 completed our collection and we are watching all 4 of them in a row. May have to watch the Mockingjay 1 and 2 tomorrow getting kind of tired don't want to fall asleep during the movie.
