This movie is a true story. Saw this movie on cable and immediately said, this is what a great story is all about. No special effects but, this true story is one of the Great ones which takes place in Germany during World War 2. This is a must see movie.

Wasn't thinking I would like this but gave it a shot. Glad I did because the movie wasn't disappointing in the least. Based on WWII times under German control and the actions of good hearted individuals trying to help one another. Heart warming ending despite the turmoil of war.

I don't know how this film snuck under the radar, but seeing it in the Best Buy bargain bin was the first I had heard of it. Do yourself a favor and WATCH THIS MOVIE! A difficult subject matter, but a beautifully acted and well told story. I will definitely watch it again!

I was actually quite surprised how this story was told during the 3rd Regime times in Germany. Very interesting story, especially when you find out who was narrating the story the whole time. The picture and audio quality was superb.

This is a story so rich in characters that I know I will remember it for the rest of my life. The plot is so straight forward but it is intertwined with many subplots which results in loving each character.

This movie is almost as good as the book - and that's high praise! Of course, the movie misses some of the internal dialogue and nuances of the book but this movie was well done. Beware, though, it will break your heart! Keep the tissues handy.

Nice story line, really liked the narrative style for this movie. Geoffrey Rush was really a good choice for the role of the father. The main character Lisele was portrayed excellent job for such a young actress. Must see nice family film in my opinion.

After reading the book, I was hesitant to watch the movie, as the book was very intense. I am so glad that I gave the movie a chance. This is such a beautiful movie. The script was well done and the acting was wonderful. It's a tearjerker, but so worth it.

The experiences of a young girl in WWII Germany. This is not a "War Movie" it is a thoughtful view about the lives of ordinary people during wartime and how a young girl's life is shaped by her adopted family harboring a young Jewish man from the authorities.

In a vein similar to Diary of Anne Frank, but with a surprising and chilling narrator. The time period is interesting and deals with an unusual perspective of the story. The fear and degradation portrayed here is a bit unnerving but certainly spot on.

A girl is adopted by a German husband and wife and how they bind during the turbulent times in Germany from WWI. The main character and other actors are supurb to me. Well worth seeing and makes you want to read the book. Wish I had gone to see it when it was at the theatres.

Based on what was happening during the Second World War. But not true story. Sad, suspense and fear due to Germans craziness. A pretty put together story of an intelectual obsessed book thief.

Few movies are as good as the book, and this one is no exception. It's a really good movie if you have never read the book. Read the book first and you'll not be thrilled. Read the book after, and you'll wonder why some things were changed. But if you just watch the movie, you'll enjoy it and never know what you're missing.

Great movie for the family, children 10+ able to understand. Though it is fictional it certainly speaks to actual historical events and therefore, creates an excellent conversation afterward and provokes thoughts on humanity and human rights.

My daughter saw the movie in theatres. Loved it. She saw this on sale at Best Buy, and wanted it for her movie collection. I think she has now watched it about 3 times, with friends too. For her, she likes it in her collection.

This is one of those must see movies. It is good for all ages and helps to explain how bad life was during World War II as told thru a child's eyes. It is sad in places so beware but it also has a good ending. A story very well told.

This is an excellent movie of WWII life in Germany from the view of a girl living with a foster family. Leisle finds solace and hope in books and shares these with others. Very moving story that will be enjoyed and appreciated by all.

This movie really showed what the German people went through, when Hitler was in control, it was no walk in the park. Everyone struggled, and it looked like the end of the world. But this girl was amazing learned to read and I fell in love with her.

We had seen the movie in theater and bought the DVD for our granddaughters. We were a little apprehensive that it might be too emotional for them but they liked it so much they then read the book.
